Brooklynian Ice Skating + Foist-a-thon: Sunday Jan 3rd 2010! — Brooklynian

Brooklynian Ice Skating + Foist-a-thon: Sunday Jan 3rd 2010!

As an aspiring Dictator, I hereby declare that on Sunday afternoon (January 3rd) at 2 PM the following event will occur:

Brooklynian Ice Skating and Foist-a-thon 2010!

This event will consist of the following:

A. Ice Skating at the Prospect Park Rink by completely unskilled Brooklynians (In addition to yours truly, some of the unskilled people will even include cousins of yours truly). I believe it will cost a grand total of $11.50 to get in, rent skates, fall in front of people, and spend the rest of the day wearing wet jeans. Good Times!

B. A Foist-a-thon. In this event, people will bring the worst gift they have received, preferably wrapped in an ultra-classy, white plastic Key Food bag. This gift will then be foisted on an unsuspecting Brooklynian who has brought a similar "gift".

Gifts from office parties are encouraged! Gifts from prior holiday seasons and/or birthdays are encouraged! Gifts that you purchase from a Dollar Store on the way to the Ice Rink (because you either have no friends or are lucky enough to have friends who give you good gifts that you don't want to give away) are encouraged.

As the self-appointed Dictator and Organizer, I will supply a large contractor-Hefty bag for people to deposit their gifts and "draw" new gifts. The brilliance of this plan is that gifts left in the bag will conveniently be ready for disposal in the nearest dumpster.

Newbies, lurkers, and -yes- even regular posters are welcome!

Caution:
People who hate children are advised that children are known to frequent ice skating rinks; Prospect Park's rink is no exception. Some children even get around in strollers.

People who hate dogs are advised that dogs frequent Prospect Park, and are likely to be seen en route.

People who don't leave their apartment, and simply post all day, are advised that Prospect Park is, indeed, outside their apartment.

People who cannot cope with alternate side parking rules are advised that the skating rink may have rules they find similarly complex.

People are advised that it is often cold in early January, and whining about the fact that it is cold, will be considered by many attendees to be "lame".

People who believe that the mere suggestion of this event is somehow inherently discriminatory against their race, gender, class, veteran status, religion, sexual orientation, etc. are encouraged to a file complaint with the NYC Division of Human Rights. Please make sure to file said complaint while the rest of us (a reasonably diverse group of NYers) are actually attending and enjoying the event.

People who have diets, preferences or religious views that prohibit them from enjoying the inorganic, preservative-fortified items (such as pretzels, hot chocolate, and hot dogs) that are proudly featured by the highly regarded Propect Park Ice Rink Snack Bar are hereby encouraged to, both pack their own snacks AND not bother those who have taken the time to develop the refined palette required to appreciate such fine American delicacies.

  • Considering who will most likely hijack this thread for a discussion of their personal problems I'm surprised you didn't put the third caution first :-'

    :D:D:D
I nominate your cautions as site directives, to be added to The Rules.
  • people who are doing the foist-athon, please post. I don't want to be the only one dragging along a gift.

Pitu, I think rule #1 should be added to the top of the PS board

Whynot, are the rink hot dogs any good? dirty water dogs for a buck or do they try and sell them at tourist prices

(I can pack some treats for people otherwise, do a little picnic)

I have no idea, but predict I will purchase and consume two of them regardless.

Please note, I have now decreed the date and time for this event: Sunday at 2pm.
  • I'm out. I'll be sound asleep between night shifts.
  • I do believe I shall be in attendance +1
  • I might join in the skating.... I hurt my back some years ago and I'm wary of slippy slidy things now as I'm scared of hurting my back again.... Perhaps I'll come along and decide on the day.

    Should be fun though!
  • I can confirm that Mrs. Whynot, Cousin #1, Cousin #2, and myself will all be in attendance.

Nomad, Papi chulo can't skate so he might be on the sidelines having a hotdog with you. (me too -maybe)
  • If anyone is a size 11ish men's, you can probably borrow my hockey skates and save a few bucks.
  • I'm in! And I'll be bringing ace bandages, but not to give away/foist. (Though used ace bandages would be a pretty good item for foistery).
  • For those people who like agendas:

    a. As per above link, the skating rink opens at 2:00. People should begin arriving at 2:00 and then skating.

    b. By 3:30 (at the latest), I predict we will be tired of skating.
Between 3:30 and 4:00, the Foistathon will occur. Mrs Whynot and I will be among those participating, not sure about the cousins. Unclaimed Foistathon items will be respectfully placed in the rink's trashcan.

    c. Approximately 20 minutes of walking will follow the Foistathon. (4:00 - 4:20)

    d. Precisely 1 hour and 40 minutes of eating of chili and drinking hot chocolate will then occur ....ending exactly at 6:00.
  • I intend to shock and amaze everyone with my incredible ice skating skills. I haven't been skating in 10 years, but I'm sure my abilities have improved exponentially over that time period.

Apparently Mougar has not been skating since he was 4.

...ahem, newbies and lurkers, are any of you joining us?
I don't think any of the folks that are attending bite, but I can't say I know them well enough to swear to that.
  • If it's not cold enough for ice, is there ice anyway? (i.e. do they keep the rink frozen regardless of the unseasonably warm weather)
  • It's frozen with machines, not by nature. No risk of it being closed, or uumm, falling thru the ice
  • Forecast says it's 20 degrees (real feel of 4 degrees) and windy out there. Bundle up peoples!

Where, (oh great dictator! :D ) do you think the Foistathon will occur??! I'm not gonna skate, but will come on down for the other activities, even though I have nothing to foist!
  • The Foistathon will occur at the rink.

...I have my thermals on, my wool socks on, and am now leaving the apt.

P.S. I met up with the cousins in mhtn this AM, and they have wimped out.

    skating: 2:30 - 3:15
    foisting: 3:15 - 3:30
    walking: 3:30 - 3:50
    chili and hot chocolate-ing: 3:50 - 6.
  • Have spent so much time wasting time at home I'll now only partake in the chili & hot choc!
  • The fest is complete!
Despite quite chilly temperatures, Mougar, Carmen, "the mexican", Mrs Whynot and myself ice skated AND ate chili.

Mama, Papi and Nomad simply ate chili.

(a much bigger crowd than my prior attempt at hosting an event, the Summer 2009 Fishing Trip!)

    ...please unsticky and unglobal.

P.S. FYI, Mougar was the best skater; he could actually skate backwards.
  • Great chili and great company. We should do this again, this time I'll try not to miss the skating part. :D
  • Good times were had by all and I didnt even bust my ass!
