Sub Letting from summer in Brooklyn — Brooklynian

Sub Letting from summer in Brooklyn

Hey, I am from Ireland and myself and a friend are going to New York for the summer. We are hoping to live in Brooklyn somewhere like Williamsburg, Green point, Forth Green. Basically a good neighbourhood that has lots of young people.

Anyway being students we are pretty broke so we are looking for somewhere cheap as possible. We are not looking for anything fancy, in fact not by a long shot and would happily share a one bedroom place and just get an extra mattress or something. We are both 23 and responsible so we are not going to wreck a place and would adhere to any ground rules. The main thing is location and we just want to be close to the fun and meet lots of nice people.

So, realistically, what would we be expecting to pay per month between us for somewhere like I described around Brooklyn? I intend on using craigslist once we arrive in June but for now I thought I would just try and get an idea from people who actually live around Brooklyn. Would much appreciate any feedback or advice,
Thanks :)

You've probably discovered this already, but you can get a good general idea of rents by using craigslist.com.

Do not accept CL as 100 percent accurate, however, because of scammers or bait-and-switch brokers. Also, I understand from reading these boards and other sources you must never deal with anyone who says he or she is a landlord out of the country or leaving right away.

Also, remember that the rental market is very competitive now and you might be able to negotiate with landlords.

    Good luck and have fun!
  • Thanks for the replies. Can you give me a rough idea though off the top of your head how much would be reasonable for a 2 person place in Brooklyn. I'm sorry if this is very vague as I am sure neighbourhoods vary in rent prices. But, for somewhere not very fancy and sort of student type accommodation is what we will be looking for. As I said in the OP, the neighbourhood is the important thing and the accommodation just has to be liveable for the 3 or 4 months we are there.
    Thanks
  • You are looking for a 3 month(ish) sublet, which is a different market than an apartment where you sign a renewable lease.

...for one thing, you can't really book them too far in advance.
I'd actually try sites like this one
    http://www.sublet.com/area_rentals/newyork-brooklyn/prospectheights_rentals.asp

If you are are only going to be here 3 months, I'd pick something mid range. ...as you wrote, there's no need be in a lovely apartment if you are just going to use it to sleep. ...hopefully you will spend most of your time out in NYC and not even bother to hook up cable TV or a landline phone.
