  • just came back from watching the England - Trinidad Tobago game

TT's suffocating physical defense was able to hold England scoreless for 80 minutes
Crouch ate about 10 opportunities to score -- until he finally headed one pass into the goal

TT's defense wore down in the final ten minutes and England was able to score 2 goals to win the match

If TT had some offense, they could have won the match
  • Excellent summary quijibo!

I can't wait to see Ecuador v England
As for T+T, there's 2010 and time to work on that offense.

They're good sports, those Trinis! It would be awesome if they managed to score 2 against Paraguay next Tuesday, to advance . . .

I'm finding it hard to get excited about watching Italia kick the ass of USA on Saturday. Anybody else?

    Pitu, those are fighting words!
  • oh man. Argentina seriously PWND Serbia Montenegro 6 - 0

the US team sucketh. truly. if soccer were as popular here as in the rest of the world, our team would be as unbeatable as we are at basketball/baseball

imagine all of the American basketball/baseball greats if they had grown up loving soccer...
Michael Jordan would have been unbeatable as a striker...
    Kobe Bryant? wow.
  • Kobe grew up in Italy, and loves soccer!

We lose 1 game, and everyone turns on ya! Such is life in Int'l soccer.

Different game, different team on Saturday. Mark my words.

you wanna meet at the black sheep on saturday for the 2nd half?
  • ic96 wrote: Kobe grew up in Italy, and loves soccer!
yeah baby, but he doesn't PLAY it professionally.
I'm going to the beach while you kids enjoy the travesty.
  • I'll be in Manhattan, sorry.

Was thinking of staying in Brooklyn, but I have to be in NJ around 5-5:30pm, so just going to take the Path over after the game.
  • Ghana! YES YES YES!!!

wow, Ghana rocked the house . . . they had one goal when I left today. Then I got this shocking text message that the US tied Italia . . .

then my source said the US goal was off the Italian's foot

quijibo, can you clear this up for me?
  • It was an own goal so technically, the USA haven't scored yet. Sorry to rub that in.

I was proud to be Ghanaian today- roll on Thursday!!
  • yes. the american team should have scored a goal by now

the game was ugly. but the americans came to jam

    in interviews, the american team
mentioned their need for redemption after the initial game loss
-- about doing whatever it takes to win a world cup game
especially when the referee is not looking

adding to the mix, this man:
    image
this man, Jorge Larrionda, FIFA referee from Uruguay threw out 2
americans on questionable cards. Larrionda has a history of "irregularities"
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jorge_Larrionda

1 Italian player was also ejected for a flagrant foul resulting in
    Brian McBride's bloody maw:
    image

    21 min: Italy scores 1 : 0
    26 min: Italy scores own goal 1 : 1
27 min: De Rossi hits McBride. red card. out
44 min: American Mastroeni ejected on questionable red
46 min: American Pope is ejected on 2nd yellow

soooo. America played half of the game down a man

the goalie keller played the game of his life
if not for his timely saves, Italy would have won
    image

70 min: American goal disallowed on offsides call

very little soccer was actually played in the match
more shirtpulling and hooliganism than anything...
  • worldcup.reuters.com for the one who asked (great pix but the writing can get flaky)
  • Greetings from Madrid where Spain just beat Turkey 3-1 even though they played like shite. The people are CRAZY in the streets ....you can hear cheering and fireworks. They are all over the fountain where they usually celebrate Real Madrid victories (Plaza del Colon). It's crazy.

    Viva Espana!
  • oops

    Fernando Torres

don't try that shait with ecuador, we'll cutchyou pendejo!!!
  • I know! Go, Fernando Torres, whoever you are!

That said, Spain played a crap game in general. Defense was terrible....they missed many offense opportunities, etc.

Ah, well. People here are still happy. 'Cept for me, because I'm tired. Nighty Nite.
  • ay mierda!
poor ecuador got mugged in front of a stadium filled with germans in germany playing the german national team

a quick german goal in the 4th minute unnerved them even further
    and that's all she wrote

    bring on the 2nd round.
    let's play elimination!!!!

    with england
  • While I think it's best to play Sweden, England has played like crap recently, and being that they haven't beaten Sweden in 38 years, it's hardly a gimme.

Ecuador didn't even start 5 of their best players, so it can be said that the Ecuadorian coach didn't really care one way or the other who they played.

Better to have your best players available for your next game in that case, IMO.
  • i know. i know
the coach was resting his best players

but it still hurts to get your ass kicked
even if it's in your strategic best interest for the long term

    merde

and yes. after seeing england play.
they ain't going nowhere this year
  • ok. there's one thing i know
i think most everybody knows this
do not give david beckham a free kick
do not give david beckham a goal
    image

and so ecuador lost 1-0 versus england today

the ecuadorean offense couldn't figure out england's defense

this was an overtime/shootout match from the first kick
and then the ecuadorean team makes a mistake

    image
"Ecuadorean fan cries after conclusion of match"

i still think it's amazing that this little tiny banana republic
can field such a good game against a team of england's caliber
kinda like the bad news bears with a south american flava

    2010 here we come! :D

Anyone know if the Black Sheep Pub, The Lighthouse or The Gate is showing the England v. Portugal game on Saturday?

    Thanks!

T&T was my team, but I was digging Ghana.

A car service driver told me England beat Portugal -- I just found out he was misinformed DAMN! I think he was just distraught and in shock over Brasil.
    France . . . knocking out Brasil . . . kills me.
Death to Frenchy! I am soooo not interested in a Germany/France final.

    mkbmusic,
all those places and more are showing the games
    Loki too
The Calexico diner on Fifth is great for breakfast games.
The Vietnamese restaurant on Fifth was showing the Brasil games on a rented widescreen but that's all over now.
  • I don't even know who to root for anymore. tis quite depressing.
  • i'm gonna root for germany now
cuz germany beat ecuador so germany winning the whole thing
    kinda redeems ecuador's loss to them {weird logic i know}

but in truth, i really don't care anymore

i was shocked to learn of Brasil's loss to the francs
my heart aint in rooting for no frenchies

    portugal who?

and the devil in me is happy to see rooney's overrated fame deflate so quickly

oh yes. argentina. germany's Torsten Frings is probably gonna miss the game against Italy for throwing a punch at argentinian Julio Cruz
after germany's win over argentina. smart...
