Extell may sell a portion of the space 2 Ratner 4 Arena

I heard it this morning on NPR, anyone else?

At first I found it upsetting but it's a great wrench in the works for Markowitz and other sellouts who have been pushing for the development because "It brings back sports to Brooklyn". I guess we'll have to see how it all plays out, and I doubt it'll get boring.

  • Man, I was just coming to post that!

    Here's the blurb from Curbed:
Perhaps feeling the tides align against them—we all know that Mayor Bloomberg and Governor Pataki don't want to go 0-for-2 on New York City stadium deals this year—Gary Barnett's Extell Development said that if they win the bid for the Brooklyn railyards they would resell a portion of the land back to modest publisher Bruce Ratner so he can build his little arena, but not, you know, that whole insta-skyline thingamajig. If Extell did this, they would be trimming one-third of the apartments from their tastefully-done development plan. Ratner, and we're paraphrasing here, was all like "I ain't havin' that." The MTA may vote on the proposals tomorrow morning. Duh, we'll keep you posted.
    And the Times article.

I don't really see how it throws a wrench into the plan so much. Sure, a lot of people are against the eminent domain portion, but there are more than a few against the total traffic nightmare sure to be around with a freaking stadium in the middle of overly congested Atlantic Ave. Plus what would something like that do to the neighborhood? Ever stroll around that nice area around MSG/Penn Station. It's sure beautiful around there. Doesn't really matter how many high rises they try to stick in the cracks.
  • I dont want an arena for more reasons than the traffic, I just think its interesting because

    1) Bloomberg and Markowitz who are so hard pressed for an stadium can't say that the Extell offer does not give that.

    2) Ratner and all his second reate conies now still have the option to build the arena and "all the glorious hot dog vending jobs it would create", because they are really concerned about the community and making things better.

    3) All of us here know Ratner wouldnt do it with Extell because the profit wasnt the stadium, it was just a huge smokescreen for all the other construction an subsidies (read: easy taxpayer money pocketed).

I just think Extell giving the option to Ratner was well played.
