although the guys above aren't the most masculine, our biker seems to pick only females. maybe these women with ipods will be better...

P.S. There seems to be a limited number of photos of women with iphones online; most were NSF! -
whynot_31 wrote: I think we first need to agree not to yell at him unless he's about pounce on a victim.
Exactly.
...the point is to get him caught by the police and/or prevent an assault.
The point is not to simply to scare him into moving his routine to a different location.
So, the approach Jeffrey took seems like a good one. ...a photo for the cops wherein the identity could be confirmed by an actual victim (not just Jeffrey) would be excellent.
Although I personally haven't been hit by this guy, I know 3 separate people who have been either robbed or nearly robbed by him.
Enough is enough. -
Hey Jeffery - just want to say thank you for taking the time to follow this guy around last night. I live on Vandy between Park and Sterling and it makes me feel good to know that there's a neighborhood watch out there.
-
onandon, credit goes to those early in this thread that provided good examples that were easy to follow.
I'd hope that others might verrry carefully step in and lend a hand ( or eyes and ears) in the manner whynot describes above the next time someone posts that he's back.
It may very well be up to us to properly ( and safely) tee this up for the police and keep others out of harm's way if this guy continues to make a habit and/or business of this. -
I propose a neighborhood watch from the window of Soda or any other nearby bar with large windows.
-
Speaking of which, did you know that Antonio's serves an excellent stuffed meat slice? When combined with a can of diet coke, it is only $4.50. (I'm sure the diet coke eliminates all of the calories from the 850 calorie slice...).
Anyway, it's a fine walk. One can walk Park Pl, from (say) Washington Ave all the way to Flatbush Ave. Even if one walks slowly, it takes about 20 min. each way and about 10 min to eat the pizza.
If you were walk between 7:00 and 8:00 today, you would have seen:
1. Lots of Pizza delivery guys on bikes.
2. A building with its christmas lights still on.
3. NYPD car 4161 slowly driving around the area, over and over, looking around very intently.
C'mon specific guy on bike, we know you are out there... -
I know that a lot of us can be critical of the NYPD, but it's really nice to see that the 77th is taking this seriously and is out there.
And, I wonder how many times I would need to walk Park Place to burn off the calories from the above-mentioned meat slice. -
Bkchickie, just drink a diet coke with it. (this humor stems from a stint working fast food as a teenager, when a repeat customer would order TWO combo meals, insisting that we give him a diet coke: "make sure its diet!")
If you were to take the above walk (say, between 10 and 10:45) because you were bored out of your mind b/c Mrs. Whynot was away you have seen:
1. (see above).
2. (see above).
3. See above, except substitute car 2746. And note that they seem to be focusing on alleys and driveways along Park Place between Vandy and Underhill.
Friendly note to NYPD: Given your limited resources and the thiefs consistent pattern, perhaps you could enlist the help of the delivery guys of the Bklyn Pizza Factory. Located on Vandy near Park Pl, they are ALWAYS on bikes throughout the local neighborhood and would probably be willing to call you if they saw the guy. Just a thought.
...their pizza is good, but I was in the mood for Antonio's tonight. -
It occurred to me in the last week or so that this guy might not be out on "social" nights like Fridays, weekends etc. and instead may prefer the 7pm-9pm "after dinner" shift on school nights when he apparently has nothing better to do.
Glad to hear the police are out there tonight, but let's see if there's any additional pattern here:
For those of you that have experiences seeing him,
what night of the week was it?
I'll go first: last night was a Thursday. -
antonio's stuffed veggie slice is quite good, too, extra-reheated, for those who require such options. tho i can't imagine negotiating it, my camera, and any sort of forward progress of my feet, while also looking for perp and posting on brooklynian. forget about taking the canine. we should all keep up the public ed campaign! i walk this stretch at least 6 times a day at various pre-dawn, daytime, and evening hours. and there are always more young women on their phones than any other demographic. he picked a verdant corner. thanks to all who are looking out for us!!
-
Hm. Looking at the thread, the days of the week mentioned in this thread are as follows:
shmig's experience: a Monday.
ParadeRest also mentions a Tuesday
Extreme mentioned a Wednesday
My experience: a Thursday
yesnomaybe and bobbybrummel mentioned a Friday
Kind of all over the place. Worth a thought, anyway. -
Jeffrey- Jan 7th was also a Thursday. http://www.brooklynpaper.com/stories/33/3/33_03_gk_78_blotter.html
Mods- this thread is worth sticky-ing.
ParadeRest and KWAC- can we get some info re: the kid's favorite days and times? If you get him, can you get us a perp walk?
...say Hi to the cops who had cars 2746 and 4161. -
ok .. so this is what we need to do .. some shit like bait car .. 1 of you .. (no names) needs to cross dress and walk down the block i'll follow on the far side whyfi will be on your side and we will document the event and im sure our friend will strike because you _____ "the cross dresser" will be a sight/target he cannot pass up.
then we beat/document his capture and go have drinks at soda
(then you will remove your "cross dressing" outfit unless you want to stay in character ! -
Ian LOL!
