Danish cartoonist chased into his panic room by intruder

I woke up in the middle of the night and turned on NPR. this was the lead story in the news: the Danish cartoonist who drew those controversial images was at home after 10 p.m. last night when he heard a window smashed. the reports said he pushed his panic button and went into his safe room. A man with an axe and a knife was breaking into his home, and the reports said he was threatening to kill the cartoonist. the cops arrived, dodged the man throwin the axe at them, and shot him in the arm and arrested him.

So...active imagination here...was the cartoonist sitting and got up to look, only to see the man crawling through the window? Was he already inside when the cartoonist spotted him? Was the window in between where he was sitting and the panic room, meaning he had to outrun the guy? Inside the safe room, are there windows so he could see the attempted murderer's face as the murderer tried to get inside? Or, more creepy, are there no windows and the cartoonist c ould only hear someone walking around, looking in all the rooms, and then approaching the safe room and trying the door? Holy sh*t that is creepy. It reminds me of something I read about Letterman, the woman who used to break into his house. Letterman and his gf were making dinner and "spotted [Margaret] in a hallway lurking near the stairs."
