hope everyone had a great valentines day. i spent my day babysitting one of my great nephews - Charlie - he's 11 mo. old and absolutely adorable. we had a lot of fun. my niece was upset because i didn't buy her anything because my 9 great nieces/nephews are now my priority (2 of the boys are her's!!) she doesn't think it's fair that the babies now take precedence!!
glad i have tomorrow off even though the day is packed with stuff to do - i'll need another day off to recouperate!!
500 tv channels and nothing to watch. think i'm going to read for awhile.

All the mentions about food and especially that it was a Brooklyn thing reminded me of my childhood. When I was a kid Cold Cuts were for special occasions like company coming for lunch, picinics, the beach outing etc:. When we wanted a quick lunch or a snack it was as follows. Ketchup & butter sandwiches, mustard & butter sandwiches, sliced bannana, sugar, & butter sandwiches. Tomato, mayo & butter sandwiches were big items in the summer. A Campbell beans & butter sandwich was special! You notice butter was on everything. Of course once WW2 started we had to use oleomargarine. The Parkay bag with the white lard looking stuff and a red spot which you pinched and then kept squeezing the package until it was all yellow. When my Mother let me do the squeezing I felt honored. I was the youngest and there was plenty of sibling rivalry going on. Very seldom use butter even today. Use one of the Healthy margarines. We did have good dinners every night and especially Sunday Dinner which was always a roast. Our house had an open door Sunday. My Mother never knew how many friends we would all bring home. She loved it. We used to get a whole Messing layer cake like the ones that the Deli's sold slices off. A big bag of rolls from the bakery topped off a great meal.

Goodmorning Everyone
Hi Warren ....wow...interesting that you said butter was on everything
I wonder if thats the reason we all have high cholesterol in this day!
Did you remember the Bakery on 15st above 5th ave....I cant believe
I forgot the name of it .....wait maybe Ebinger's. I also remember Larsen's
but not sure where they were.
The Loft's chocolate store next to Kresgee's
Daniel's Florist on 9st and 5th ave
I remember my Mom always making a steak for dinner during the week
and Roast Beef or Lasagna on Sundays .....they always included fresh
mashed potatoes and a vegetable with a salad.
Funny I just read this Meatless Monday from back in the day!
