90s Pop Star Crystal Waters Helps Homeless Shelter
(posting this for the lovely lady, leticia james, karl)
"I don't know which is colder, Brooklyn in January, or what the Barclays Center/Atlantic Yards project and the City and State of New York are doing to the homeless families on January 15. Keep this shelter open till it's warm out."
-- NYC Councilwoman Letitia James
Pop Star Crystal Waters comes to Brooklyn to help City Councilmember Letitia James force the city to keep a homeless family shelter open until spring 2010. This shelter is scheduled to be closed by the City on Martin Luther King's Birthday (Jan 15). Its slated for demolition to create a construction vehicle parking lot for Barclays Bank's sports stadium.

Water's hit, "She's Homeless" will be performed to raise awareness. Crystal Waters, Letitia James, residents, homeless organizations including Picture the Homeless, and more political leaders and organizations are expected to attend. The press conference will follow at Freddy's Bar in Prospect Heights.
"The Barclays Center is having the city close the shelter, and having the state take it by eminent domain in the dead of winter, and on Martin Luther King's Birthday. This is wrong and unnecessary. Nothing will be built in place of the homeless shelter for decades…if ever. Replacing beds for our city’s most vulnerable -- with a parking lot-- is simply unconscionable,” said James.
This shelter has beds for 88 families ranging from couples to families with small children. It is scheduled to be shut down by the City of New York, and condemned by Eminent Domain by New York State at the request of Barclays Bank's Barclays Center basketball arena and its developer Bruce Ratner on January 15.
Since Barclays is in England, and has no branches in New York, she is asking Barclays to have a heart and ask the City and State of New York to keep the shelter open, at least until spring so families that become homeless in New York's cold winter will have an indoor place to sleep. We need to think of all the homeless, and especially the kids out there in the cold this year.

Will you be reciting some of your poetry? If so, I shall attend.

everyone wants one -
You two are seriously adorable.

Karl maybe you can weave one of your yarns with back round music ,Crystal's great song "100% Pure Love"

This is a deceptive comment at best. A link provided by your heroes, Develop Don't Destroy, notes that these families will be transferred to another shelter and will still have "an indoor place to sleep".

As always, the timing of these events couldn't be worse: during a long/holiday weekend when many of the alleged 5000 "supporters" will be out of town, on the day when may, despite whatever lip service they've played to opposing AY, will be getting drunk and watching NFL playoffs, and one day AFTER the shelter is scheduled to close. Great job, guys. It's no wonder that these events get such a scant turnout and are woefully ineffective.
But, then again, "raising awareness" is so, so important. So is reciting poetry by talented local "artists". I am confident that these efforts will stop the arena. -
my, that took a while for a krohning
jack you're slipping
la da dee

Barclays doesn't have retail branches in NYC but they certainly have a NYC presence, NYC offices. Weird statement.
-
im sure this event went well
what percentage of the alleged 5000 "supporters" attended?
i noticed that tonight, jan 18, a vigil will be held
between 10pm and 12am
on a work night
real smart
great planning
as always
i know that the streets will be filled
with "supporters"
how many?
5, 10, 12?
the fight is far from over -
Jack: I'd say the event went very well. You should have been there. It was filled to capacity, but no, not all 5000 were in attendance.
-
oh my, i nearly forgot
jack, thanks for reminding us about the
mlk night family shelter vigil

thank you, sweet jack, for getting this important message out
at such late minute notice
what a great pal you are jackie
oh sweet jack
see you there -
hmm homeless shelter vs stadium, well call me heartless bastard, but i take a stadium over any homeless shelter any day of the week.
-
ugh. i bet you anything you get less pee on the streets with a shelter than with thousands of drunken sports fans.

the homeless shelter will not
be used as part of the stadium
the plans are to use this space
for commercial vehicle storage
that will not come into play until 2011
at the earliest -
Karl: i think the plan is to use this entire city block as construction storage/staging for arena construction, and then as a "temporary" surface parking lot (24/7) until the rest of atlantic yards is built, whenever that might be.

For those who (like me) had no idea who Crystal Waters is/was:

Note: I take no position on the closing of the shelter, but might walk by tonight with the mutt. -
Where did this stereotype of sports fans pissing in the streets come from? Most of my friends and family and I have been attending baseball, football, and hockey games our entire lives and have never pissed in the streets. As difficult as it might be to imagine, all sports venues come equipped with restrooms and patrons who wait patiently to use them before, during, and after games.
If anything contributes to pissing in the streets, it's a concentratiion of bars and young college grads (i.e. the type of establishment and patron associated with a place like Freddy's). -

not likely with a precinct across the street from freddy's
but you seem to have such great knowledge
of public urination
do share your wisdom -
from what i've read
the shelter protest attracted a whopping 20 people
what happened to the alleged 5000 supporters?
why didnt more people show up
all shelter residents were relocated to other shelters while
others found permanent housing
so your attempts to portray this as dumping families
on the cold, cold streets of nyc was a lie
your failure has no limits
worry not, for your work is soon to end
next week the displacement will officially begin
your homes will be taken for a better cause
you have lost
but at least i will always have your exquisite poetry to read
forever -
wacky jackie
you've lost your caps
somewhere back in crown heights
it's not to late to recover them -
ah yes
fleeting memories, vanished time
jackie lad, remind me
although your home
to ratner you wanted to sell
your home he did not acquire
please remind why
three good reasons there were
i recall -

in my case, from spending too much time near the supposedly ideal urban stadium that is wrigley field. -
