WARNING - SEXUAL ASSAULT ON PROSPECT PL VANDERBILT
At approximately 9:30pm Saturday night I was walking on Prospect Pl towards Vanderbilt, about 3/4 of a block from Vanderbilt. I saw a young man standing in the street, and then I heard footsteps behind me and caught a glimpse of something out of the corner of my eye. I had just enough time to pull my purse towards me and put an elbow out, but he slammed his hand against my butt and slid it between my legs. I screamed and he ran away. I don't think he could have been any older than about 30, and was under 5'10", but I did not get a very good look.
Please be careful! If I had been wearing headphones, I would not have heard him coming and definitely would not have had enough time to react. If anyone knows any other forums where I can post a warning to others in the area, please let me know. I have no idea if this was someone doing it for the thrill or if he wanted more, but my screaming sent him away.

Wow- that sucks. Sorry that happened to you. I was assaulted once on a crowded train a few years back- it's an extremely humiliating experience when someone treats your body like a piece of meat. Too bad he was too chicken shit for you to get a good look at him.

damn that fuckin sucks.. sorry to hear that shit..
was dude blk/wht/spanish ??
did you file a report? -
he is black. i also should mention that there were other people about a block or so away, crossing vanderbilt towards me, and a few people driving down the street, but no one did anything or seemed aware of what was going on.
i didn't file a report...there wasn't anything to report, since he didn't steal anything or physically injure me.
the most important thing i want to convey, especially to other women, is to be aware of your surroundings. unfortunately, this person will probably do something like this again, or worse. -
You can file a Police report for Forcible Touching.

Did he have a jacket on like the one described here

?
...please file a report. His attack was really brazen, and he'll likely do it again. If the police can document a pattern they'll have a better shot at catching him. -
Folks, out of respect for the OP and what she has been through I'm going to move all the off-topic stuff out of the thread (and anything else from here forward that may serve to diminish her reasons for posting this thread, or serve to tempt others to do so).
Thx
***edited to add:
Okay folks, I deleted all of the off-topic posts and also edited the line of questioning in ian's post above that was subject to so much controversy in an attempt to adhere to what he was really going for, which may end up being helpful info in avoiding and/or catching the attacker.
Thanks for your patience with all this, and sorry to hear this happened to the original poster. -
i'm not sure if he was wearing a jacket like that...maybe? i recall it being gray with some red, rather than black, and i did not see a bike. however, i did have my phone out a few moments before he ran up behind me. i glanced up from my phone and saw a person standing between two cars in the street a little bit ahead of me, but i didn't think anything of it and after sending the text i was writing, put it back in my pocket.
i am going to file a police report, even though it is belated.
thanks everyone for your comments/concern. -
Sorry that this happened to you and glad you are physically ok.
This almost happened on St. Marks last night. There was a woman sitting on one of the tree rails outside the school talking on her phone. Guy on a red bike, black ski had and gray jacket with red sleeves put his bike down and started to walk up behind this woman. Another person I know saw this and started walking faster toward them. Guy turned around and got back on his bike quickly and took off toward Vanderbilt.
I will make sure the person who saw what happened last night call the precinct and report this also Hashbrown. -
The more I read these reports the more I wonder if whynot's right, if these attacks are related.
For example, one bike thief attacking women using phones, sometimes wearing grey jacket with red sleeves or details, sometimes wearing black jacket with faded RWDC letters and insignia on the back, and sometimes changing between tall red mountain bike and low silver bmx bike.
Written another way, for example:
attacker: single black male 16-20yo on a bike attacking women using phones, especially iPhones
location: area bounded by Flatbush, Underhill, GAP and St. Marks, often using Vanderbilt or the 7th Ave Park Place subway station as central areas for finding victims.
time of day:
- 7pm-10pm for the majority of attacks and sightings
- also attacked around 1:30pm one day as reported in Brooklyn Papers
possible attire:
- grey jacket with red sleeves or just red details
....or
- black jacket with faded RWDC letters and insignia on the back
- also seen wearing dark jeans and black boots
possible bikes used:
- tall red mountain bike
....or
- low silver bmx bike
typical behavior:
- attacker usually looks for women using iphones or other mobile phones
- attacker often stalks potential victims in full view of others present on sidewalk
- attacker usually rides bike very slowly on the sidewalk about 15-20 feet behind potential victims, observing and waiting for right moment to corner and attack on bike regardless of presence of other pedestrians nearby
- occasionally sets bike down under cars, may attack on foot
- will return to the scene to continue to stalk new victims within mere minutes of the police searching area for him
***if these attacks are related...
- attacker may escalate attack to physical/sexual assault if attack is resisted
(a source of even more serious concern) -
to the OP- I am so sorry and I hope you are doing ok.
To the MOD- Jeffrey- thank you for taking down the post. -
