(as close as I've found to) INDESTRUCTIBLE PLUSH DOG TOY!

So while Bruno is only 6ish lbs, he manages to reduce plush toys to a pile of fluff in mere minutes (literally.) Squeakers are removed within 10 minutes and fiberfill is all over my apartment shortly thereafter. Kongs and other rubber toys will make it 2-5 days. He ate an entire leather belt in less than 10 minutes (as in there was only scraps of leather remaining and he was pooping leather for days.) He does not screw around with toys

I was becoming desperate. His grandmother has bought him about 15 plush toys but I can't even leave them with him because he EATS the fabric and fiberfill, which makes for unpleasant digestional issues... I thought he would never have another toy for more than 2 days until...
TUFFYS DOG TOYS
(see here although I bought mine on amazon) http://vipproducts.com/retail/files/index.php?cPath=27

He's had the octopus for two weeks and it barely shows any wear. Its huge and heavy and filled with squeaky goodness and he has not been able to permeate even ONE seam. There is the very slightest fraying on one of the 8 legs but I anticipate it taking him weeks to get through it, if he even can.

SPEND THE $20. BUY THE TOY. They're still soft enough to squeak (even for his little face) and to cuddle with, which he does, but are stupid durable. The site says the ring thingies float too, which would be good for you dogbeach people.

do it. Your dog will thank you. Also be aware that these things are BIG- the octopus is sort of ridiculous to see bruno carrying and he can barely drag it up onto the couch. They're clearly made for larger breeds.

  • LNelson has these really neat toys for her dog. I was impressed how hardy they were. Almost rope-like but shaped like animals. Hopefully she'll chime in?
  • those rope toys are the worst for him (if its a real rope one) he shreds them and eats the fibers, which are really long...this creating, eh, "fun" time with the poop-scoopin.

Read all these threads, DD! You're signing yourself up for this ;)

oh, that's just wrong! Both the reality and the imagery!
  • I confess, I have tried the Tuffy toys twice, thinking my first experience was a fluke. But no, my 16 pound dog managed to poke a whole and commence shredding within 5 minutes (max), the other lasted about 30 minutes. The overall destruction of the toy did take a day or two, but he was well on his way in mere minutes. No joke. He loves plush toys and will play with the flattened "carcasses" for awhile after, but I am STILL on the prowl for a good toy (with a squeaker and/or plush) he can't destroy quickly. His CUZ toy is pretty good (but friggin' LOUD!). For dogs who LOVE to chew, I highly recommend ANTLERZ - they're not soft and you shouldn't throw it, but for serious chewing, it ROCKS!
  • Yeah, I think it Bruno is just too small to destroy it, which is def awesome for you :) I'd give my destroyer 5 minutes to do some damage if he were trying.
  • Yeah, I just tried a Tuffy toy with my JRT and it only lasted about 10 mins before there was a hole. However, the whole destruction process (to popped squeaker, shredded fabric, and stuffing all over my floor) took her much longer than usual. She actually didn't get it totally unstuffed - I think the Tuffy wore her out.

Actually, I noticed the Tuffy toys have a toughness scale. The toy she had last night was a 7. I'll look for an 8+ next time. Willing to give it another shot. I think Bruno's octopus is an 8. I wish they made smaller versions of the 10s, though - they're almost as big as my dog. =/

For anyone looking for these toys locally, I got mine at Sean Casey/Hamilton Dog House. Woman there told me they deliver (!) so maybe we'll try another with our next kibble order.
  • i do admit brunito is small but the fact that he ripped apart a medium sized kong in 2 days convinces me that hes a serious chewer...although I will admit that i wouldnt expect a german shepard to not rip apart anything. I was impressed that its lasted as long as it has...at this point im aiming for toys having a longer lifespan, not being totally invincible!
  • seriously, if your dog is a die-hard chewer, i have had great luck with "antlerz". they are, well, a piece of an antler. consider it a natural, non-synthetic nylabone. it's really tough and my dog chews it for a bit every day. they come in different sizes, so you could get a thicker one. they don't smell or stain. it is one of the few toys that have a favorable time-to-money ratio...at least for my dog.
  • dda- where did you get the antlerz? I saw them online but most places they were double the price after shipping...anywhere local carry them?
  • carmen - i bought a bunch at rowf in brooklyn heights (i think), but i believe they are no longer in business (i'm not sure). i have seen some under another brand name at whiskers in the village (e 9th st). whiskers doesn't seem like the type of place to sell shady stuff, but i would see what company it is and make sure they're legit - apparently, some of the antler-type toys are less non-synthetic than others. but like i said, whiskers doesn't seem like it sells crap - i may need to go there and check them out as well.
ALSO, i am happy to report a squeaker, non-rubber toy that has lasted more than 24 hours chez dda. it's a fire house squeaker toy - the material is, well, like a fire hose. now, i can't say it has lasted this long because it is indestructible...because my dog might just actually like it. got it in bay ridge, will report back if it continues to stand the test of time...or a dog. here's hoping...
  • The NYC Pets around here might have the antlers. It's funny to me to buy those. I grew up in a bit more rural area than this and our dogs had a steady supply of fresh deer antlers (as well as all the bones and some hog bones). They lasted about as long as the bones (we had one dog that could eat an entire skull in about an hour).

The fire hose stuff lasted about 3 minutes with my guy and his teeth are not very sharp, but his will is persistent.

while i think you may be right, i am trying to think positively. :D he seems to dig the toy and wants to play with it for a bit...probably before trashing it. he did that with another toy...i was so psyched to think i found a suitable toy. then, he got bored with it. 30 seconds later, gone. oh well. maybe he'll REALLY like it and it'll last for awhile (low expectations here).
  • I will check these places out, dda- thanks!

As a sidenote, I find it cute that we're all talking about the same destruction issues with different sized dogs- bruno is 6-7lbs and I know shep has to be 50+lbs while DDA's critter looks in the middle somewhere (what *is* he anyway?!) Thanks for sharing, guys!
  • agreed - a dog hellbent on destruction know no limits in breed or size!

rudolph is not quite in the middle - weighing in at a whopping 15 lbs...all of it sheer attitude and some hair. he's a terrier mix that i like to call a brooklyn terrier - not as snooty as those boston terriers. i have been meaning to post a few pictures but in all my daftness i haven't quite figured out how (sad, i know...) but one of these days...

be sure to keep us all in the loop of any good, difficult-to-destroy toys!
  • he looked terrier-ish (wirehaired, amirite?) looks like a total cutie! How old is he? At 15 lbs hes just the right size for bruno- he usually plays "too rough" for other dogs his own size (according to their owners) and gets along quite well with the jack russels, bostons, large-breed puppies and frenchies... we should organize a doggie playdate on this board! We just need to find someone with a yard...
  • oooo....brooklyn doggie playgroup = good! i, of course, do not have a yard. :( actually, it would be good - the little guy was pretty badly attacked by a pit bull about 9 months ago and since then he has had some fear issues with bigger dogs - so we are working on that...but any good, group interactions are good therapy for him - count us in!

oh, yeah, he's a wirehair little bugger all right, and he KNOWS he is cute. he's 2+ and is also known for rough playing too...boys!

    so, who has a yard?!
