Tip the convenience store clerk? — Brooklynian

Tip the convenience store clerk?

Hey all

I got the vibe the other day that I should have tipped (Holiday) the convenience store clerk when I made a purchace the other day.

I tip the garage guys and the UPS guy and the mailman..but the convenience store clerk? really? Am I missing something?

Comments

  • RU kidding? No way!
  • the last thing i tipped was a cow.
  • We tipped ours this year because we got to know them a lot better, and they also help us out with package deliveries.

    I wouldn't say it's a common/required thing, though.
  • OK thanks for the insight. he is a good guy and all, but I was surprised by his implication.
  • The UPS guy? The mailman? Convenience store clerk?

Tipping has gotten way out of hand. The only people I tip are Fresh Direct guys who hump my groceries all the way up to the 4th Floor. They deserve five bucks.

/never order takeout food deliveries, would tip them if I did
  • I've never heard of this, unless the person goes out of their way for you in some extraordinary way. You gave the store your business, and that alone should be appreciated. If its not, you could consider shopping elsewhere.
  • My standing rule is if someone brings me something (e.g. the Domino's guy), they get tipped. If I bring it to them (e.g. the 7-11 guy), they don't. An actual server such as Dunkin Donuts or the Blue Marble is case by case.
  • My rules for tipping convenience store person:

    Tip at the holiday if:
They take packages in for you all year round
    Hold keys for you
Let you slide often when you are short

    Tipping outside of the holiday:
If you win more than $500 by playing lotto at their store.

the UPS guy because he really goes out of his way, I havent tipped the mailman since I move here because I really don't know who he/she is...which is odd to me, and the convenience store....dont think so.
  • I've always tipped the mail carrier everyplace that I've lived, but I stopped after my first year in my current place, because I currently get the absolute worst mail service I've ever had anywhere (even including the Bronx).

    I like stacey's list.