-
This is a great idea, because then the cops can get him on a hate crime (assaulting a transgender person) rather than just on robbery. Hate crimes always have much longer prison sentences.
-
I'd do it but my legs are too hairy.
-
We'll get a local salon to donate a waxing to the cause.
-
Although theseideas warrant furthur consideration, I fear our biker may avoid the area due to increased police presence. ...you know the system is messed when in response to crime we sentance the police to sit in a dorky three wheeled scooter on the block. Clearly a case of wrongful imprisonment
-
Has anyone taken a photo/video? Glad I am an old woman...and not a girl. Guess I'm off limits....
-
Has the guy stayed pretty true to Park Place, or is he starting to wander up to GAP? The reason I ask is that I saw a cop standing on patrol at the corner of Vanderbilt & Plaza this afternoon about 4.
And, by the way, I'm still impressed with the police presence I've seen in the hood over the past week. -
Two cops outside of the dry cleaners on Vandy and Park tonight. I applaud the preventive measure. However, I'd rather see some stealthy police work in hopes of catching the guy.
-
My 9 - 10 PM walk was uneventful.
1. No good, clean lumber being discarded, despite it being trash night.
2. No bike guy along PP between Underhill and Flatbush, or along Sterling between Underhill and Flatbush.
3. Lots of single women on cell phones... -
As Jeffery writes on a possibly related thread:
We might have a pattern....
-------------------------------------------------------------
A bike thief attacking women using phones, sometimes wearing grey jacket with red sleeves or details, sometimes wearing black jacket with faded RWDC letters and insignia on the back, and sometimes changing between tall red mountain bike and low silver bmx bike.
Written another way:
attacker: single black male 16-20yo on a bike attacking women using phones, especially iPhones
location: area bounded by Flatbush, Underhill, GAP and St. Marks, often using Vanderbilt or the 7th Ave Park Place subway station as central areas for finding victims.
time of day:
- 7pm-10pm for the majority of attacks and sightings
- also attacked around 1:30pm one day as reported in Brooklyn Papers
possible attire:
- grey jacket with red sleeves or just red details
....or
- black jacket with faded RWDC letters and insignia on the back
- also seen wearing dark jeans and black boots
possible bikes used:
- tall red mountain bike
....or
- low silver bmx bike
typical behavior:
- attacker usually looks for women using iphones or other mobile phones
- attacker often stalks potential victims in full view of others present on sidewalk
- attacker usually rides bike very slowly on the sidewalk about 15-20 feet behind potential victims, observing and waiting for right moment to corner and attack on bike regardless of presence of other pedestrians nearby
- occasionally sets bike down under cars, may attack on foot
- will return to the scene to continue to stalk new victims within mere minutes of the police searching area for him
***if these attacks are related...
- attacker may escalate attack to physical/sexual assault if attack is resisted (a source of even more serious concern)
_____________________________________________________________________
As a result of my walks and thoughts, I add the following:
Bikers in our neighborhood seem to come in two varieties.
Variety 1.
Those delivering food. They can be easily spotted b/c they usually have no helmet, and their bike frequently has a food rack on it. The ridrs are often Chinese or Spanish. They ride quickly, and have a destination in mind.
Variety 2.
Those who are primarily transporting themselves, not food.
They tend to have helmets and bike lights. ...often bookbags. They ride quickly, and have a destination in mind.
So, do you see young Af-Am bike rider meeting Jeffery's description who seems to be just slowly riding around or mostly hanging out?
Is he alone?
Does he have no helmet?
...you get extra points if he is wearing the RWDC jacket.
...even more points if he is slowly riding near women walking home from the 7th Ave subway station.
...and extra bonus points if he has a low BMX bike or a red mountain bike.
I'll let you decide how many points you think you need before you should call the police.
KWAC and Paraderest I'd love to hear your thoughts. At this point, I have the feeling a lot of people are looking around. (this thread has over 6000 hits)
When do you want to hear from us?
I don't want people to call the police for no reason, but certainly don't want them to NOT call the police b/c I've suggested criteria that is too strict. -
Today's update:
While waiting to eat a massive burrito at Maya on Vandy I had the following conversation with a cop who had just gotten out of a Operation Impact van (it that had been slowly cruising Vandy and the surrounding area), and come in to Maya.
Whynot: You guys still looking for the guy on the bike?
Cop: Yea, he's a ghost.
Whynot: He's still doing it?
Cop: Yea, he got another person last night.
Whynot: He's gotta live local.
Cop: yea, that's what we figure too. He appears and disappears too fast. He has to be working out of some location central to here.
Whynot: yea, I see you guys everywhere looking for him. A lot of others are looking for him too.
....and then I ate my burrito.
KEEP LOOKING AROUND NEIGHBORS! ...THIS GUY IS CLEARLY STILL ACTIVE AND NOT AFRAID OF DOING THIS OVER AND OVER IN THE SAME LOCATION.. -
good to see you out on patrol tonight sir ^^^^^^^

If I see him, I'm deliberately taking out my phone. I hope that fucker gives me an excuse to shank him!
Howdy, Stranger!
