FIOS in the Slope?

  • ^nice. I can't wait for FIOS. Anything to get away from TWC . I tried Verizon DSL but it was just too slow
  • Personally FIOS is much more stable than TWC.

The speeds are real nice. I'm usually dl'ing several gigs a day, and nobody has contacted me about any caps ( ie. Comcast).

Although I don't know when it'll arrive in the Slope.
  • Mr. Mike wrote: [quote=doldrums]Time warner has just introduced Roadrunner turbo with speed approaching FIOS for an extra $9.95/mo
    I have roadrunner "turbo."

Enjoy your max 86 kb/s upload speeds. On a good day, in clear weather, and no bittorrenting leeches. I work from home, it's abominable.

Download is ok at 2 Mb / s - decent enough, and it can stream HD from netflix, but still not nearly as fast as it could be.

Tell them the turbo sucks ass and they'll give it to you for free. Worked for me.
  • TWC/RR standard - no "turbo" - at 6:20 pm on a weeknight:

Damn TWC uploads. That's with RR "turbo" in WT
  • TWC is still charging monthly for Digital TV service when nowadays there is nothing but Digital TV. And according to their pricing scheme, you must be subscribed to both the Basic and the Standard services to qualify for DTV. This is the pricing they still advertise on their website. Doesn't make sense. ](*,)

Are you kidding... I'm a lousy 8.60 down and .48 up.

    same w twc
  • This is my "During the day" speed - this is on 7th ave & 15th street:

if anyone is interested, i believe TW now offers wideband in our neighborhood... 50Mbps down / 5Mbps up for $100/month for residential customers

i'm still waiting for FIOS, however.

Hiway robbery. They should offer 5Mbs up as part of their standard service.
  • Potential bad news for all of us still waiting for FIOS - Verizon's not happy with the amount of money they're making.

    http://arstechnica.com/telecom/news/2010/01/fiber-fail-hong-kong-booms-as-verizon-retrenches.ars

Also mentioned in the article? That there's a company in Hong Kong offering *symmetric* 100Mpbs service (e.g. 100Mbps up & down) for $13/mo.

Notes like that which make me hate telcos and cable cos.
  • Road Runner w/ Turbo but not "Extreme" at 10pm on a weeknight
    image

TWC has recently upgraded to allow DOCIS 3.0 in the slope however it is INCREDIBLY expensive, I called to ask how much and was in shock when he said "$99 for 50/10" the guy was like "do you want to set up an appt." no I don't think so, but it is another option.

There are now 5 versions of DOCIS 2.0 offered by TWC
    Lite - 768 Kbps/128 Kbps
    Basic - 1.5 Mbps/384 Kbps
    Standard with Power Boost - 7 Mbps/512 Kbps (bursts: 10 Mbps/512 Kbps)
    Turbo with Power Boost - 15 Mbps/756 Kbps (bursts: 25 Mbps/1 Mbps)
    Extreme - 30 Mbps/5 Mbps (bursts: 50 Mbps/5 Mbps)

I don't know the pricing of lite/basic but Standard is now $33 (if it's more on your bill CALL THEM and get your price reduced!) $9.99 more makes it "Turbo" ($43) $9.99 more after that makes it Extreme. ($53)

Why anybody would pay $46 more than Extreme to go from 30/5 to 50/10 I have no idea but those are the *current* options, and they have changed *very* recently.
  • I know a lot of you are waiting for FIOS, but be warned that I've heard bad stories about trying to cancel your agreement with them if you are not satisfied with their service. Also, they are now doubling their cancellation fee. Here's the link about the fees: http://tinyurl.com/y9a5wm7
  • I saw some guys working on 8th Ave and 15th street today (in front of the Armory) and they said they were there installing FIOS. They said that they were working their way around PS and not to believe any stories about Verizon canceling the projects. They have work orders all around town. They said the tough part is convincing residents to let them into their backyards to install the wires.
  • I know people in NJ with Fios and they have confirmed that the cancellation fee is high - I sincerely doubt the installers know anything about cancellation fees.

Ooooh! That's only a block from me! TWC internet has been fine, mostly. It's the TV that sucks ass. Their interface on digital cable is so terrible and slow and laggy and buggy. I hate it. I detest it.

  • ^ I was excited too. I hope they come by me (in WT) soon. I'll cook 'em a burger if they come to my yard :-)

Have you looked into getting a tivo...It works with Time warner, and is much nicer and easier to use...I've had one for ~10 years and will never give it up...
  • We've considered a Tivo, but the thought of *another* box in our cabinet makes me shudder....
  • 8thandPrez wrote: We've considered a Tivo, but the thought of *another* box in our cabinet makes me shudder....
Get a Tivo. It's the greatest invention since sliced bread. Seriously, I don't even know I'm a TW customer anymore (except when I get my bill). The interface will make you cry with joy.
  • Is it smart enough to catch the real start time of a show if it starts late due to a sports game or something?
  • Flexichick wrote: Is it smart enough to catch the real start time of a show if it starts late due to a sports game or something?
Yes, and so much more. It's like Boone's Farm up against a wine that tastes like the velvet breeches of baby jesus. I ♥ Tivo.

oh, sweet jebus. As if I need another thing to spend money on which will keep me attached to my couch
  • Flexichick wrote: Is it smart enough to catch the real start time of a show if it starts late due to a sports game or something?
I can't even count the number of times I've missed a full 60 Minutes because a football or NCAA game ran late.
  • TWC does have DVR capability. Also I would think the quality of the recording might be in question if you see some corruption during normal viewing as well.

    Exactly.

    Blame Heidi.

No, not that one. Or that one.

  • Well, this certainly exciting, since I am at 8th Avenue and 13th.

However, no FIOS for me yet. You can use this link, and put in your phone number to see if you are wired yet.

... you mean, like, a LAND line? Do they still make those?

Which version of Tivo do you have? I read about the new Premiere version and was a bit worried about the bugs:

    http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/19/tivo-premiere-is-updated-and-expanded-but-is-it-ready/

Still, compared to TWC's DVR, anything is better.
