iPhone signal issues? — Brooklynian

iPhone signal issues?

edited November -1 in Park Slope
I've been having major signal issues the past few days in Windsor Terrace...in and around my apartment. Is anyone else experiencing AT&T signal issues or iPhone issues in the area?

  • Just curious, which iPhone do you have? My wife has the 3g and her calls have been dropping like flies over the last week. I have the 3gs and don't seem to have the same problems.
  • I have the plain old 3G
  • I've just noticed the same thing, having a hard time getting signal. I live on 16th and 7th ave and usually get 5 bars on my 3GS
  • on more thing, turning off 3G and using Edge seems to solve this issue for me..
  • I couldn't get a signal in Steinhof last night on my 3Gs
  • i feel so much better knowing it's not just me. prospect avenue between 8th ave and the park and my signal is normally decent. last few days have been constant problems. no service at all at times.
  • I'm on the same block. I have had issues here and was having major issues when I was on 12th and 8th yesterday as well.
  • Curious - I thought that AT&T service always sucked. It certainly does for me...
  • Yeah, it's never great, but the past few days have been unreasonably awful.
  • I noticed that my AT&T 3g service dropped off big time since the snow storm last week. I have an iPhone 3G and I barely can get a cell signal or data. It's usually pretty bad, but now I've gone to nearly no service at all.
  • Me too. I sit at my desk in WT and calls just drop every time. Doesn't seem to happen as much when I'm away from home. I've got the 3G version.

Can you explain this more? That must be the "E" that pops up when 3G is not available. How do you turn on/off?

    thanks
  • I disabled 3G and have been using Edge. That seems to have fixed the situation.
  • Go to Settings>General>Network and flip the "Enable 3G" to off.
  • Oh, also, if you reset your network settings, it usually helps quite a bit. Fair warning: you'll have to re-enter all of your WiFi networks and passwords.
  • You can download the "AT&T Mark the Spot" app that tells them where problem areas are with their service. It's free.

  • Its not isolated to the IPhone.

I have a Blackberry that has 3G that drops signals left and right in PS (13th St/7th Av)

And AT&T in their infinite wisdom have disabled to the option to manually switch to EDGE for blackberrys.

    Wankers.
  • Same here. I'm on 12th St near PPW and as of a little over a week ago my iPhone 3GS has become useless in my apartment unless I turn off the 3G setting and go EDGE. I've done the full network reset, phone restore and actually went to the AT&T store near my office and got a new SIM card in case that was causing the issue. None of these things have made one bit of difference. The helpful gentleman at the AT&T store who set me up with a new SIM card explained to me that AT&T's 3G network in NYC totally overwhelmed right now and recommended that I use EDGE whenever possible - and even showed me how he has his phone set up that way. I explained to him that I am paying for 3G service and don't see this as an acceptable "workaround". (My wife's 2G/EDGE iPhone is working just fine these days.)

I literally cannot make or answer a phone call at home at this point unless I turn off the 3G. Every time I try to dial out I get a "CALL FAILED" message and retrying never works. Worse yet, I'm getting texts hours after they were sent, and I can't send any at all.

Here's hoping AT&T is fixing or upgrading whatever is up in South Slope with their 3G service, because this totally blows right now.
  • The apple store today told me to use Edge too.

that's such a crap customer service answer. Did they tell you what's going on? "We're overloaded" = not acceptable
  • I'm surprised about the use of Edge, which ATT was supposed to be cutting back. While it sounds like a new phenomena, it sounds like more of the same of ATT's iPhone signal FAIL in New York.

On the opposite end of Windsor Terrace, my iPhone 3G signal has been solid up by 4th ave and 14th Street.

What? I think that that's a perfectly reasonable excuse! "We've had better success than anticipated! In the next couple years, we'll get around to revamping our infrastructure to compensate, until then please be patient while we reap profits. Also, we'd really appreciate it if you could cut back on the data-intensive applications that first attracted you to our handsets."

