“I Love My (NYC) Block” Grant for 23rd St.-UPDATED INFO

“I Love My (NYC) Block” Grant Information Sheet

Greetings! Based upon a grant application submitted to the Citizens Committee of NYC, we have received a block grant!

This is an informational flier to educate our fellow group members and neighbors about the proposal made by The Concerned Citizens of Greenwood Heights and the 23rd St. Neighbors Association (formed after a community meeting in June 2009) with the support of The Green-Wood Historic Fund (Green-Wood Cemetery’s not-for-profit arm).

The grant was awarded for beautification and education projects to take place this April or May, 2010 in the following areas:

23rd Street, from 5th Avenue to 7th Avenue
24th Street, from 5th Avenue to 6th Avenue
7th Avenue, from 23rd Street to 20th Street
6th Avenue, from 23rd Street to 24th Street

We need your help and want your input!

EDUCATION & BEAUTIFICATION IMPROVEMENT PROJECT, PHASE ONE:

The macro objectives of the project are: 1.) Increase awareness/education through a forum, signage and brochures; 2.) Clean-up and surveillance of existing trouble spots; 3.) Beautification through street tree replacement and plantings; 4.) Beautification through neighborhood upkeep of existing infrastructure; 5.) Partnerships with local community members and its stakeholders.

We will begin working on these objectives through a public forum and “action plans,” a neighborhood meeting/planning session and one or two clean-up and beautification days in partnership with The Green-Wood Historic Fund and New York City agencies (Parks, DSNY, DOT).

The tentative dates are:
Public Forum: April 3 or April 4 with Clean-up day: April 17 or April 18, 2010
Public Forum: May 29 or May 30 with Clean-up day: June 19 or June 20, 2010
Planting Date TBD

The clean-up/beautification day(s) will include street cleaning, tree pit cleaning and planting (with plant kits purchased from BBG’s “Greenest Block in Bklyn” program), tree surveying for replacement/new planting by NYC Parks, tree pit guard building via Brooklyn Shade and installation of “Please Keep Our Streets Clean & Green” custom signs in tree pits.

The initial work has been done. we have received the grant on the neighborhood’s behalf. We need your input, help and volunteerism!

  • Holy cow, does this mean that there is a chance that the stretch of sidewalk I think of as "dog s*it row" might actually get cleaned up of said excrement?

(That would be 7th ave along the cemetery, although I'm not sure exactly which blocks those are.)
  • Yes, that is part of the area...permanently, we'll have to see how that pans out.
  • Does that mean painting of the wall along the fence around greenwood :?: If not it should..also is there anything that can be done to stop people from not picking up after there dogs
  • Painting, no. Clean up, education and "keep out streets clean and green" signage, yes.
  • What can i do to help
  • e-mail jasonmgoldberg (at) hotmail (dot) com and/or aaron (at) ccgreenwoodhts (dot) com

Just ref the grant in the subject line, they can send you the info...and will be very happy to have another volunteer :)
  • more info from the CCGH news group yesterday:
    Hey All,

To follow up on Aaron's email regarding the grant we received in order to beautify the hood', we need a little help. We need people to use their eyes and ears and tell us what needs some improvement in the area, and we need it by Friday, February 5th (2 weeks from now) or we will lose the funding we worked hard to generate.

As previously mentioned, "I Love My Block" is a program that was instituted by Mayor Bloomberg a couple of years ago where the city gives different community-blocks money in order to improve their neighborhoods. HOWEVER, this is stipulated on the community-blocks doing surveys of the areas that need improvement in order for the city to come out and make these improvements. The surveys correlate to different city agencies and what these agencies cover (i.e., Department of Transportation-DOT does "Stop Signs"; Department of Sanitation-DSNY does graffiti; and Parks does trees)

What we need from you is to walk around your respective areas (detailed below) and say hey, there is graffiti on 313 23rd Street, we need to clean that up. The stop sign on 20th Street and 6th Ave fell down, we need to put that back up. The tree in front of 314 fell down and has not been replaced in 3 years, we need to fix that. People drive their cars too fast on 7th Avenue turning onto 22nd street, etc.

    Designated areas include:
23rd St. from 5th Ave to 7th Ave
24th St. from 5th Ave to 6th Ave
7th Ave from 23rd St. to 20th St.
6th Ave from 23rd St. to 24th St.

Attached are 3 separate forms that people should fill out while conducting their own surveys. These forms will then be sent by Aaron and me to the appropriate agencies to follow up and fix our problems. The 3 forms are described below:

DOT Services Form (Department of Transportation):
    -Bike racks
    -Speed humps
    -Street lights
    -Street signs

DSNY (Department of Sanitation New York):
    -Graffiti
    -Run down litter baskets
    -Cleaning of vacant lots
    -Poor garbage clean up

    Parks
    -Trees/Tree pits

Please "reply all" with any questions or concerns b/c other people may have the same issues as you.

    Thank you and good luck!

    Jason
  • If you can volunteer your time to survey the areas above, here's a link to the forms:

  • It would be great to have a stop sign on 7th Avenue and 21st Street to slow the speeding traffic going to 22nd. I contacted the DOT once about a sign there and the response was basically there hadn't been enough accidents to warrant the sign.
  • Contact Community Board 7 @ 718-854-0003 and ask the Transportation Committee to request a traffic study.

However, i would add that if you can get a petition going with some of your neighbors, it will carry more weight.

Since 7th Ave dead-ends, I'll bet DOT see's that as an effective deterrent...right or wrong.

We have a study in on 23rd St. and 6th Ave for a 3-way stop. Still waiting...
  • If not a stop sign at that intersection, then at least painting two crosswalks there would be helpful -- there are ramps on the cemetery side but no designated crosswalks. (This might also help prevent people from parking in front of the ramps.)
  • Interesting. I'll suggest it during the survey.

  • Thanks to Jason and all those who contributed to the Parks, DOT and DSNY surveys turned in last weekend.

Next step is the community meeting to be held at Historic Chapel @ Green-Wood. The space has been generously donated by The Green-Wood Cemetery.

    Here's the basic information:

Concerned Citizens of Greenwood Hts. / 23rd St. Neighbors Assoc. Community Meeting

    When: Saturday, April 10, 2010 @ 3:30PM

Where: The Historic Chapel @ Green-Wood (inside the main entrance at 25th St. and 5th Ave.)

Why: To discuss next steps on the block grant: how to get involved/education, spring clean up day (May), spring planting day (May/June), "keep our streets clean and green" signs, etc.

We have room for approx. 100 folks, which should be more than enough. Regardless, please RSVP so we can get an approx. head count. We'll be producing fliers as we get closer to the meeting.

Also, anyone who can donate time before the meeting should contact Jason Goldberg.
  • DUE TO SCHEDULING CONFLICTS THE MEETING HAS BEEN CHANGED TO THURS. APRIL 8TH AT 6:30PM AT THE HISTORIC CHAPEL AT GREEN-WOOD.

As per last e-mail, try to rsvp. Green-Wood will be giving us after hour access, so it is important we make the best use of their continued support! We will be entering/exiting through the main entrance at 25th St and 5th Ave.

Let Jason or I know if there are any questions.

More to follow as we get closer to the date.
