Current Wife doesn't want me talking to you.
If you want advice on how to spend entirely too much money on photography related equipment, feel free to ask!
Hey Anthony- why do you call her your "current" wife....like there was a past wife and there's going to be a future wife...?
-
Before we were married she was Future Wife. Now that we're hitched she's Current Wife. No plans on any new Future Wife (unless Eliza Dushku starts returning my calls).

Oh God, you too?!?! My husband is totally in love with her. Are you also a fan of Dollhouse? -

I upgraded to the D90 a couple of months ago and I'm really loving it! The low noise in low light is unbelievable.
Read the manual. I had a D80 before so controls are very similar, but I kept the manual for the 80 with me whenever I had the camera for quite a while so I could look up stuff. Using them isn't very intuitive, but once you learn it, it's pretty easy to remember.
I could also go on and on about accessories. First off, if you didn't get a UV filter for your lens, get one. It is a great protector of your lens. I don't think that filter affects my shots, but it has kept me from loosing at least one lens. An incident occurred and the filter was shattered, but the lens was safe. Plus if you need to really clean it (say after a windy day at a beach), just take it off and wash it well with some soap and water. -
^^^ not a big fan of filters (other than circular polarizers) but not deathly against them, either. I prefer lens hoods - better contrast through reduced flare and adds a level of physical protection for the front element (not against sand, as OQ pointed out, though).
If you do pick up a lens or two that makes the ol' camera bag a little more expensive to replace, talk to your insurance agent to have it all tacked on to the home owners/renters insurance. It's really cheap if you're not making any money from from photography (ie, you're not a professional/commercial photographer). -
oh, I like a polarizer!
I think the UV filter is especially useful for someone new to SLR, who may not have honed their protective nature of the camera at all times. It's also good if you usual on the off chance you really want to get a shot, but your lens [filter] is dirty or smudged and you don't have appropriate cleaning bit--just screw the filter off to shoot with your very clean lens.
Hoods are great but I find myself in a lot of situations (usually outside) where I want to pop the lens cap on often and a hood typically prevents this (are there more hoods out there that let you put the cap on?).
back on topic:
Rave: fluffy snow instead of rain for our 2 hour walk this morning in the park.
Rant: it warmed up just enough to still be super cold, yet melt snow and ice and leave us with mud. -

Okay, we'll keep it on topic -
RAVE: Center pinch lens caps -
They allow you to get your fingers in to even tight hoods. That being said, I never have my lens cap on when I'm outside, which is why I like hoods.
Hood width and depth varies with each lens. Basically, at the widest field of view of the lens, the hood should be just small enough to not darken the corners of the frame, so telephoto lenses have deeper hoods, wide angle lenses wider, shallower hoods. -

I'd rather there were more episodes of Firefly. -
Rant: holy crapsticks it's cold outside.
Rant: toys in the park. Toys and kids don't belong in large groups of dogs. -
Rave: It's Delusional Week on Facebook!
Rant: holy crapsticks it's cold outside (I couldn't say it any better than OQ) -
Rave: home for the night under warm blankets.

You look more like him than some of the other "leaps of imagination" I saw -
Rave: pumpkin bread
Rant: can't stop eating the pumpkin bread -
Rant - Kitties with white hair who must lay on ALL my black clothes

clearly the answer is for you to dress in all white all the time
Rave - MY KITTIES :cat:
Rant: not enough pictures of Stacey's kittehs -
Rant - Cat #1 throws up breakfast immediately after eating.
Rave - Cat #2 eats partially digested food before I can get to it. Gross, but cuts out 80% of the clean up effort
Rant - Cat #2, stuffed to the gills, then throws ups, producing one great big pile of cat food puke. -

^ cat #1 needs to eat that vomit FTW!

Jackson has an eating disorder. He doesn't like to chew his food, so he pukes it right back up sometimes....but at least neither of them eats it again -
Rave: I just yawned and the kitty next to me on the couch yawned right after me. It's the little things in life :sunny:
-
Rave: no vomit was exchanged
-
Rave: on a related note, I recently had occasion to see this again:

Hah, totally forgot what a foul-mouthed bunch of little buggers they were, for their age. First coupl'a minutes had my jaw open, didn't remember that part. Sprinkled liberally throughout the rest of the film as well, mostly just variations on the s word. (yes, shit lol).
Good times. -
Rant: Bought a bunch of rock salt for the storm. Hauled-ass home to get a nice coat of it along the front sidewalk, front steps and down the driveway before the 12 hours of snow was supposed to hit around 7pm. Went through about ten bucks (50 or 60 pounds) of the stuff.
So uh...
WHERE THE HELL IS IT?
Rave: With all the rock salt I put down, it now looks like it snowed just on my part of the sidewalk.
:-k #-o -
I hear ya, where the hell is all the damn snow!?!?
-
who are all of these people who run to Home Depot and Lowe's and buy out all of the shovels? Do shovels wear out? Is it a surprise that snow is going to happen in the winter? My house has a shovel that is kept by the front door. It's probably 25 years old.
