Hookah Bar on 7th Ave

Uh... looks like a POS.
I was strangely uneasy about the idea of a smoke shop (given that I wish one and all happy toking), but when I saw it was a Hookah Bar too, I figured, hey, this could turn out OK.
Looks like the people who run it spent $250 at Ikea to outfit the place, and then opened their doors. Zero ambiance, zero effort, just a room with some tables and poorly spelled fingerpaint on the windows.
Kind of a shame - the people who run it look like nice enough folks, but as it stands it's about as appealing as an empty storefront. -
I agree with SouthSlopeSuit. The ambiance is bizarre. At first I thought it was a take-out sushi joint. The only people in there when I walked by were two young kids doing homework...
-
what old storefront does this inhabit? Is it on the little strip where greenjeans (I think thats the name) used to be or is it near slope suds? Got a name?
-
It's right between Henry's and Slope Suds I believe.
-
It's the large place that used to be a internet cafe of some sort back in the day, and more recently the ladies' boutique 'Lily'.
-
well, if nobody's going, i guess i'm going to take a bunch of friends there! they all love hookah, and it's hard to find a place that isn't trendy. guess this is the alternative!!
-
I love shisha...in my apartment. For $2

Well, to update, I finally did stop in and I have a few things to say... First of all, the hookah was surprisingly pleasant. My friend and I got the apple, although there are a ton of flavor choices. There is only one hose, but everyone gets their own individually wrapped mouthpiece. I really enjoyed it, but as this was my first hookah bar experience, I have no idea if that experience was unique to this place (whose name I still don't know...)
That being said, what you've all said about the ambiance is 100% right - it's terrible. Just a wide open space with wooden tables and chairs and a few red couches lining the walls, but that's where the proprietor was sitting, talking on the phone, so it would've been awkward to just cozy up next to her - needless to say, we got a table.
Conversation proved to be a problem because there is no background noise at all - no music playing, and certainly no other customers talking, so we could hear the owner's (i'm guessing she was the owner) phone conversation and she could hear our chit chat...
As the fingered painted windows will tell you, in addition to offering hookahs, they also have coffee, tea, hot chocolate and maybe a few other things - we both got coffees. It was a good ten or fifteen minutes from the time we actually ordered our hookah and coffees til the time they arrived - we were the only people in there, I have no idea what could've possibly taken so long. The coffees, when they eventually did come, arrived in paper cups. We were offered cream, which we both accepted, and were instead delivered a bottle of coffeemate non-dairy creamer. There is no milk or dairy of any kind at all. I don't know if this is due to the owner's religious beliefs or the health code rules that come with serving milk, but it was disappointing.
Final verdict: If you want to enjoy a hookah, I'm guessing there are places that are warmer (both literally and figuratively - the owner was wearing her coat the entire time, to give some idea) and more inviting than this place. The coffee was horrible, the ambiance was horrible, the service was horrible and the hookah was delightful.
I doubt I'll be back. I think from now on I'll just stay in my apartment, buy rolling tobacco and smoke it through an apple, like I used to do with weed in college. -
I can think of few businesses that are more insidious than a hookah bar.
Let the fun begin... -
The recent addition of the lopsided "Grand Opening" sign really spiffs up the place nicely. Classy joint.

Try My Bianky on Coney Island Ave (across from Sahara).

Great review...is this place like a front for money laundering because it sure as hell isn't trying to make it as a legitimate business.

That is exactly what I thought when I walked past.
It looks like the windows have been vandalized by graffiti rather than proper advertisements.
Probably the most uninviting storefront i have ever seen. -

You never saw Manhattans (before it closed). -
Do we really need this?

Do we really need a hookah bar?

Of course not.
What we really need is one of those make-your-own-salad places with lots of yummy choices. That and an enormous crack in the Earth's crust running the length of Seventh Ave from Flatbush to Greenwood Cemetery, with plumes of searing flame jetting out constantly, and heaps of hot ash covering all the double-parked cars.
Also, a dedicated bike lane. -

You keep bringing this up... I would love to see you invest your own money in this total loser of an idea. People are not willing to pay enough for salad alone to cover Park Slope rents. Simple fact.Danny Hellman wrote: That and an enormous crack in the Earth's crust running the length of Seventh Ave from Flatbush to Greenwood Cemetery, with plumes of searing flame jetting out constantly, and heaps of hot ash covering all the double-parked cars.
Without the hyperbole, I can certainly get behind the idea of a dedicated bike lane.

No, I'm the one who's investing my personal fortune in an all-night Tofu hut, which I think will do quite well in this area, in spite of your personal, er---tastes. Right now, we're looking into a space at the intersection of Fifth Ave and Pacific St, which is being offered at a very attractive rate.

Belzjm is the one who chimes in about his impossible salad bar dream every six weeks like clockwork.
It's a PARODY post, get it? Why do I even bother? -

Not really, since I don't see where belzjm posted that in this thread. Parody doesn't work too well as a non-sequitur.
I can't wait to try your tofu hut. Make sure to post when it opens. -
tofu is really light.
it'll be really hard to make money on a per pound basis. -

Seconded -
Tofu hookah anyone?

I walk by this place every day, at least twice. It is bizzar! I've never seen any customers there, but the people who seem to work there "look" happy. I give it another month or two.
It's too bad, it must take a lot of balls to open a new shop. Seems like they should have done a little research though in choosing a neighborhood. I mean, even the bodegas along 7th offer organic food, that, along with the abundance of strollers, over priced clothing stores (hey, the hooka bar WAS an over priced clothing store!) and kids shops should maybe send a message that a hooka bar miiight not be a big hit.
I'd say it's better than another nail salon or bank or even another bubble tea place, but I'm really not sure it is. -
I bet it would have done better on Vanderbilt.
-
It's just gotten more interesting tonight. While walking by I noticed a huge projection tv. I'll feel a bit bad if this does indeed fail, everytime I walk by there are 2 little kids inside, I'm assuming the owners two little girls?
-
Funny since the writing on the window says that no one under 18 is allowed. Every time I go by I see kids who HAVE to be under 18 hanging out. They don't look like customers.

i walked by saturday night and they were projecting a powerpoint presentation..
also i walked by friday night and it was dark and LOUD LOUD music. a few people dancing.... maybe a family party, i dont know.
this place is awesome on many levels. -
I think that, if they fail, it will be in the presentation. That place looks seriously weird and creepy.
