Good female haircut that won't break the bank?

I like Salon Bohemia on 7th Ave. in South Slope. They're reasonable and also have "junior stylist" rates if you really want to cut costs.

I don't have a rec for you, but just some advise...
what makes a "good" haircut is really subjective, so before you make an appointment, it might be a good idea to do a drive-by at the salon, and see if you like the way people look when they leave. Or, just ask girls on the street where they got their cut - they will be so flattered that they will be happy to help !
The problem with message boards is that you can't see / don't know the people making the suggestion, and while they might want to be helpful, they might also have horrible hair.
I know this because my last haircut was really bad. -
I highly recommend Carmen. PM her and she can probably send you before / after pictures of work she's done. She's done cuts for several people on the board, including me.

Joanne @ Le Petite Chandelier (Le Chandelier's sister salon). It's on 3rd Ave b/w Carroll and Prez. She might also work out of Le Chandelier (on 5th and Garfield) She's cut my hair and two friends' hair too -- we all have pretty different hair types and styles, and they all looked great. Plus the price is right -- I can't remember if it was $40 or $60 (I think $60) for a haircut, and given most salon's rates, I think that's pretty reasonable.

Charmaine at Joseph's on 7th Ave & Union is my go-to stylist. ( I used to go to Medusa myself ). Charmaine charges $45 - and does a better job than cuts I used to get at bumble & bumble for $100+. She's also really nice and its kinda fun to feel like you are in an old school Slope shop. 718-638-5418. they are also very quick, which was always my complaint at medusa - I felt like I was there forever sometimes.

I see Michael at Michael's Hair Studio (7th Ave between 7th & 8th Street). It's around $45 and he does a great job. I can't see spending 100 for a haircut.
-
not sure who you saw at medusa, but i get my hair cut there for about $60. i have relatively short hair with lots of layers, so it's not just for a trim.
-
If you have short-short hair, I recommend Salon Harmony on 7th Ave near Flatbush. Danielle is great. I was especially impressed that right off the bat, she understood how to make short-short haircut feminine even if it's shorter than many mens' haircuts. Not all stylists can do that - I've left more than one salons looking like a boy scout. She charges around $50.

Thanks, Moug!
And to the OP- I can indeed cut your hair and provide you with aprox a billion portfolio pictures, if you're interested. PM me for more info and a portfolio link if you're so inclined! -
Either Tatiana or Leyla at Delilah Salon on 4th Ave near Union are very professional - they are experienced and will give you what you want. My cut is about $35 (for moderately short hair, female)
-
I had a really terrible cut/dye experience at Delilah a few years ago. It was cheap(ish) but my hair looked terrible. I would have been better off doing it myself. For the record, it was a short (about ear-length) female cut.

Wow, thanks everyone!!!

in manhattan aveda has a school - you can make an appointment and a cut is about $30. a student cuts your hair, but a teacher checks it and if something goes wrong you can go back in and they will fix it for free (i have curly hair that when straightened once came out a bit uneven).
also, by doing free cuts at bumble and bumble a few times i've met some stylists who are sweet enough to offer that if i want a cut that isn't quite their set style they are still willing to do it. i think they also have a 'crazy short creative' kind of night where it is a bit of an anything goes, but you have to get on a list -
^^^ queue in Carmen ;-)

www.lifebooker.com
it's a scheduler site all kinds of discounts and gobs of reviews! alas, no pictures, though. -
I'll also add.. I had a bad haircut fixed last year (to a perfect! Bob cut after a bad cut elsewhere) at Chandelier on 5th ave. Marc is his name. In his late 40s? Been cutting hair for over 20 years. Very precise, very detailed, really took his time and looked at my hair at every possible angle to create perfection. Extremely experienced. $30 or $40 bucks with-out a blow out. I think it's $60 for the full style and blow out with products.
I also second Carmen, PM her!
(Ps you still haven't told us what type of hair and style you are looking for! Do a search on this board, I and others have started threads about stylists before with many recs!) -

Starr gave me a great cut and color too, but by the time it was over I was nearly $200 poorer. Granted, I went very, very light (nearly platinum) blonde, but daaayyyum it was pricey.
