Woodwork, new bar on Vandy in the old Indigo Blu space
Stopped by tonight. Great bottled beer selection. Kitchen open until at least 3am. Waffles, both sweet and savory available, and delicious. Wine and whiskey are planned to be the specialties, although they don't have the whiskey stocked yet. And soccer/football all the time.
Great bar, and a friendly atmosphere, and the space is much better utilized than in its Indigo Blu incarnation. I plan to be back often.

Sounds cool!

Yes, and not expensive! They don't have any drinks over $11, and most beers are $5 or $6.
And the food menu while obviously limited with a convection oven, water heater, and waffle iron as the main implements, is also very ambitious.
I have high hopes for this place.
The official grand opening is February 5th. -
What soccer league do they follow?

I'm not really a soccer enthusiast, but I was told they'd have "all the games." I heard specific talk of Arsenal, but again, I don't really know what I'm talking about in that regard. -
What kind of beer we talking about? No drafts?
-
....and where is "the old Indigo Blu space"?
-
Vanderbilt and Dean Street
-
I'm grateful to have a spot to watch the Gunners so close to home.

no great games being played in la liga this week
also for first time or casual footbal fans the UNITED STATES captain is playing with everton till the end of the season so its pretty interesting to watch him play Landon Donovan is the closet to beckham we have ever had in this counry. -
I'm hoping they have some SPL games instead of having to trek to the Blue Room on the upper east side
-
I stopped by last night. Amazing spot. One needed in Prospect Heights/Park Slope that doesn't exist. This is a bar for both the hardcore fan and the casual fan but regardless of footy they had a Portuguese table wine for $8 that was absolutely smooth and lovely. Didn't try any food but will when I go over Saturday night.
I think they have Setanta and Gol so they are trying to show pretty much everything from EPL, La Liga, Serie A and Champions League. If SPL is on one of those services I'm sure they'll show the matches if you ask.
It's a pretty intimate vibe. They even had the Catalan flag hanging in the back. -
Subject: Open date?
So can anyone go in there now? or do they not open until February? Do they only serve waffles? -

Anyone can go in.
They don't have the full food menu yet, but they do have waffles (sweet and savory), grilled cheese, charcuterie plate, sticky buns and a few other items now. They will also have Dub pies, entrees with meat and veg cooked en papillote and more. I tried a waffle with truffle cheese and soppresata last night and it was great! -
That's the place where the landlord shot and killed someone a few years back. From what I hear the landlord is out of jail, still owns the building and lives upstairs.
Here's the article from dailyheights:
newspaper items have focused on gun-toting landlord Clement Calixte, the 67-year-old “Bible-thumping Brooklyn community activist” and ex-auxiliary cop who police say fatally shot a man in around 1 pm at the Vanderbilt Avenue bar space.
Apparently, the altercation was related to the eviction of tenant Alan Henry, proprietor of Indigo Blu. The guy who got fatally shot was helping Alan prep for the move, it seems.
What was Alan’s role in all this? Did he bring it on himself, so to speak?? The Daily News story certainly didn’t cut him much slack:
“Calixte had been in housing court just hours before trying to get Henry - who allegedly owed $19,000 in back rent - tossed from the building.”
” ‘He was supposed to be evicted today,’ the landlord’s wife said. ‘This is what happens when you have bad tenants.’”
Bad tenants? What about Alan’s side of the story? Insuremeeg writes: “Daily News got the story completely wrong… Try as he might, Alan couldn’t make rent because the constant harassment (noise complaint calls to the police, locking him out of his portion of the basement and then shutting off Alan’s lights during a busy night) and he had decided to give up at this location.”
So what exactly caused this altercation anyway? Not sure, but people on the boards say that apparently things were not too placid between Alan and Clement, who repeatedly complained about the noise coming from the bar below the apartment he lived in…
I wonder if the new owners know this about their landlord? -
I talked to 2 of the owners about that very question, and they know all about it; the landlord is bound by their lease to never enter the bar.
They did their homework and definitely went into opening this place with eyes open. -

That is awesome and I believe the SPL renewed their contract with Setanta so I just might be in luck. Cheers!

any drafts, what kinds and how much?
-
No drafts, but great bottles. The full opening is Feb 5

The owner dont live upstairs anymore, moved out to florida or something like that so dont worry you`ll be safe there. Plus you got Ross`s soccer team there most of the nights to protect if anything happens.
Best part of the bar is that I can ask them to put Boca Juniors games on! -
exactly WHY is the landlord out of prison? (i'm normally pretty much a bleeding heart about this stuff, but really?)
-
ahhh, I have no idea why he is out, im just glad he is not anywhere near brooklyn!

From the NY Daily News, dated 12/12/07:
Aux cop beats slay rap
A former auxiliary police officer charged with shooting his tenant's helper during a Brooklyn rent dispute was acquitted of murder charges Tuesday.
Clemente Calixte, 69, claimed self-defense for the Nov. 8, 2006, shooting of George Henry at a Prospect Heights bar, and jurors said there wasn't enough evidence to prove otherwise.

Was there on Tuesday evening and have to say that it is pretty much the perfect neighborhood bar. Devoid of pretension, elegant yet homey all at once. Will be there often!
-
Stopped by yesterday afternoon/evening with the Mrs. and have to say we may have a winner here, imho of course. Met both owners (Mike & Ross), Ross being the soccer/football fanatic. He's even printing up the weekly schedules of matches for the bar and is open to putting any requested matches that are available. This also means they have some crazy hours, they open at 8am, and close fairly late. Ross is there everyday, all day apparently, that's some dedication.
Food was tasty, and the beer/whisky/whiskey selection reasonable along with the pricing. They mentioned there will be taps before the world cup, big plus. I know where my ass will be planted for many a future match. -
Also stopped by with the Mrs. yesterday. They were severely unprepared (probably just surprised) for the crowd, but, other than that, it was a nice time. It's a great addition to the neighborhood, which I'll visit frequently.
Howdy, Stranger!
