  • i just read about this - totally horrible. 1010wins has more info:

  • Wasn't there another hit and run on Flatbush near St Marks not long ago? Cars go way too fast on Flatbush and run the lights all the time.
  • It's gonna get even worse when the Barclay Center has opened - can you picture it? The usual plus more beer-sodden fans post-game zooming around the nabe. Good times. And when are the Barclay's people or at least Ratner's realize now Nazi-like that Barclay's eagle insignia is? I know the bank has Nazi ties, but using such a symbol now is really out to lunch.
  • Exploiting a tragedy to further your anti Ratner agenga. Real class.

BTW, I thought that the arena was supposed to cause gridlock, which would naturally slow traffic, no? Make up your mind.

Fuck off. I don't want to get killed walking out of my door. Pedestrians getting killed and maimed is serious, and Ratner's little plan is not going to make it better.

Our friends running our city and state do not care about us. They will not care about us unless we speak up. Ratner's Environmental Impact Statement says that AY will HELP traffic because they will fiddle with the street light timing.

I am really pissed off. I shouldn't be writing when I'm this mad, but the Empire State Development Corporation also should not be coming up with documents that put our neighbors lives at risk. They have not considered any of the real impacts of Ratner's little plan.
  • reported that one of the victims is brain dead. During the transit strike there were many comments by city officials that the livery/ghetto/dollar vans would be regulated, fined and stopped.Flatbush ave from start to finish is a drag strip. Instead of running over a traffic cone or hitting a wall it's people walking and riding bikes that are run over. This thread is only a follow up to A-holes speeding through school zones and dense city streets.. Check points. Slows traffic, catches drunks, finds the uninsured, protects kids that are not in safety seats, gets drugs and guns off the street, most important lets drivers who are running lights and speeding that the police are aware. God bless these poor girls and their families.
  • The reason for this is that our wonderful police force is too busy handing out parking tickets to prevent this kind of thing from happening. Same old story. They're more concerned about making money than protecting the public. Bloomberg and his phony pity makes me sick. If he really gave two shits he would do something address this lack of safety. If the police diverted a fraction of the effort they use to write parking tickets into public safety, shit like this would happen a lot less.

tsk tsk tsk, poor jack is confused again

jackie boy, for those who actually live here

    in prospect heights

any time is appropriate ratner bashing
  • Any focus or talk of Ratner responsibility for 2 girls getting run over at 5am by some F-stick is just stupid. The car was registered to a girl in the Bronx,I don't think the drunk dumb driver was here to scope out the Barclay Center site. The fact that there is some 3rd world style transportation technique and standards used in some parts of Brooklyn is a reason for concern. I think Ratner is a butplug but he wasn't driving a green Acura on Flatbush.
  • don't you fools read a post before criticizing it? Just saying that this type of tragedy is likely to get worse with boozy fans leaving the Barclay's Center and getting into their cars (parked on our streets)......

I guess that's why 8th Ave, which is often gridlocked, is so safe. Oh wait, numerous cyclists and pedestrians have been killed there in recent years.

Gridlock makes drivers angry and more aggressive, more likely to run red lights and stop signs, and less likely to look for pedestrians and other inconveniences.
  • regardless of how much traffic there is or is not, I have little if any trouble crossing safely at an intersection. The trick is to wait for the light to be in your favor and watch for turning cars.
Those who wear dark clothing at night and then jaywalk against a traffic light are greatly increasing their chances of being hit.
  • I agree wirenut. Most of the time it's safe to cross but I've had too many close calls around here. I walk my dogs four times a day so I guess my odds are increased. Many times drivers will not yield to me in the crosswalk and have put me and my dogs in danger. I've been skimmed a few times and it's never been because they don't see me, it's because they're trying to outrun me.
  • Ive had a few close calls crossing flatbush to get to park slope. When I have a real sense of foreboding I will use the underpass at the Q stop on 7th. At least people have that option if they dont want to cross at street level. In regards to the new Stadium just imagine how many drunk people are going to pour out onto the streets and get hit by cars after a game.
  • Wirenut, I was hit by a car on Vanderbilt at 10AM on a bright morning as I crossed in the middle of the crosswalk.....it was also a hit and run, though thankfully I wasn't as badly hurt as those girls were. You are blaming the victims here without knowing if they were crossing the street correctly. Getting hit by a car as a pedestrian often - usually? - has nothing to do with the victim's behavior.
  • the time i came the closest to being hit -- my outstretched hands were hit, but luckily the bozo behind the wheel did hit his brakes in time to avoid snuffing me out with his monster urban assault vehicle -- i had just decided NOT to jaywalk, on account of its being a beautiful sunny day and why take the risk?

