  • in a chamber sat the dark lord and his son, baldc

at a table long with all manner of meat, root, and bread

"giving lord, feed us... our children go hungry."

pleaded the folk from his narrow window

"come here, and feed you all i will" he said

they stood in queue, one by one, two by two

then he cut out their tongues and their children's tongues

and from his mouth he placed firey words into theirs

then he branded their eyes and their children's eyes

he admired his work and commanded

"cry out now, and serve with my minions."

"take, grab, take, grab, take, grab, seize..."

at the decorated gate they all gathered

armored men from the garden realm

distant men from an island long

blind men now full of fire
  • behind glorious gates lay tracks of land

though water was made poison and streets ruined

the land was not barren as was told

    early prospectors still held strong

verdant signs there were of living, working, playing

in the land now called fallow

"take the land as yours and build me a fortress to keep safe my white beast."

    dark lord commanded

"and those who oppose, my lord?" asked an armored soldier

as he pointed to a cooking fire in a tall building

"i care not" he quipped "break the ground and then break them all."

a weighty beefeater descended onto the beast

flapping its wings and hissing a song of praise

"hazzah hazzah... the white beast of dark king

trallah trallah... what fortune it shall bring"

it was mharti, familiar of dark lord

festooned in finery yet frail the beast had

translucent skin that barely hid slate blue veins

and large doughy ears like uncooked hardtack

its long snout hung listless between tusks a-broken

as it hobbled in its enclosure neath the weight

    of gold, gems, and mharti
  • a legend told of the coming of an immortal, noble beast

in 10th year of the new age

it had skin like alabaster and eyes like emeralds and a voice like thunder

white beast would reward eternal wealth to all who would worship it

wealth to their children, and their children's children

    and their children's children's children

but dark lord was devious and played many tricks

noble folk were called vulgar, the righteous were painted as demons

and in a wooden enclosure a sickly common animal

in fine robes blinked its pink watery eyes

was this creature at all a magical beast?

lawmakers and politicians needed to believe it

religious men and bankers needed to believe it

news makers and desperate folk needed to believe it

I think with a decent camera and an violin or harpist, you could do a reading as the tractors begin to crush the buildings and it will really be epic

small men gathered to kiss its large flat feet
  • "good folk, lock you doors!"

on a village street the prospectors proclaimed

as a guillotine fell in effigy

removing the head of the white beast

the prospectors protested the taking of their homes

yet this small gesture did ignite desiccated minds of deciduous men

"heretics! fools! infidels!" they protested through the high fence

ephemeral intentions now burned in each

as religious men lay with monetary men

as uncertain men, with unstable men

    and money changers with thieves

what odd bedfellow they had all become

and on this prelude night before 10th year of the new age

    on a night so frigid

the tavern was warm, sanguine, and crowded with life

in land that deciduous men declared barren and fallow
  • morning broke into the dark lords chamber with a hiss

"hazzah, the birthday of my master is nigh."

from his beak mharti dropped a sealed letter, "a message from a kievan king"

he rubbed his hands nervously, "hast the window so i may see."

and from the wordless paper fell a map and key with an inscription

he handed mahrti a pouch "make haste and let yourself not be seen"

the portly raven hobbled to the sill and took flight

and how well knew mahrti the route

for many secret deeds have travelled on this path before

but many restless nights dark lord had

in the year of the rooster was born the dark lord

and as the tiger year would soon arrive

he had horrible dark horse dreams of a rogue knight

born in the year of the snake

brandishing not a saber nor pistol

    but a pen
  • in a nearby shadowy land lived a grotesque creature

    al bahni it was called

it had one eye, three large mouths like gaping wounds

and ears so small that one would think it could not hear at all

all these sat divided among three heads

    atop one corputlent belly

    three men they once were

each cursed with a gluttonous disease

    all three fed themselves continually

    eventually feeding on themselves

until they became one heinous monstrosity

but dark lord was a giving lord

he kept his pet well stocked in fodder

it sang a torrid tune as it ate

"for betterment of man, i eat i eat"

"the little common man, defeat defeat"

"from an acorn to a chestnut, a treat a treat"

    the silver head coughed

and from it throat was flung a broken gavel from a fallen judge

"who will judge me now?" is said as it paused to laugh

al bahni gorged on a feast harvested from the downstate

until it grew large enough to crush a house

but it was preened to wreak its havoc on much more
  • a toxic gas called "blight" al bani did manufacture

brewed from its festering swollen belly

a perfect weapon it did procure

invisible, no print to be found

    no bloody trail to follow

no smell, no taste, no sound

    deadly

"oh, to commit a crime so perfect" chortled dark lord

in the river town of yonkereis

a protesting cry was heard from a fallen townleader

    his name, "theyhe"

he was detained with symptoms of an infectious disease

"he gave me blight! it was he! it was the blight!"

    stumbling and pointing frantically

dark green blood dripping from his eyes and nose and ears

he accused what seemed to be empty space

dark lord cloaked in invisibility simply walked away

    yet something was amiss

a cold shiver coursed through his blood as he hastened his gate

on that river town street, in that very town square

a dark horse rogue knight, born in the year of the snake

plucked out his pen and struck a name from his long list
