I'm adding Taku as a poll option after having an awesome piece of hamachi from their table at the Taste of the Nation event this week.

I can't make it this week, but we should set up a group outing. I could do it 2 weeks from now (6/30 or 7/1). -
Sounds like a plan.

Yeah, so I just got back from Taro again after eating at Geido earlier this week and there's really no comparison. Taro is so much better and has such a more interesting selection. Thanks, Idlewild, for introducing alafairnadia and I to the sushi chefs.

Alfair & Carnivore, the name of the Israeli place is Olympic Pita. On CIA between Ave's J & K. They're open fron 12-12 everyday but Friday and Saturday. Lemme know if you two, and/or anyone else who reads this post would like to go this week, the next, etc. Either by IM or post. Toodles for now.

more on the joys of Israeli falafel . . .
A little closer to us on Coney Island Ave - near Cortelyou Rd in the middle of the block and expanded to doublewide frontage - is Famous Pita.
Left hand side of the street, if you are headed toward the beach. Like Olympic, it is closed Friday night until sundown Saturday . . . at which time the observant line up.
Last year they started hiring Mexican guys to work the line, but it is still deeeelicious and so very Israeli. Speak to the cashier first - you pay for your plate, then head down the cafeteria strip with your tray. They expect everyone to know The System, and you may not be treated kindly if you don't comply . . .

If you get a platter, the seemingly unlimited world of pickled stuff and smokey eggplant lies before you. If you get a sandwich, you get what you can stuff in a pita. Which is plenty.
Idlewild, do you happen to know both places? I've never been to Olympic. -

I know Famous Pita from my car service days a few years back. They were pretty good from what I remember. I have never been to Olympic. I spotted them last week when I was cycling down CIA on the way down to Coney Island. I took a gander inside and these guys were baking homemade pita which looked and smelled wonderful. They also had a decent looking meat display. As an aside, I saw a few places on CIA, Israeli/Kosher and non that looked really good. I'm all for doing culinary on spec. Let me know if you want to join in on the hijinxs. -
i've always thought olympic's baba g is the best around. really smokey and with an appropriate amount of whatever the oil they use to cook the eggplant blended in.

so you've been there? does their baba get all over everything?
I love middle eastern restaurants but sometimes, even with a warning that I'm allergic to eggplant, the stuff gets into everything and I only get to eat a few bites of food and then it's benadryl time.

I've found I do best with places that are pretty clean (beyond just reasonable deli standards). -
Anyone for late night sushi tonight? Between 9pm and 9:15pm @ Taro.
Howdy, Stranger!
