There are different TYPES of gun permits. Premise, conceal carry, hunting, etc.
There are different levels of requirements for each different type. For example, one of the old rules for a conceal carry was a requirement for a person to be in regular possession of cash (excess of $5,000). For example, in cash (i.e., daily bank deposits from a cash business). Another was status as a peace officer or attorney.
Being Asian was not one of the criteria.
Before you check on the FBI stats as to who was killed (age, race, gender), please check on the stats of stolen guns (resulting homicides from the stolen legitimately owned guns) and homicides resulting from gun ownership (accidental child shootings, etc.). -
some how our city is 1 of the hardest to get a license to carry in .. but we have 1 of the highest # of illegal gun arrests !

...many folks argue that these two policies (hard to get a lic to buy guns, strict and agressive penalties against those decide to who carry them without a lic) is one reason NYC is among the safest cities in the country.
I'd be among them. -
oh i agree i HATE guns.. shit is wack.. i wish it was back in the 70's style when most ppl had a lil pocket knife or a switch blade.. and you just had to DUKE it out with the fear of a gun being pulled !!!

I like to look at the LA riots as a reminder to myself if things goes to hell the cops wouldn't be around to protect anyone at all.
I have members of my family kidnapped etc.. not immediate family but close enough. we live in two different worlds. crime affect us differently.
I been robbed more times than majority of this message board posters combined.
The gun would do a lot of difference in all my own circumstances. -
there are two groups that have guns, cops and criminals, both groups i don't trust.
cops that i have dealt with over the years are not that helpful, growing up poor that is. I always try to do the right thing, some how cops always are asses. like one tenant from along time ago left fire works in my dads garage. they came to pickup it as i called the precinct. the cop keep insisting the fire works were mine. i was like why would i bother calling you guys if it was mine. so after like 10 mins of questioning me. i said either take it or i'm dumping it in the garbage can and if anything happens i said to them you refused to take it. he took it and left.
criminals are worse. -
Even if you were granted a premises or residence permit for a handgun, there is almost no likelihood that you will be given a CCW permit to carry it on the street. Given that the NYPD is the agency responsible for issuing permits and you say you've had negative interactions with them, I wouldn't hold out much hope that they'll approve a permit.
In all likelihood a gun would give you a false sense of security because even highly trained law enforcement officers have trouble responding appropriately when confronted with an armed criminal. Case in point was the other day in Fairfield, NJ when Officer Gerald Veneziano was shot on his way to work. For a handgun to be of any use whatsoever for self defense you would need to undertake extensive training and do refreshers regularly. You would also need to buy a high quality firearm, expect to pay at least $1,000. Chances are if someone pulls a gun on you and you go for your gun, you'll be shot dead before you even get your hand on your gun.
You would be much better off undertaking a self-defense course that teaches how to recognize and avoid potentially violent situations. They might even teach you how to interact with law enforcement officials so that you are treated with respect.
