Subject: Daddy's Day Care?

Daddy's Day Care is located at 256 6th Avenue in Park Slope. Have any parents visited this Day Care. What are your thoughts on the Day Care? I am an early childhood educator and after taking a tour, I have my thoughts.

Comments

  • so are you going to tell us your thoughts?
  • Yes, what are your thoughts?
  • Is this where you drop off the dads for a few hours when you don't want to deal with them?
  • Farrell's has a Daddy's Day Care Center, which is right across from the Double Windsor Child Care Center..

Both have to be picked up by 5pm.
  • @Carmen & LongTimeSloper-
Here is the experience I had- I made an appointment for a tour yesterday. My mother found "Daddy Day Care" advertising their facility on Craigslist. I wrote "Daddy Day Care" an e-mail asking a few questions. I asked if they were NAEYC accredited. (They are not) I asked if they would help "potty" train. (Yes they do) As well other questions. I was happy my questions were answered because other day cares weren't as forthcoming with personal e-mails. (Beth Elohim Early Childhood Education Center replied with personal e-mails) I visited "Daddy's Day Care" yesterday. "Daddy's Day Care" is located in a basement apartment of a brownstone apartment building. When I rang the bell, I was greeted by a muscular man in a sweat suit and socks. The entire floor thru is dedicated to the day care. The walls were painted from top to bottom with rainbows, suns, puzzle pieces, etc. There were about 500 toys in the room. Lots of them still in the packaging. It looked like a toy store. (Lulu's or Little Things) Victor is the "Daddy" Victor is the manager of the PC Richard on Kings HIghway and says he wants to eventually do "Daddy's Day Care" full time. He said he has educational background and no background in education. His assistant was taking care of a 6 1/2 month old. I asked her is she smoked cigarettes because she smelled of smoke. She looked at Victor and them answered "no". There was only one 3-year-old boy in the day care. Victor said that the other children are "pending" because of immunizations. I asked Victor if the people he hires are certified and he said, "They aren't supposed to be." Victor said he is hiring yoga teachers/music teachers etc. Victor charges $14/per hour if your child attends part time and $10/hour for full time.
  • When it comes to child daycare, I'm always interested in the thoughts of NYC DOH.

...but wasn't able to find anything about Daddy's Daycare on 6th Ave.

    https://a816-healthpsi.nyc.gov/ChildCare/SearchAction2.do?pager.offset=160

perhaps they are doing business under a different name?
perhaps you could call them and get their ID #, and then see what's online...

If you look at a random lic'd daycare on the DOH site, you can find last inspection results, etc. ...pretty good info.
  • They are charging $14 an hour, I am out of touch here, but, can't you get a nanny for $14 an hour? I thought daycare was supposed to be cheaper than a nanny. Though, must admit, haven't looked into either in a billion years
  • Can I drop my dog off? He's got his shots and $14 an hour there is cheaper than an hour with a walker :) He'll even do some work--he's excellent at herding children.
  • @LongTimeSloper: No, I didn't like "Daddy's Day Care" and YES, I can get a nanny for that price. @Whynot_31- They opened a few weeks ago. I will call them and get their #ID number-Thx
  • Brownstoner has a discussion on Daddy Day Care, including a response from the owner:

  • I did read that Brownstoner link that got derailed with a "should 12 year olds be in strollers" discussion. I think Kalechipper was pretty clear and direct about concerns after actually visiting this place.

The one thought that I had is that it was probably not a very good decision to put up that homemade banner to announce their opening. Perhaps a more discreet, professional sign is being made.
  • Wow, I think the people discussing "Daddy Day Care" on Brownstoner should edit. I am not in the business of slamming "Daddy Day Care". I want to give my observations and let people make their own judgements.
  • Kalechipper... I appreciated your expanded and thoughtful posting based on "observation" and backed up by knowing what a good child care situation should be.

    ditto.

The DOH only provides inspection information (as everyone knows, one can pass a DOH inspection -think restaurants- and provide lousy food and service. I'm sure the same is true for child care).
  • I just want to mention that there are good day care options. My just 4 year old has been going to Rory's Room (don't have exact address but Ft Hamilton Pkway) for 2 years. I have observed, hung out and picked him up. I am impressed in all ways.

All those little hints about evaluating a place that Kalechipper was talking about are in place.

Not a plastic toy with batteries to be seen..lol!
  • That's Great Veets! You should write all your observations down on a blog to showcase how happy you are. I blog about the classes/places I take my daughter to. I don't blog as often as I would like to but it's a great way to pass the word along about places/events you believe in.

    HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
  • Kalechipper, you should know that Daddy Day care is a member here and has probably seen your post and where you work (as you mostly post about your store). Interesting that your signature line with your address is now changed.

Edit: not you, meant "your" post
  • Tell me Mamacita, why is that interesting?

that is a great idea and I will think about pursuing it. I have a kind of unique perspective on child rearing in PS since I raised my in their mid 30 year old kids right here and I have one son in PS with kids (one I hope will have them here) and have been the "elderly substitute stroller mom) in PS for the last 9 years.

If I think about it I have developed expertise on what activities to do with kids in PS now.

One recommendation. Roly Poly Rock N Roll Class at YMCA on 9th street.. These guys are beyond great!
  • Has anyone heard anything about them recently/ know anyone who sends their kids there?
  • Subject: Daddy's Day Care is great!

I wanted to let everyone know how great Daddy's Day Care has been for my toddler. My son is 2 3/4 and loves going to this daycare! I have no problems dropping him off in the morning- he gets so excited to go see Vadim. I really like that a man is involved and so does my son. When I pick him up he is so happy and has obviously been enjoying himself. It is a very loving and caring environment. The outdoor space is a big plus!

I hope this helps more people look into this great new daycare. (And disregard the ridiculous blogging before this.)
