You can reformat your hard drive really easily... I'm sure a google search would give you really simple instructions.

Lots of great resources for recycling, donating, reusing, all sorts of stuff. -
This is a great way to destroy the data on your hard drive. It's free and pretty easy to do.

then take it to any Goodwill for Recycling. They will take anything

If you have a drill just put a hole in the drive and toss the lot in the trash. Problem solved. Cost $0.

Yeah, I think the point was NOT to throw it in the trash and perhaps divert a bunch of heavy metals and other nasty things to a more appropriate place.
