Double Parking Decency — Brooklynian

Double Parking Decency

A simple question... Why can't those who double park their cars during street cleaning leave a phone number on their dashboard so those blocked in can get out if needed? I'm trapped on Plaza St until the end of street cleaning (or later, if they are slow in getting out) because people can't show this simple, common courtesy.

  • Because people are assholes. But you do have official license to fuck up their car if they park you in and don't leave a note.
  • I wouldn't jack up someone's car, but I do understand the desire to after being blocked in. I like the etiquette enforcement from the previous thread on this issue - that's the way it should be done!

It would be nice if everyone did that, but as someone who owns a car in NYC I understand that I'm probably not going to be able to move my car if it's blocked in and plan accordingly.
  • It used to be more common of a courtesy. years ago, everyone on my block, everyone, put their name and phone number in their window so if you were blocked in, you could call them. But this neighborhood has turned into a bunch of "me, me, me" people and no one really cares anymore about the other person, just for themselves.

it should be law to leave a note on your dash, it's not hard, I keep a note in my driver's side door panel and just stick it up there if I have to double for alternate. Takes 2 seconds out of my life.

Hopefully by carrying keys, razor blades and gap-filling glue!

I like your way of thinking

Nope. I just know that if I need my car, I don't park it where it will be blocked in.

    best ever -

My brother had a spot in a shared parking lot at an old job of his. Another company had given the spot next to him (which was also next to a riser) to their employee. The guy kept putting his car half in his spot, half in my brothers. After numerous complaints the guy kept doing it. So my brother took a tube of unscented white hair gel, applied it all over the door handles and window and left a note that said "You want to be a jerk-off, now I jerked off." The look on this guy's face after he read then note, then touched the door handle, was priceless.
  • ^that's awesome!

Umm... it's actually a law that you CAN'T DOUBLE PARK! Funny that...

What is with all the advice on here lately to destroy other people's cars? Really? Are we not adults? I'm as (or more) annoyed and frustrated as the next guy about awful driving and parking behavior in the neighborhood, but all the suggestions about criminal retribution (especially in the parking hog thread) seem pretty immature and pointless, and only serve to make the victims look stupider than the perpetrators. If someone cuts you in line at the deli, do you poison their coffee? If the newspaper guy gives you incorrect change, do you Sharpie his stack of magazines? How old are we?

In both of the other situations you mention, the people are there to be confronted directly. On the other hand, the entitled assholes who park people in without leaving a note intentionally make it impossible for you to directly address their behavior. These selfish people will only change that behavior when the consequences become severe enough. They clearly don't give a shit what anyone thinks. They only care about their property and convenience. Retribution is the only thing that gets through to them.

    A better analogy than yours:
If someone blocks the door to my apartment with a stack of Ming vases, you'd better believe I'm going to knock that shit down when I want to get out. If you want to protect your Ming vases, don't use them to block the way out of my apartment.

If you use a large valuable and unattended piece of portable property as your instrument of dickery, you shouldn't be surprised when it gets damaged.

Welcome to NY. Same people who scrape/damage your car and don't leave their details.

Yeah, that is true, but it is also a well known fact that double parking during alternate side days is tolerated/allowed as a courtesy because WTF else are you going to put your car during alternate? And, that is the only time I double park! Funny that yourself.....

No need for a welcome to NY to me, I have always been here :D. And, yes, my car has been hit while parked and people have just taken off.
  • Um, if I'm the offender here, and I come back to find my car vandalized in some way, I'm going to assume it's the guy I blocked in and retaliate myself, no?

If you vandalize the passenger side, chances are the driver won't notice until too late. That's been my experience. Of course I was driving a rental, so I didn't care anyway.

Also, if you double park and don't leave a note, chances are you parked in at least 2 people, unless your car was exactly aligned with the car next to it. Also cars get keyed all the time with no provocation at all. The owner would have to retaliate against at least one and possibly two innocent people. Possible yes, especially for the type of inconsiderate fuckwad who would do this in the first place, but also less likely.

If you want to be super-cautious, you can wait until after alternate side is over, since people tend to do this on their own block.
