possibly moving to PH
I was all excited about moving into the neighborhood until I started reading this board. Now I am a little freaked out. I read about rapes and muggings and pistol whipping and OMG.
So I am thinking of taking a place on Wash and Park Pl... by the playground. As a single woman in her late 20s, should I be concerned? Would you guys worry about your sister over there? I can still back out at this point...

you read about rapes and pistol whippings on this board? i must have missed those posts. i will say this: i have found the neighborhood to be very safe and fine in most respects. I live on Prospect and Washington, one block from where you are thinking of moving, and I like it just fine. I will say , however, that Park Pl between Washington and Classon is a bit rough, especially by that playground there. I've overheard some folks in the neighborhood say that it's gotten better there lately, but I've also heard people complain. There is a police precinct right on the corner but it's only open part-time, and it's really a sex crimes unit, so don't expect much help there. Maybe there are folks on the board who actually live on that block specifically who could give you better feedback.

So are you comfortable walking home at night down Washington? You walk a block more than I would. And the place is quite literally across from the precinct, right there on the corner.
I am relatively new to NY and spent a year over in Manhattan, so Brooklyn is still new to me. -
If you are scared of pistol whippings, muggings and rape, I suggest you stay in Manhattan (since no crime EVER happens there).

In my year here, I have seen a shooting (UWS), a stabbing (Penn Station) and a gang fight (UES). So I am not nearly as green as I sound, but still... I wouldn't want to move into an area that is definately unsafe, you know? I walked all around PH this weekend and loved it. I didn't feel unsafe at all. Same way I don't feel unsafe up by Parkside and Flatbush. but I also haven't heard of anyone being pistol whipped up there. Can't blame a girl for being a little cautious. (And for the record, I have never trusted those menacing UWSers after that, you know?

I do feel safe walking on Washington at night, however if it's late (after 11 or so) and I'm coming from the city, I usually take a cab home.

If my wife feels safe walking up Franklin Ave (much sketchier [sic] street) late at night, you'll be fine on Washington.

that makes me feel better. (a little). my guess is that I am just going to have to spend tonight tromping around the area and see how it feels before I officially sign anything.
this board is really cool tho. I have been wanting to find a neighborhood that actually feels like a community. You just have happy hours and everything? Wow. See, this is why I am leaving Manhattan. -
Yes, all 6,000 of us converged on Soda Bar the other night. They ran out of Stella.
