Attack on Park Pl b/w Underhill and Washington

Hi Everyone,
I was attacked Sunday night (2/21) around 10pm, while walking east on Park Pl between Underhill and Washington.

The attacker was a teenage boy, about 5'7" tall, african-american, thin, and on foot (no bike or car). Unfortunately he got away and the police were not able to find him when we went canvassing later. He did not have a weapon, fortunately, but he did try to sexually assault me and may have tried to take my purse but admittedly I don't remember the physical interaction very well.

A few things I want to share with this group:
First, thank you very much to everyone who has posted about the assaults and muggings in this neighborhood in the past. I have lived in Prospect Heights for about 5 years and I feel as safe in our neighborhood as anywhere, but I have always been alert, in part because I've been empowered by the information shared on this board. Just before I was attacked I saw the attacker (as I passed him on the corner of Underhill and Park Pl), had an instinct that something wasn't right, and thought of how he matched the description of the teenage boys who have been described here after mugging or assaulting people. Because of this I was actually prepared for the attack and ready to react (by screaming and pushing).

Next, i want to thank the WONDERFUL residents on Park Pl between Washington and Underhill who appeared almost immediately in response to my screams. Especially the lovely man and his dog who walked me home, and the hero who appeared with a baseball bat. You people enabled me to fall asleep peacefully later that night, and will always be moved by your willingness to come to a stranger's aid.

Finally, I just want to send a general word of caution to everyone to just be aware of your surroundings. it doesn't have to be a fear thing, but rather an empowerment thing. My experience was troubling, but it wasn't as scary as it could've been because I was extremely aware of what was going to happen, and had time to be calm and react in an effective way. I know it doesn't always work out that way, and I do feel very lucky to have been relatively unscathed.

note: i am following up with the precinct and seeing the report through the police channels.

  • I am sorry what happened to you.... I am glad you were safe and people came out to help you.
  • Ditto what TK said. Thank you also for posting a warning.
  • Thank God you are ok...I'm very sorry you had to go through this. So nice of you to share it!
  • I hate that this happened to you. I hate that we have to be hyper aware of everything around us all the time. I am so happy and relieved that strangers came to help you when you needed it. That gives me hope. I hope you will be okay.
  • Like everyone else wrote, I am glad that you are OK, and that those on Park Place are aware enough to jump into action like that.

Sounds like you did all that you could. Being aware definitely kept this situation from becoming even worse than it was.
  • Sorry this happened to you. One small remark re: heroes and baseball bats.

Several years ago someone was attacked *in* my building. Sick as a dog I sent my wife to take a look. She started scream, help HELP! I fly out the door in my underwear, grabbing the bat that happened to be handy. I had no clue what was going on, but my wife shouts "get him, he was choking her!"

I jump down the stairs, floor by floor, and hit a big guy speeding down the stairs ahead of me over the head. I miss his skull by an inch, but get him good on the shoulder.... Boink. He tumbles forward and hits the floor with a big splat (he was on the heavy side). It was only then that I noticed he too was in his underwear. When he looked up, it turned out to be my equally heroic neighbor from two floors down...

The cops told me I was lucky he wasn't seriously hurt and didn't press charges. The poor guy moved out three weeks later.
The girl that was attacked never even bothered to file charges. Worse still, she was wrestling with her attacker over a bag of dirty yoga clothing...
The bat has since been retired.
If I hear screaming, gunshots, etc. I just call 911.
  • First and foremost, glad to hear that you were not seriously harmed and hope that you continue to overcome this experience. It is heartening to hear that our neighbors are willing to step in and help. It is also heartening to hear that info that was provided helped you in this extremely frightening situation.

Although awareness of one's surroundings is critical, I was also advised to carry a small can of wasp/hornet spray. It is supposed to be more effective than mace and readily obtained.
  • A can of WD40 and a lighter is also an effective combination.
  • Hairspray is more effective than WD40 in those cases!!!! Hairspray is alcohol based and thereby easier to ignite/spray - more effective blow torch!!!!

The travel size ones have always been my choice
  • so sorry you had to go through this!

But im happy youre ok......be careful out there peeps

Having tried both, I can tell you that they are both equally effective, although the hairspray doesn't smell as bad.
  • I wonder if we could post flyers all over the neighborhood, warning criminals that we have a neighborhood watch and that, (like the Guardian Angels) we can work in teams walking around the streets maybe even with big dogs and wearing red berets, and recruiting people and blow the hairspray torches periodically just to scare them. Okay, maybe we can start when the weather is warmer.

Okay, I know I'm joking in poor taste. I kid around when I'm nervous, but I admit I am scared. There have been a huge increase in attacks and robberies in the past few months, and it gets dark so early. But many of the robberies happened when people were around in broad daylight, around 3pm. Do we have a neighborhood watch? I am usually at meetings Tuesdays when the community meetings are held, but I was wondering if anyone knows if there are other meetings in Crown Heights other than tuesday or Thursday evenings?
  • This happened again tonight, to another person. I didn't see either incident, but I suspect it's the same person behind both.
  • BikeGurl - Adam Stephan with Channel 7 here. We've been contacted about these attacks and I'm trying to get as much information as I can. Have you heard about any other incidents besides yours and the one on March 6th? Please email me or call me when you can. Thanks
