Any suggestions for a local place to just have some cheese (maybe some meat) and wine?

That's all I need some days to make me happy :D

I agree. My favorite place for that is actually in ft. greene at Stonehome Wine Bar. Great meat and cheese plate, wonderful service and they have a very cute outdoor patio.
  • Thanks, Mixergirl. I've been wanting to check that place out for a while.

    Still hoping for closer suggestions
  • Total Wine Bar on 5th + St Mark's
has a good selection of cheeses
and they make a killer mud bug dish too and some other appetizers
plus their wine selection is damned good too. youbetcha.
    **** stars

their mac & cheese is to die for.
  • My one and only experience at Total Wine Bar sucked!

The first selection of red wine by the glass - not available. Selection 2 - same deal. Finally had selection 3. Went to order 2nd serving of Selection 3 - out of it.

Went next door to Pepperoncino, ate a bit, came back to TWB and ordered another red. Went to refill - sold out.

After all of this and having about 3-4 glasses a piece, they didn't even buy us a drink. It wasn't busy and we were being extremely patient.
  • yes!
the mac and cheese is bootilicious!

perhaps there was some bad karma in the air
    give it another try
greg is one of the best bartenders in crooklyn. look out for him.

if not, tell one of the other barkeeps your story and
i'm sure they'll do right by you

Maybe they deserve another chance, but with only about 8 reds on the menu and half of them unavailable, I wrote a City Search review of "not-so-Total Wine Bar".

I would have been MUCH more understanding if there had been good service, an apology, a glass on the house.....SOMETHING!

I'm pretty patient about restaurants/bars working out the kinks as long as they are TRYING to do the right thing.

    I basically walked away unimpressed.

    Anybody have any other suggestions?

    weird.
i've been well over two dozen times in the past 2 years or so, and they've never been out of anything. always a great experience.
i do know there was a liquor/wine driver strike that lasted several weeks i think last summer/fall. many bars/restaurants were out of their usual stock...was it during this time?
  • Nope. It was in the beginning of the year - January, I think. They had already been open for a while (so it should not have been growing pains), weren't crowded and offered no real excuse or apology.

Too many other places competing for business to bother returning where they don't make an effort.
  • what'd you think of peperoncino?
  • Damn double posts!

Pepperoncino - eh. It was nothing special, but fair and we had decent service. I only went the one night that we left Total Wine Bar in search of more substantial food.

    I like Pepperoncino.

and I agree with quijibo - greg has bought me a bunch of drinks. I'm guessing you just got someone sullen on a bad day, or maybe the boss. :)
  • Well, if it was the boss, he should have known better. If it wasn't the boss and he reads about it, he should address it.

Damn, I'm getting hungry right now! Maybe it's time for me to start cooking some dinner as I don't think I have any meat and cheese in the house
  • ok. i got the place for you.
    it's an argentinian/italian bistro
    on 9th street between 4th + 5th ave
    futura bistro

    here's their website:
    http://www.futurabm.com

    good wines.
    lots of meat apps
    and cheese

but try the sangria out. it's a specialty
  • Ah, now there's another suggestion for a place I've been wanting to try! Thank you
  • de rien!
    their meat plates are good
but don't go near their salads
and try out the sardine appetizer :D
  • The Italian place around the corner from me (I forget the name) on Vanderbilt between Park and Prospect is really good. It's next to coffee shop. I'm talking first rate. The owner/chef makes this meat and cheese sampler that is wonderful. And, he has a great vino. I reccomend it big time.
  • I think I've been to that place on Vanderbilt. Is it called Osteria something? If so, yes, they do have good wine and cheese and meat. If I want to nitpick, I'd say I'd prefer some stinky/gooey cheese selections (all seemed to be hard/sharp when I went), but it was all good quality with good. friendly service and at a fair price.
  • You're a hard woman to please. I remember having some sharp tagglio and some soft, strong gorgonzolas and blues.
  • I'm probably one of those high-maintenance women who thinks they're low-maintenance

We're talking about the same place, right? Osteria something? It was pretty good - definitely attentive, friendly and prompt service and good quality food. This place passed the test :D

    no . you don't understand.
    she's chic

it's called aliseo. are you thinking of convivium osteria on 5th ave?

It's on Vanderbilt Ave by Park Place. Seats ten people at most. Has really nice atmosphere and offbeat Italian dishes like spelt lasagna and pulpo with polenta.
  • Nope, I meant the place you're talking about.

Full name: Aliseo Osteria del Borgo

I knew there was an Osteria in there somewhere!

    ahh, hah.

beast also has great cheese plate but I don't think they do meats.

half used to (before they changed menus and then closed) have fantastic meat and cheese plates.
  • I just walked down Vanderbilt today for the first time in a while. I was looking for Half and figured it closed. What's in its spot now?

I like Beast. Beast was good. I know I had good cheese there, can't recall any meat.

half is empty now. next door, though, is amorina, which is owned by albano, the same guy that owns aliseo. :)
  • I haven't tried it yet, but Flatbush Farm has a meat and cheese plate on the bar menu. No stinky or runny stuff though. The plate comes with Mimolette (a French hard orange cheese) and Manchego, along with a variety of cured meats. I'll probably get it next time I'm there (and not stuffed with delicious sushi), and I'll report back.
