Where to get propane for BBQ? — Brooklynian

Where to get propane for BBQ?

Is there a place we can get our tank replaced or refilled? We don't have a kitchen at the moment, but we have a grill with an empty tank. I tried a few of the gas stations on Atlantic and the Home Depot but to no avail.

Any ideas?

Blue Rhino is the McDonalds of propane. I get mine in PA, where everybody sells it. The closest places are going to be NJ according to the locater. Thanks to the FDNY it is not sold anywhere in the City that I know of. Also bringing bottled propane through the tunnels is considered a Terrorist act so leave your turbans at home.

If you have a gas line accessible you can drill out the orifice in the grill's burner and use it that way. (Natural gas is under less pressure than the bottled propane so you need to compensate for that.)
    Well I stand corrected!
    See posts below
  • I usually get mine at the Lowe's in Gowanus. Bring the empty for exchange or you'll have to pay a deposit.
  • Propane is sold in NYC, you just can't fill a tank in NYC. So you have to either do an exchange (as mentioned you can exchange at Lowes) or drop your tank off at a place that takes it out of the city to be filled and brought back. Once such place is Liberty Gas www.libertygases.com which is on the far end of smith st in red hook.

If you're willing to pay a little more you can get it delivered (as with everything else in NYC) http://www.manhattanpropane.com/
