Make Parking Easier??

  • Whynot, just focus on the gizmo....expandable car. It just needs to grow to take 3-4 parking spots during non-peak times, and then contract during peak times, yielding 3 "gives" with no effort on your part!
  • I really think the way to make parking easier is to charge a reasonable rate for it. The city is giving it away.

Most parking in Park Slope is free and you can store you car there for a week or more with out moving it. The metered spots are so cheep merchants store their vehicle there all day.

...but it has to look like an actual car so people looking for parking don't vandalize them.

So, my first thought of a fleet of inflatable cars (based on the technology used in emergency life rafts) won't work.

    I'll keep thinking.

Ok, my second idea involves fake fire hydrants. I put them up to save spots, then remove them once I sell the spot. This idea also has problems: a. FDNY will not be pleased, and they have axes to express their displeasure. b. Some people know where the hydrants are supposed to be.

    I'll keep thinking.

    ...or just laugh from PH.

Now that sounds like it could be patentable!

But wait, there's more! The expandable car, when not in use holding parking spaces, can be used as a stretch limo! Think of the money that can be made during May and June, when high schools have their proms...
  • Clearly, I would want to deploy the devices right after A.S.S. parking hours end. So, at 11:30 AM on most blocks.

Maybe I could use an expanding technique like those RV's you see in the midwest?

    image

An RV would allow me to sleep, drink beer, toilet and watch TV while I waited for business.

...holy shit, look at this invention! here's what I need! The "Honda Accordian" gotta love that name!

So, I need some $ to buy a fleet of these.

I still want the RV so I could have a mothership from which to control my fleet of Accordians. I could walk around the RV while wearing a Darth Vader mask; as part of my role as the enemy of Park Slopers WITH cars and WITHOUT money to participate.

I'd do all this while employing Brooklynians who were unemployed, so I could get non-profit status, all while paying myself $200k a year!

As per NYS regs I'll need a token board that meets at least once a year. Booklaw, Arches, etc. you in?

    image

    I am brilliant.
  • I'm in if we can eventually form a subsidiary that purchases a fleet of these and drives around PS repositioning poorly parked cars to "make" spots.

    image

We'll have exploited all parking arbitrage opportunities at that point!
  • ^ Disclaimer:

May be susceptible to ewoks bearing large logs
  • I'm definitely in! I love it!
  • Arches, absolutely! Those things are all robotics... they've completely gotten rid of humans. My hoard of unemployed, unwashed Brooklynians could have no show jobs.

I have the following in place:

    1. Consumer demand and unmet need for the service.

    2. The infrastructure and outstanding staff members.

    3. A Board of Directors

    4. A blue eyed cat who clearly knows about the ever present threat posed by Ewoks. (This will also allow me to meet diversity guidelines. I've been told blue eyed cats are under represented in the parking arbitrage industry).

    5. Twitter.

    6. Ugly red jacket I never wear.

    7. Extensive knowledge on forming and operating non-profit 501c3's. I'm thinking religious organization may be the way to go, that way folks can claim their membership fees as donations on their taxes.

We are clearly "shovel ready"! Now, it's time to get some stimulus money from Obama....

Note to self: Protect mothership by making sure Favorite Nemesis Scarlett does not get her hands on an X-Wing fighter.

  • do you guys seriously wait 30 min for a spot? is it just b/c you have a burning need to park on your block only? or is this a north slope thing?

b/c here in far south slope (15th st), it just takes one or two turns around the block... unless it's sunday nite and then i have to walk 3-4 blocks...

When I had a car it was not unusual for me to drive around for 20-40 minutes looking for a spot within a 8 street, 2 ave radius of my apartment (on 7th st and 6th ave.) When I lived on 7th ave and 15th st I rarely even had to circle the block.
  • So now that the program has been up and running for a few weeks, do any subscribers wish to tell us how much improved their parking experiences are? I am genuinely curious to hear stories, good or bad, about this thing.
  • I've been getting text spam from Roadify....not too often, just enough to piss me off. I've asked them to stop spamming me, but I get the standard automated reply.

