  • give us an address or at least a block.
  • Just to be on the safe side I deleted the link to the property listing that meheremc provided to avoid divulging any specific personal info about where they will be staying.

***edited to add: map deleted at the OP's request
  • Compared to Ireland I think Bed Stuy is probably a gay mecca. (tongue only halfway in cheek)

I guess it depends on whose cheek your tongue is in!

  • Ha, I think some of the regulars here are just having some fun keeping you company until someone from around that block replies.
  • I'm bumping this thread because I helped derail it. Doesn't anybody know this block?
  • In an effort to be helpful I changed the title of the thread to be more specific and hopefully more attractive to comments. We'll see...
  • Subject: Is it safe

on Vernon between Throop and Tompkins? I grew up around the block on Myrtle between Throop and Tompkins. A very long time ago. We moved out in the early 1950's along with everyone else. Many who stayed or delayed were carried out. Myrtle Avenue is Projects Canyon. You have to find out the violent crime news in the area. The Real Estate or Business interests will not tell you and the police are also somewhat Public Relations.

There is a public swimming pool in Tompkins Park or whatever it is called now.
  • I don't know anything about that specific block, but in general, crime remains a concern in Bed Stuy. I believe that you and your friends might stand out for several reasons, including being gay. The neighborhood does have some nice little enclaves, but it also has a fair amount of poverty and crime.
It sounds like you are not very familiar with Brooklyn (understandable, since you are from Ireland) and unfortunately, there are people who might try to take advantage of that.
Are you and your friends coming here for vacation ? If you want to visit nyc, go to bars, and be right near the "party" Bed Stuy seems, quite frankly, like a bad choice. I have a feeling that you might be happier in Williamsburg or Greenpoint.

  • I read online of bullets flying around in the projects on Myrtle; people shot/killed in the area. The area is mostly Black and Hispanic. Enjoy your summer elsewhere. Myrtle Avenue is sometimes referred to as Murder Avenue and a lot is not reported. I keep in touch for old times sake.
  • hmm, well thanks to every1 for all the help, but from chating to ppl that live there, they say it has a bad rap from the way it was a decade ago and has cleaned up lts, and its so close to border of williamsburg i think it will be ok for us, for the summer, ill just have 2 put my tough face on walking down the street, thanks guys
  • Ok, best of luck. The summer is a long way off, and if you were to change your mind, you have plenty of time to find a different house.

Just one more piece of advice, don't ask the locals where you can find some good craic, it means something quite different around there ! :D
  • Bingo, that's the right choice, merehemc. It's not easy being gay anywhere (and certainly not in Ireland was my original point!), and common sense precautions are more in order in Bed Stuy than say, Park Slope. But bashings happen everywhere, and no ethnic or class group has a monopoly on hate.

I wouldn't walk down the street holding hands, but I wouldn't be secretive about my identity with people I get to know either. That's how I walk that particular line, anyway.
