What the heck was that??

Did anyone else hear something that sounded like an explosion???
In the slope, but it sounds like it was coming from the direction of Flatbush ave.

    Subject: manhole covers

    A couple of manhole covers blew up on 5th Ave at President and Carroll. As of a few minutes ago blue flames were popping up out of one of them and lots of smoke from both. It didn't seem like anyone got hurt. Didn't seem to be any damage to property either. The cover was sitting about three feet away from the manhole at Carroll.

    Went out and saw it all. All is well it looks like no one or building was damaged. Yes, a manhole cover exploded. In front of Joe's shoe repair. Sent my pics to gothamist, let see...

    I walked passed the corner of 5th and President on my way to the subway around 7:15am and there was barely a trace of anything out of the ordinary. Was I just in my morning fog, or was it cleaned up by then?

    There was a little bit of yellow tape with "fire do not cross" that I was wondering about, but that's all I saw this morning. Slept right through everything else...

    This happened in front of my old apartment on 5th Street & 6th Ave - the manhole cover blew, and the car parked on top of it caught on fire. Pretty horrific.

    God, I think it was 5 years ago? Maybe? In the spring/summer. It happened at like 3 in the morning, so my memory is a bit whacked.