Yea, especially acceptable considering that AT&T cut back on capital investment over the last couple of years, and only starting increasing it again when phrases like "Class-Action Lawsuit" started getting bandied around.

FYI - the downgrading-from-3G-to-EDGE solution mentioned above is the defacto solution - AT&T's 3G network is notoriously oversaturated, and dropped/lost calls & text messages for phones on the 3G network is a well-known and well-documented phenomenon.

Needless to say, a friend of mine who was a *rabid* iPhone fan became much less of one when he missed a booty call opportunity when AT&T failed to deliver phone calls and text messages over the span of several hours.
  • My signal has always been great except for the past week or so
  • I posted 5 days ago. It's only gotten worse. So I decided I'm going to try out Sprint. They offer a 30-day trial period. And if you go here: https://bluefish.sprint.com/accenture/

you can get a free phone comparable to the iPhone (I ordered the HTC Hero) and 25% off your monthly bill. Basically unlimited everything for $50. That's half what I'm paying now for AT&T's non-existent service. I can't believe they got me mad enough to ditch my iPhone. I'm willing to cancel my contract and pay the early termination fee ($130 for me) and sell my iPhone 3GS (which goes for about $400 on ebay) just so I can get service that works. It's ridiculous. My Sprint phone hasn't come yet, but when it does, I'll be sure to come back here and report how the service is.
  • I've used Sprint since my first cell phone, longer ago than I can remember. I currently have a Palm Pre, which is as close to an iPhone as I need. I have zero dropped calls and can always get connected.

I think you'll find Sprint more than adequate.
  • Subject: Let AT&T know!

I've been having the same issues, I'm at 15th & 7th Ave. After much fighting with AT&T I got put through to a high level tech guy for the east coast. He was actually pretty bright and helpful and gave me his direct contact info.
He said there's an 88% failure rate in our area. Two weeks ago a crew from Lucent serviced the tower and I got endless phone calls and texts from AT&T telling me the problem was fixed.
Within 3 or so days the problem started up again. I've since gone back and forth with this guy and through him AT&T has released me from my contract.
Unfortunantly I'm now addicted to my damn iPhone so I'd rather they just fix it before I go back to Verizon.
Contact the guy I dealt with and let him know you're having problems too

Here's his last email to me on 3/4/10
"my apologies for not responding to you in a more timely manner,it looks like RF are retesting something at the site.‬ our ticket suggest that PiMs tested and reset...case being monitored if no resolution by 3/4, will notify RF A. We are working diligently on getting your service issue resolved"
No idea what any of the tech stuff means

  • I just came on to see if anyone was talking about this. I just started having major problems with dropped calls and failed texts on my iPhone 3GS a few days ago. When I can connect for a minute or two, people tell me I'm breaking up. Short texts usually go through, but forget mms. I live on 16th near 8th.

I chatted with an at&t tech yesterday. He first told me there were "several outages in the area" that may be affecting my service. Then he tried to "re-register my device to the network." That didn't work, so he gave me the boilerplate response, "We are aware of the issue and our network engineers are working as quickly as possible to get services restored to your area. We do not currently know when your service will be restored. I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused today."

I haven't followed up with Customer Service yet, but I'll be contacting them for a discount.
  • Honestly my only surprise is that people are just finding this to be a problem now. I've had an iPhone 3G for about 18 months and it's been more or less useless in my apartment (16th/7th) for the bulk of that time. For a while I would take calls in our back yard, but after a year or so I got tired of that, and now I just call out from my Blackberry (from work) on T-Mobile, and it works just fine. Unfortunately, that still means that I don't get voicemails, sometimes until two days after they were left, and my phone almost _never_ rings when someone calls me. Every few weeks I'll have decent service in my apartment for an hour or so, and then it'll crap out again in the middle of a call.

Honestly it never really even occurred to me to call tech support or AT&T; I've just gotten to accept that the network sucks. I'm counting down the days until July somethingth, when I can ditch this POS and buy a Droid. Congratulations AT&T, you did something I never thought was possible: making me hate an Apple product.
