Maya Taqueria

Wait, am I missing the thread on this? Is it open yet? What is it? Who started it? I thought no one could so much as sneeze on Vanderbilt without a discussion happening over here...

  • It was open when I passed by around 7PM tonight. I picked up a menu - looks good, with the standard burrito fare, though they seem to have some fish and seafood optinos, as well. Good prices, too. I'll have to check it out soon.
  • This restaurant in the former Bob Law's spot opened earlier this week. I haven't tried it yet, but it seems pretty standard. It looked through the window like most of their stuff comes out of steam tables.
  • Tried it last night. Being a transplant from the San Francisco I am always looking for a good taqueria. It isn't perfect but good.
The steam trays are what you find at all taquerias so don't let that stop you from trying it out. It's what holds the ingredients for the tacos and burritos. From what I saw they have all the standards.
I had the Super Burrito. Pollo Asado with the works. It was huge (about the size of a a human head) and cheap. Not quite as good as what you would find in the Mission District of SF but close enough for me.

The guys that own Maya are somehow related to Zaytoons. Family or something like that. I was also told they are also opening up a Bagel place just up the road Vanderbilt.

For me it's a welcome addition. Tasty, friendly and cheap.
  • bagels? baked there? anyone have any intel on that? and i don't know who owns zaytoons and don't want to presume, but might this be the first arab-owned bagel shop?

It's going to be on the corner of Vanderbilt and Prospect in the Chris Wearable Art space. It would be truly awesome if the bagels are good and I'm trying to keep an open mind, but I don't have high hopes. There are so few places that do bagels right.

Just a little mild Brooklyn teasing - but its called "up the block" :)
    Thanks for the heads up.
  • Does maya have a salsa bar? I miss those from sf mission taquerias
  • Had a burrito with tofu last night, and it was awesome. Can't wait to get it again...

Muk, did you move back to the neighborhood? I thought you had left town a while ago!
  • Yes, salsa bar. Not a huge selection but they do have the pickled jalapenos and carrots.
  • I haven't gone anywhere... just more of a lurker these days on the ol' DH.

  • It'll be nice to have a few of those vacant storefronts reopened. It would be amazing if those bagels were done right, but I'm not holding my breath.

So, is Maya in the same spot as Paquena? If not, then did another Mexican manage to sneak in?

Different spot. Maya is in the old Bob Law's spot. Pequena will be in the old Barrette spot.
  • Wow - thanks for the input, everyone! Was in SF not too long ago so my standard may be unattainably high, but will give it a try soon...
  • I had a couple chicken tacos tonight and I have to admit that they aren't agreeing with me right now.
  • Mrs Why and I went tonight. Veggie burrito and chicken chile verde. (with 2 sodas, $18.50).

Yummy stuff. It may be good enough that I do not walk to La Taq in the La Slope.

(La Taq has better food, but it is sometimes too crowded to sit in the non-table service area. ...and its farther away, and its winter).

Back on topic: Huge burritos. Salsa with actual flavor. Spanish music on radio.

--far better than the burrito place on Washington near Dean.

Note: no comparison is made with the place on Classon, because that is not in the Taqueria market.

    More jabbering:
If La Peqeuna does not open up soon, it may lose the coveted "under $10, no need for a alcoholic drink" market to Maya.
  • Tried Maya last night and loved it. Fast, friendly service and delicious food. I had a super burrito with refried beans and grilled chicken. They also carry Jarritos, which makes me happy. I'll definitely go back. I actually think it's better than the tacqueria on 7th and, yes, much less crowded. I'll never go back to Muertos now, especially after seeing their counter guy put his bare hands into the red cabbage.

Vanderbilt just keeps on changing for the better...
  • I just inhaled a mushroom quesadilla from Maya. I give it a big thumbs up. Will definitely be back.
  • Went tonight -- 2 huge vegetarian burritos with great fixings (good beans, tofu, gauc, cheese, lettuce, salsa, rice, sour cream...) and 2 sodas for less than $18. Really good food and everyone seemed nice and friendly. I have never had a bad experience at De Los Muertas, but with this place I doubt I'll be returning - it was much tastier.

-- and for less than $25 we made it a complete date with a stop afterwards for $3 pints during happy hour at Soda next door.
  • Just passed by and the place was jammed. I agree with xlizellx, this place is much tastier.
  • I tried steak tacos which was really good. So glad that Maya has opened
  • Ate there on Sunday. The food was good, but not a replacement for La Taq, as far as I'm concerned. However, they deliver up to 11 or 12 at night, and have plans to deliver until 2 a.m. in the near future. This, I love.

Really? That is truly great news. It's weird how there are now about 20 bars in Prospect Heights, but almost no quick food options after 11pm.

I agree. I was disappointed with my first attempt there and definitely didn't think they were as good as La Taq, but I'm going to give them another chance or two before writing them off.
  • I stopped by last night and had a fish and a shrimp taco and they were unbelievable, Maya is a welcome addition to this neighborhood
  • anyone have a link to a menu? the ones i've been able to find are inoperable. and there's nothin like a snow day with hot gooey human-head sized burritos to keep you and your margaritas warm :D
  • I have the menu. Basically a regular burrito (meat, rice, beans, salsa) is $5.25

A "deluxe" adds cheese for $5.75
A "special" adds cheese and guac $6.25
A "super" adds all of the above plus lettuce and sour cream $6.95

Tacos run you $2.95-3.95 for the seafood type

They also do platters (rice and beans, guac, sour cream, salsa plus a meat or seafood) for around $10-14

The menu doesn't show the meat selections exactly, but you can tell they have Prawns, Fish, Chicken Chile Verde (which sounds really good!), tofu, Chicken/Carne Asada or shredded, Fajita, and Chile Relleno (another of my favorites -if done right)

Plus quesadillas, nachos, salads and rotisserie chicken (which seems like a deal at $5.50 for 1/4 chicken with rice/beans/salsa/tortillas)

    Phone #718-638-6292

:D I am too nice to you guys :P
  • You can also get any burrito "chimmied", or turned into a Chimichanga. That means they deep fry the burrito and drench it in mole and cheese. Delicioso.

Not sure what the price is on this, because the chimichanga is listed as cheaper than the burrito on the menu - but that doesn't make sense and I tossed the receipt before I could check it out.
  • The chimichanga is $6.25 but only comes with meat,rice,beans... other salsa/mole/cheese is added on top afterward... not sure if that's extra or not?
  • That's what I'm sayin... I got a steak fajita burrito chimichanga, which I can't imagine costs less that the steak fajita burrito. :-&
