I hate that ad — Brooklynian

I hate that ad

Alright folks.

I'll start.

This one's on radio. And it's e v e r y w h e r e. And it annoys to no end, have to change the channel when it comes on.

Who else has heard the smarny, more-fabulous-than-thou "Smart Cookies" campaign that American Express has been running?

I'm fine with the overall idea of taking control of one's finances (what this group that calls itself the "Smart Cookies" has done, complete with spinning themselves out into books, Oprah etc. and a tv series apparently).

But the radio ads. Ugh. So smarmy.

And the host/narrator of the ads comes off as such a creepy, meager, cutesy-ick house elf. Sounds JUST like this guy:

I don't have the real ad but you can only imagine.

Or perhaps you've also heard them and are just now piecing your blown-off head back toghether. :shaking: ](*,)

Anyhow, that one's tops on my list.

What's yours?

  • Oh- I HATE that one, Jeffrey- there's a whole freakin' series of them- SO annoying. This one girl says something that makes me want to punch her face through my clock radio every morning:

    Something to the effect of....
"So, I like the Amex card, because it follows along with my principles. I have to pay the balance every month and I like knowing that I'm just SO fucking great when I pay it off...."*

Bitch please. The whole idea that created this stupid Smart Cookie thing is that they were ALL IN DEBT to begin with!!! So, yea, tell me more about your principles...NOT.

    *- this is a re-enactment.
  • Speaking of cookies. At least superficially. Just when I'm trying to enjoy my second bagel. I don't think it's on the radio. What's a radio?

I appreciated the fact that people want to lose weight, but not that song at twice the volume.
  • I find the Alanna female model from american apparel ad on gothemist distracting as a male.
  • I can't stand those singing sisters on NY1...
  • Subject: Agreed. Positively nauseating.

It calls to mind those moronic minor-celebrity dowagers of the 90's, the "Beardstown Ladies", who apparently massively inflated their success (duh, who didn't make money in the market in the 90's?).

Sorry, but if a group of men got together and said, "we used to be complete fiscal dunces, now we're trying to do incredibly "smart" things like not run up massive credit card debt at 23% interest rates", I don't think anyone would give a damn, let alone featuring them in an advertising campaign.

    Really?

  • Touche, carnivore but you have to admit that the ubiquitous Cramer is at least subject to ample ridicule, are there any youtube videos dissing the Smart Cookies or the Beardstown Ladies?
