CD tower no longer for sale--useful furniture info tho

Edited: we already sold this.

We are looking to sell a compact, handmade CD tower that my husband's father built a few years ago (our apartment now has built-in shelves). We call it The Monolith, it's in excellent shape, and we're looking to find it a good home.

This is a great solution for storing lots of CDs in a small space. It holds more than 1,100 CDs, packing in 20 shelves (10 per side) in a space 77" high and only 24.5" wide. The base is actually a bit wider, 27.5", because there are wheels, and the extra width provides stability.

My husband asked his father to create something ideal for apartment living: double-sided, mobile and tall -- but not so tall that an average-size man couldn't reach the top shelf. A music junkie, my husband also asked that each shelf have no dividers, for easy alphabetizing; be high enough to slide a finger in above the jewel cases; and accommodate funny-shaped CD cases (DVD-As and small box sets will fit). His Dad delivered, with this made-to-order case.

It's pretty heavy (read: sturdy), but because of the wheels it would be relatively easy to move within the neighborhood. The Monolith is made of solid pine and painted black; the shelves were sanded between paint coats, ensuring that jewel cases slide around smoothly.

It served my husband for just under a decade (before he outgrew it), and if we hadn't installed built-in shelves, he'd still be using it.

$150 or best offer. We're looking to sell this sometime over the next couple weeks. We should have some pictures to post tomorrow.

  • Are you happy with your built-in shelves? I'm looking to get some built-ins installed, and have been looking for a reference for someone who does good work at a reasonable price.
  • Very happy. However, we bought the shelves at the Cabinet Shop in Park Slope and had my father-in-law install them, so that's not much help. I can definitely say that the guy at the Cabinet Shop does really good work. I used to think that they were like Gothic Cabinet Craft but the quality is way, way better. Here are some pictures of the project:

  • Subject: THE MONOLITH...

    Hello Emily:
I would be VERY interested in the cd tower... it sounds like quite an efficient piece of furniture!

Also, nice work on the built-ins... so sleek!
  • Thanks! I am planning to post some pictures of the tower later (if my husband remembers to upload them), but otherwise you could just stop by and look at it. I think we will be around after work tonight, and maybe other days this week (except definitely not Wednesday). PM me if you'd prefer to do that.
  • Yes, GREAT shelves. I like the "library" feel of the room.

I also would definitely be interested in the CD tower ... of course I do realize I'm not the first to indicate an interest.

I hate to speak for ana.log, but I know she had some REALLY, REALLY nice built-ins done in her apartment by California Closets.

    (sorry, ana.log, I couldn't control myself.)
  • you speak the truth. i do have a nice set of external "wardrobe' type closets built in to my bedroom. i could probably snap a pic if anyone wants to see what they can do, although there are also examples on the California Closets web site.
  • Okay, here are some pictures of the tower. They're not huge, but the phpbb URL tag doesn't seem to allow you specify the width and I don't want to break the page, so you're gonna have to click on 'em.

hey there, if still available i would like to stop by and see the tower in real life.
  • It is still available, but we are going to be in and out over the next few days so the best time to come see it would be over the weekend. Since you can't PM me, you could email public at beelzebot dot net and let us know when might be a good time to stop by.
  • I wound up getting shelves and cabinetry built custom and installed from The Cabinet Shop on 7th Ave. They were very nice, and the prices were reasonable. If anyone's interested, PM me and I can send you pics.