i looked both ways, crossed with the light, and was nearly killed by some jackass who was too busy checking out a girl on the sidewalk to look in his direction of travel as he barreled into the intersection.

yes, be careful crossing the street, but don't kid yourself that whether you get hit is entirely in your control.
  • I don't think it's out of bounds to say that this could have happened to pretty much any of us on this board. Whether or not they crossed against the light or if the driver was drunk, or if they were... Finding someone to blame doesn't lessen the scary reality that these things can happen to any of us at pretty much any time.

My heart goes out to both these girls, and especially to the family of the victim in the most critical condition. Having to make a decision about life support for a 22 year old is heart breaking. Looks like she was passionate about helping people unlike the monster who left her for dead.
  • I have lost count of how many times I've witnessed people driving like maniacs on Flatbush.

The worst intersection is Flatbush and 8th avenue, you have about 20 seconds to fully cross Flatbush before the traffic from Park Slope starts bounding directly your way, while the light is still supposedly yours. A total shame. The drivers just keep going and act as if they were making everybody a favor by slowing down just a bit so as to not to roll over a stroller or an old lady.

That said, today afternoon I saw a couple of foolish teenagers crossing Flatbush in front of Key Food in the wrong light. Drivers honked like crazy, and the kidswere right in the middle, with a smug expression on their grinning faces. I wanted to somewhat get them to Park Place and show them the huge electronic sign they have set there, "FATAL HIT AND RUN.. " Wonder if it would have made any difference.
  • flatbush is absolutely terrible for biking/crossing, as is prospect park west, 5th ave (despite the 'bike lane'), atlantic ave, eastern parkway, and fort hamilton parkway, for whatever reason underhill from the sideroad by the park and north?!? - all off the top of my head - i'm sure there are more.
absolutely terrible what happened. easily could have been me on a sober night.and on a not sober i can only think of how lucky i am
i don't want to derail but to mention Markowitz's opposition to a bike lane/slowing traffic on prospect park west. brooklyn is fucking residental/urban and not a place for highways with intersections. as a pedestrian/cyclist i've seen a number of hit and runs where i ended up helping a fellow pedestrian/cyclist, being a go between with an ambulance, or had a missed call because i was overly cautious even though i was in the right.

I was speaking in general terms and not specifically of the two women that got hurt recently.

I too had a bump from the front bumper of a car on a sunny day in Queens while crossing legally. It can happen at any time anywhere to anyone. But statistically speaking, if you jaywalk while cars have the green, you are increasing your chances of getting hit, it's just simple logic.

I drive as well as walk alot. When walking - I wait my turn. I can't count how many time adults walking children to school in the morning walk right out in front of my car when I have the green light. It happens at least twice every day. Some of them look - others don't even look.

I challenge you (or anyone else) to spend 15 minutes watching people cross a street - anywhere - and count how many cross legally compared to those that cross even when vehicles are coming at them.
  • NYPD has ID'd the owner of the car, and they're looking for her.

  • maybe NOW the police will focus more on the insanity that is flatbush in between Grand Army and 4th Ave?? is this what it will take?
  • horrible :( story.

the NY1 article from the arrest said
Erinn Phelan, who works for the mayor as head of the New York City Civic Corps was declared brain dead and is on life support.

Her friend Alma Guerrero was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

"Well I saw there was an arrest today, but that doesn’t help Erinn Phelan," said Mayor Michael Bloomberg. "I talked to her mother and father yesterday, she is making a little bit of progress, but she has a long ways to go and we pray for what may be a miracle or science to come through for this young lady."
    so . . . that doesn't sound so good...

    what a nightmare.
