FOUND A BLACK CAT on S. Portland near Atlantic!!! — Brooklynian

FOUND A BLACK CAT on S. Portland near Atlantic!!!

I found a very friendly but very hungry black cat on Monday, February 8th at 5:40pm on S. Portland between Atlantic and Hanson. I have her/him in a temporary home, but would love to find the owner, if there is one. Please let me know if you are looking for your black cat. S/he has some white on her chest, white paws, and has a marking on her/his nose.

  • I believe I am the person who stopped and gave you advice about the Humane Society. If you are unable to find the cat's human(s), PM me and I can get you in touch with others who can help. (If I have this right, you can't keep the cat because of an allergy issue in your household).

By the way she is a sweetheart!!
  • Live on that block, that cat is always out and about at all times of day and night. Pretty sure it is either a stray, or lives in a place nearby where the owners let it out often.

My guess is that it is a stray cat, judging by how much I see it on the street.
  • If you have a lot of strays/streetcats, I'd recommend going with a trap/spay or neuter/release program. I'd also recommend that anyone on the block who can care for a cat, adopt one or two!

I didn't see this one too closely, but I don't think her left ear was tipped, so if she's a stray she's probably not neutered and is having litters. She's pretty small, so if she's an adult that would make it even more likely she's a streetcat (malnutrition).
  • dancerjess,
as someone who ended up saving a cat (black too) before the winter storms and has severe allergies as well, God bless you for being so kind!! Tomorrow will be hellish and he/she will be soooo grateful for your kindness and heart.

Take a pic of the cat, post fliers and please scroll through and down to my and other peoples resources here!

Post in our pets board and craigslist! Poor kitty deserves a loving home.

They both literally asked to move in with me, and how could I say no?

(sorry I couldn't figure out how to embed photo)
mod note: let me help you with that...

  • Thanks for the replies. Hunter Gatherer- I believe you spoke to the woman with the child who lives on that block- I was half listening while I was calling a friend who has rescued a lot of cats in the past. I ended up taking the cat home for the night, and was able to find a temporary foster home in Park Slope. I can't keep her because I have an 11 year old cat and an allergic roommate who can only tolerate the one we have- that can even be difficult sometimes. I will put up fliers, but if no owner appears soon I'm going to get her checked out at the vet and then try to adopt her out. I know that no-kill shelters can have waiting lists that are months long, and I'm definitely not going to take her anywhere she would be put down. If any of you who have replied want to adopt her or know someone who might, please let me know! MFischel, how long have you been seeing her on the street?
My guess is that she has been a house cat at some point, she seemed too friendly and comfortable in my apartment to have grown up on the street- although she definitely hadn't eaten for awhile- she gobbled up a few plates of food immediately and drank an entire dish of water. Poor thing. I hope I can find her a good home soon, or maybe the nice person who is fostering her will fall for her and keep her!!!
  • Jess, I have seen that cat for at least over one year. Usually scares the hell out of me when she bounds out from behind the fence at the church, or crossing the street.
  • I do have a friend who may be looking for a cat, so if all else fails, once again please PM me.

But it seems like the issue on that block goes beyond one street cat. (correct me if I'm wrong). If that's the case, I really hope you and your neighbors can get together and work with the Humane Society on a trap/neuter or spay/release program; as well as finding homes for as many as possible. (They will also give the cats a thorough checkup at the same time.)

They do it for free or at low cost, but I always make a donation when I go :)