Does anyone know how to block a 5-digit texting address on Verizon wireless? I did sign up for this, but now I want to stop it.
  • Verizon customer service should be able to give you the correct phone/text number to stop Roadify.

If they cannot, Verizon tech support should be able to do it. You may need to go up to a level two or higher tech, but I doubt that will be necessary.

Why not just go to their website and send them an email asking to be taken off their texting list? Since you signed up for it, I don't think it can technically be called spam, but, I am sure if you write them via email, they will take care of it.
  • and again, i ask: does anyone have reviews of the service? is it as useful or as useless as you envisioned?
  • Hey folks. It's Dylan with the Roadify team. Loving the support and critiques of the service. There have been a lot of good points posted over the last couple of months and I wanted to take the opportunity to respond.

    1. Texting and driving is last thing we aim to promote. Instead, we are promoting our 30 for 30 campaign: Spend 30 seconds by pulling over to send your text and save 30 minutes of circling the block.

    2. It is important for all of our users to understand that no one is entitled to any spot or should save/hold spots for other users. PAM improves your chances of finding a decent spot, but it can't guarantee one. First-come is still first-served. The beauty of our system is that people can be giving and getting spots that don't even exist yet through a GIVE in advance.

    3. We are already seeing that critical mass accumulating. With our 500+ user base growing everyday, PAM gets more helpful. Helping to spread the word about PAM means that you're actively helping to get more spots for yourself.

    4. BAM (BusesAroundMe) is going to be unveiled later this month. As Roadify's second solution to improve commuting, BAM users will be able to GIVE and GET information on bus locations they care about. We're combining the MTA schedule (which is rarely exact) with user-generated info to create an updated, better schedule.

Email us at [email protected] for updates on BAM's grand opening or with any questions regarding PAM.

    Keep on GIVING!

    Sincerely, Dylan
  • OK, I was going to write an email but since you are all over this board, I am going to make my comments here.

I signed up for this on the day when it began in November, I have quite a few "Carma" points, I try to give spots all the time, even if I am just walking down the street.

But, I have to say, I must be the only one out there doing it! Because out of all the many times I have tried to 'get" a spot, only once, ONCE, were there any spots available. You know what those spots were? One was the spot I myself had 'given" moments before, then there were 2 others.

Out of the other 2, one was a spot posted 49 minutes earlier and one was a spot posted 3 hours!! earlier! I give up, I really do, I just don't see the point in this anymore, maybe I am having bad luck, but, every single time from November until now when I try to 'get" a spot?

I am sorry because I thought it sounded like a good idea but I am beyond frustrated with the entire system!
  • LongTimeSloper: Sorry to hear the dismay. Unfortunately for some of our early supporters like yourself, there was a lull between Thanksgiving and New Years where people (users and staff alike) were preoccupied by other types of GIVEs and GETs.

But things are on the up. Since January 2, our "surge" has resulted in growing numbers. Yesterday alone, there were 45 GIVEs from users like yourself and 20 new users sign up daily.

I sincerely apologize for the lull and know it won't happen again. While this is an unpaid, volunteer-based crew, we are still dedicated to making your commute easier.

Don't give up yet, just when it's really getting going. We've met several people on the streets who have come up to us telling us that the system works. I look forward to hearing the same from you once we've proved it's true.

    Thanks,
    Dylan
  • The scenario i just told you about where I was offered spots that were 49 minutes and 3 hours old happened just this past Sunday. Why aren't spots that old just taken off the system??

You should defect to the system that Arches, Booklaw and I will soon launch.
  • And, the same thing has been going on for me since Jan. 2nd, no spots no matter what time of day or night I ask.

  • Oh I am so shocked, shocked! that this system doesn't work. Good luck with the surge.
