loud work being done in my building — Brooklynian

loud work being done in my building

apartment blues
edited November -1 in Park Slope
My landlord has been hammering away directly below me in the basement for the better part of 2 hours (from about 3pm to 5pm and still going). It is very, very loud and I can feel the thuds. He is either building something or fixing something. Does anyone know if a landlord can do such work without giving the tenants some advance warning?

There are no emergency repairs going on. The hot water and heat are fine.

  • It sounds like he's just building something, and it's not in the early AM or at night. whynot blast some music or watch an action movie, I don't know. Go out for dinner?
I'm sure if he's considerate, by dinner time he'll be done.

Or, you could drop by and ask him what's up and when he plans to be done. You know, be direct. :thumright:
  • I see no reson why a landlord would have to officially let you know that he was working in the basement. As mama said, it isn't early in the morning or late at night, so, just let it be
  • It's probably nothing. Maybe he's just building a coffin.

I am envisioning a great Charles Addams cartoon....
  • As a courtesy, he should have informed his tenants if loud construction work was being done on a Saturday.
  • I don't think he has to tell you -- My landlord never tells us about anything unless it involves him coming into our actual unit. Why not just go downstairs and ask him about what time he'll be done (since I assume it's upsetting a pet/baby/sleeping/etc. of some importance)
  • You don't have rights unless he is disturbing the peace. All landlords have the right to improve the building. This is part of the new building code. However, it would take a community of petitions to stop him from doing his work. Buy the time you are organized then the work could be done. Also, DOB allows him or her to work to 10pm and not before 7:00am. There could be Sunday restrictions.

I've got some questions regarding his business model:

    1. Is it a midget pleasure palace simply because the ceilings at low (i.e. will the palace exist for the pleasure of regular size people?)

    2. Is it a pleasure palace geared toward short people because the ceilings are low?

    3. Is it a pleasure palace which is staffed by short people, for the amusement of regular size people?

If it is option 1, I think his business will be a success. Regular size people will go almost anywhere for pleasure. (ex. White Castle for chicken rings).

If it is option 2, I think you may need to first research the number of short people in the NYC area, prior to investing a large amount of money into the palace.

If it is option 3, I think you should be prepared to receive a letter from the atty that represents the Organization Against the Exploitation of Short People for the Amusement of Regular Size People (OAESPARSP).
  • As an attorney, and a genuine short person, I may very well write that letter myself!
  • sign me up for 1 please :p.
