Safety/Noise levels on St. John's Pl btwn Washington/Classon
Subject: Safety/Noise levels on St. John's Pl btwn Washington/Classon
Hi all - can any of you give me a read on this block? I felt totally comfortable when I was there recently. But its so freezing out right now, I couldn't get a true read on the vibe of the neighborhood. No one is really outside and people have their windows closed. Can you fill me in? I'll come home alone some nights and want to know if it's safe (mid thirties female). I'm considering an apartment there. I've lived in all kinds of neighborhoods and am no princess - but don;t feel like dealing with a lot of stress from a too-hectic area.Thoughts?
Thanks!

This area is just over the much discussed border of PH, and is CH.
That said, my only comments about that corner (Classon and St. Johns) is that it contains a very loud church. ....the bodega/deli serves food that is edible.
The Washington Ave end of that block is far noisier. -
Is this the stretch of the block with the fire house or is that Lincoln?
-
That block is LOUD in the summertime. About one Saturday a month, someone sets up a massive DJ party in one of the backyards and plays obnoxiously loud music until 4am. Also on St. John's, last year there was a double murder at the block party between Washington and Underhill. It's definitely not the best block you'll come across.

ahahahhaha
come on down to tha hood homegrl ..
J B = talkin the truth ! -
It's the stretch with the firehouse.

I'm a mid 30's female who happens to live right on the corner of St. Johns & Classon.
It can indeed be a bit loud when it warms up outside. I viewed (& subsequently rented) my apartment in the colder months & wasn't expecting it to be quite so lively. Between the dancehall & the sirens...some nights aren't exactly peaceful. Good news is...my bedroom doesn't face the street. If yours would...it's something to consider.
I've never felt unsafe. I think the comment regarding the block party murder may be a bit misleading to a potential new inhabitant of the area. Didn't we discover (on this board) that it was drug related? I thought so? No offense, Jay B. I just feel like it could have happened anywhere.
Anywhere there are drug dealers/buyers, that is. Just sayin'.
Regardless...I've been here for about a year. I've never had a problem.
That said, I lived in Carroll Gardens for years before I moved here. It has been a major adjustment. I'm still learning to love it. Some days are better than others. Be smart. SCOUR this board for info. These guys are hilarious, awesome, snarky as all hell & chock full of extremely useful info. Be smart when you walk
the streets at night. No electronics in plain view. Always be aware of your surroundings. All the big city basics.

I looked at that apartment complex across the street. Nicely renovated, but just as I was about to agree to a lease that fire truck came speeding out of there.
Unless that station is closed, I say no way. -
It feels like a pretty safe block in part due to the presence of the firehouse. It's no surprise that trucks would sometimes have sirens on when they leave, but the bell that rings whenever the garage door is opening and closing can be incredibly annoying.
-
All helpful info. So far it sounds completely horrible.
let's see...
murder
late night outdoor DJ parties
a LOUD church
don't call it PH it's actually CH
Firehouse bells/sirens
aye aye ay
I'm not sure the fact that the bedroom faces the back is enough to cancel all of this out.
Such a bummer.

I think Franklin Park & Abigail's also make me feel a bit more safe. Lots of people coming & going.
Ya know, Hallie, maybe this just isn't the block for you. It takes time to find the right fit. I spent MONTHS searching for a new place when I decided to move to CH. And I've lived in Brooklyn for years. Not every hood is for every dude.
Good luck! -

It's tough because I too have lived around Brooklyn and really want to make this apartment happen since it's so close to so many of my friends in PH and would be really easy to get to work. I guess the thing is - that even though I've lived in dirty/noisy neighborhoods, I haven't lived anywhere where people said it wasn't safe to use a cellphone etc.

Still thinking it over - just less thrilled than before I asked.
Can I ask you two more questions please?
1. Assuming your screenname means you have a dog. Do you walk the dog at night?
2. Experience/thoughts on train at night.
Thanks! -
Subject: St. Johns etc
Hallie,
I live on the stretch your talking about, I've been in the same apartment for just shy of four years here. I would tend to agree with Puppymom that this area may not be what you're looking for. This is a great neighborhood, but it's not Park Slope or Boreum Hill.....that being said this is a low to mid income neighborhood and flashing around something like a cellphone (especially an iPhone) is a signal to young kids "Hey I have disposable income come steal this status symbol and make some calls". Then again, anything can happen anywhere. Franklin Ave has a lot of drug dealing, some blocks more than others but if you're friendly, polite and don't mind getting hollered sometimes you'll be fine.
Is it noisy? Yes. Is it bothersome? For some people...I'm from Nassau County, I grew up in a pretty dense and noisy area so I don't notice it. I like the fire truck, my apartment's heater blew up-they were in here in like 3 seconds. There's also some pretty regular fights, kids playing, etc all hours of the night during the summer, but hey its Brooklyn!
Honestly, the most annoying thing are the drunk college students spilling out of Franklin Park saturday night shouting semi-incoherently: "Like oh my god, like no way, like do you like MGMT? Look at my cool tattoo, it means something." I love Franklin Ave is a good blog to check out more about the areas local history and recent developments. -
I've lived on that block for 13 years. It is loud, but not nearly as loud as it used to be! A lot of people hang out outside in the summer, and there is a bus route on St. Johns so a lot of buses going by, and the firetrucks do go in and out with sirens on quite a bit. I would not still be there if my apt faced the street.
Facing the back, it is usually very quiet... except when it's not. The backyard dj parties don't happen as much as they used to on this block, I think now they are more frequent on the other side of Washington. Depending on how close you are to Washington, and if you're on the north side of St. Johns, you may hear noise from the Prospect Pond bar on Washington (though they supposedly soundproofed the backdoor and it hasn't been too bad, but previous bars in that space opened the door and let people outside so if that starts to happen in warmer weather the noise will be awful). The building right next door to Prospect Pond on Washington used to be a party rental space, and it often had very loud parties that spilled out into the backyard. I see it has a for sale sign right now. If it is sold and the ground floor becomes a bar or restaurant with outdoor seating, the noise will be bad. Otherwise, it's very quiet in the back, not a lot of people use their yards, the activity is all out on the street.
If you're thinking of moving into one of the two big buildings that take up the entire south side of the block, I think you probably won't feel comfortable. If you move into a smaller building on the north side, well... depends on you. It is definitely not Park Slope. Washington and St. Johns has traditionally been a very active drug dealing corner. Recently not as much, but they move around so eventually they'll be back. Washington has a lot of foot traffic, so walking to/from the subway at Eastern Parkway is totally fine.
I've walked all over the neighborhood for years, at all hours of the day and night, and I have never felt unsafe or threatened in any way. But you can't be oblivious, walking around blabbing on an iPhone and not paying attention to your surroundings. I would think that's just common sense... but apparently it's not. If you're confident, have some street smarts, and are respectful, it's a great place to live. If you want a neighborhood like Park Slope or Carroll Gardens, this is not the block for you. -
I do have a dog. I walk him for the last time at around midnight & honestly...most nights it's pretty dead by then. Never felt threatened at all.
The subway seems alright to me. I tend to take cabs home from bars (when I can afford it, anyway) if it's too late. I did the same when I lived in CG.
I agree with most of what the other guys are saying. It's not Park Slope or Carroll Gardens. But you sound Brooklyn-saavy enough to know that. If it were me, I'd have another walk or two around the area (at night, maybe) and go with my gut. Hope it works out!

two tips to offer re: this block
1. Think twice and then rethink again if the rental is in a Martin building.
2. Firehouse has a fireplace structure in the back and smoke could be an issue for apartments in the backs of buildings, depending on wind conditions. -
you know...people on the streets and open businesses between the hours of 7p-12am on aves like franklin and bedford and rogers and nostrand (in the summer and winter) actually make the streets safer than not.
-
Just wanted to thank everyone - SUCH good info.
Flo - how can I find out if it is a Martin building?
Clayfilms - I totally agree.
Puppymom - thanks for answering - the late night dog walk is always a possibility. -
Martin owns/runs at least two buildings on the block. Offices are on Franklin, between Lincoln and Eastern Parkway. Not sure if other realtors in the area will show his buildings or apts. If you do a search on this website, you'll find that others have had negative experiences with him as well.

building is on the bedbug registry.
final red flag!
Thanks everyone - you were such a great resource! -
there are tons of apts (within brownstones) for rent a little further east on lincoln place

I am trying to get my deposit back from martin. He sucks and has forced me to take him to small claims court..
Don't rent from him, Anyone. This is a nightmare, and has been for over a year now. -
Good luck Althea. I hope you prevail.

I lived in a Martin building for 2 years -- it was DISGUSTING. more mice, roaches, and other lovely bugs than I could count. The water would go out for days at a time, no heat for weeks at a time...gross.

I helped a woman downstairs from me try to drop off her check once (a fun game he liked to play was "not be in the office and then call screaming that rent was late because he wasnt in his office to get it") and he CLOSED THE SECURITY GATE on her head. I called the police, but by the time they arrived he had driven off.
That said, sorry to hear about getting your $$ back -- I went to get my security deposit back and he handed me a check without asking for anything except my keys. Never went to look at the apartment, etc.
In regards to if other people show his apartments, I doubt it - but he lists on rent-direct.com which charges a fee to look at apartments.
