Seat belt violations anyone?
I pulled out of my parking spot, saw a police car double parked at the light on 7th av and thought nothing of it... I passed him and not 2 seconds later I got pulled over. He gave me a ticket for driving without a seat belt ($130). I literally left my parking spot and was pulled over within 50 feet, hardly enough time to put a seat belt on. After he wrote me a ticket, he drove in front of me, went to the next stoplight and set up shop again. Later in the afternoon, I saw a different police car doing the same thing... Anyone else had this happen? I thought there was a shortage of police these days... ? Buckle up in the Slope!

It takes two seconds to put on a seatbelt . There's plenty of time to do that before you pull out of your parking spot. That does seem like a pretty hefty fine, though.
-
I got a seatbelt violation a few years back when I moved my car across the street for alternated side! I "drove" no greater than 5 mph and no further than 25 feet. I argued like a wolverine then got handed the ticket. Carazy.
-
I'm with mdgately on this. Putting on a seat beat should be as automatic as turning on the ignition. Even for alt-side, you never know when some unseen idiot is speeding down the street in their fresh-direct-yellow-school-bus-car-service vehicle.

You usually put your seat belt on while you are driving?
Not smart. -
There is a law requiring those in a motor vehicle to wear seatbelts - just as there are laws restricting the use of hand held cell phones. You got busted - sorry. I feel your pain - just sucks to get hit with a fine like that. Look at the bright side - they didn't decide to inspect your vehicle for other possible violations!!!! The worst one I ever got: a peeling registration sticker ($80). Fought and fought - NADA.
We just have to realize there are a greater number of tickets written in certain areas of Brooklyn (you see the number of agents prowling the streets in PS, BH and BR). This is a huge sources of revenue for the city - so unfortunately we all have to beware. -
I don't understand the "hardly enough time to put on a seat belt" comment. The seat belt goes on as soon as you get in the car, you shouldn't be driving the car period without a seat belt on even for 50 feet. you got caught, learn a lesson and put your seat belt on as soon as you get in the car.

(1) Open door.
(2) Sit in seat
(3) Close door.
(4) PUT ON SEAT BELT
(5) Turn ignition
(6) Put in gear and drive.
What's interesting about your story Mr. GrievousAngel is that you somehow think that distance and seatbelts have some sort of relationship. Furthermore, unlike exactly 13, you make no suggestion that you were just moving your car across the street or something... i would almost excuse that. Instead, you seem to think that there is some threshold where a seatbelt should be put on and before which it is not necessary... This does not exist!
Where your damn seatbelt -- I don't really care about you, but you are an example to others that are younger than you... even if you don't think so. I care about them. -
Yeah - OP is ridiculous. Not enough time? You put it on before you pull out. What's the big deal?
Now, I'm curious - I've heard you can get a ticket for talking on a cell phone even if you're not actually moving. I think my father was pulled over on the side of the road once, sitting in neutral, and got a ticket. I wonder if that's technically legal? Does the car actually have to be running? What if you're sitting in a parking spot? -
I think if the car is on, they can give you a ticket. If you are pulled over and the car is off, you are ok, but if the car is still turned on (meaning in their minds, you can pull away at any second), then they can ticket you.
-
GrievousAngel- . You "saw" the police car and "drove past it". Are you kidding or on cloud 9? Don't you think that your actions were tantamount to flipping the bird at the officers? You showed total DISRESPECT and got what you deserved! It's a different story if you're in violation and didn't see the police but by your own admission you drove right past them while in violation. And now, it's poor me and don't they have anything better to do. Grow up!
-
I open the door. Sit down. Put on the seat belt. Start the car. Drive. In that order. No matter where I am going. Once you make it a habit, it is something you get used to - even if you are just moving across the street......

Yes.. I put my seat belt on after a block or two... KILL ME NOW. I hate trying to park or pull out of a spot with a seat belt on, it's uncomfortable and limits my range of motion when checking my blind spot. But that's just me. And "not enough time" was an exaggeration of coarse... and I guess a stupid one.
Did I once say "poor me"? No. I didn't argue with the officer, was polite, and took what I deserved. Just posting because I wanted to see if this happened to anyone else yesterday... saw a pattern of police that appeared to be doing the same thing, and thought it was unusual. I had never seen this personally in PS. Thought to warn others..
Exactly13... that's the kind of response I was hoping for... a similar experience getting pulled over without a seat belt in close proximity to your parking space.
Geez...y'all are more uptight than the crazy dog people at the meadow in Prospect Park... wait, I think this IS that crowd. Keep up the hate!
And to those who were civil, disregard the previous sentence. -
Yeah, you should always wear a seatbelt, but there are other issues I would rather cops focus on. If they just need to easy $$-making tickets, I'd rather they go after people endangering others, like those that drive/double park in bike lanes (plaza street is a great spot for this) or stop in the crosswalks at lights or talking on the phone while driving and I'm sure there are plenty of others.

No, GrievousAngel, that's not what you said . Re-read your original post and you will see that the gist of it was a rant about how you (and others) were victimized by the police. Near the very end of your post, you allude to alerting/inquiring from others. Sorry if you were offended but we're all adults here (I presume). Yes and you were looking for sympathy from a fellow poster and got it. My post was admittedly pejorative but it boggles the mind how naive some people are. Please answer: Do you not think that it was foolish and disrespectful to those officers for you to drive right past them clearly in violation of the law when you knew full well that they were there?
-
G2BDON, what is this about "disrespectful"? Who says cops are entitled to respect?
How many times have you seen cops pull a u-turn in the middle of the street, or go through a red light, without turning on their light bars or their sirens? How often have you seen state troopers, anxious to get home at the end of their shifts, driving (again, without light bars or sirens) at speeds the rest of us would get ticketed for?
When cops show respect to the ordinary taxpayers who pay their salaries, then perhaps they will deserve respect. Until then, they're merely an occupying army, commanding obedience, but not respect. -

Actually at first sight I though there was no one in the police car... I assumed the officer(s) could be double parked while going in the deli, it happens. By the time I realized he was in the car, I was being pulled over. Left this out of the OP because I didn't want to bore you with every detail, I'm that considerate. lol. I am not offended, but I do love your pettiness. And I re-read my post several times and don't see it as a "poor me" rant... sorry, I truly don't. I was in no way victimized, they were doing their job and I wasn't doing mine. Just posting an anecdote like the rest of you.
And yes... as a taxpayer, it is alarming to hear about all-time low numbers of police, who seem to steer clear from the bad neighborhoods where they are really needed. Meanwhile, crime is on the rise again in BK, but they are in PS writing up traffic violations. Just saying. -
G2BDON has got to be a cop.
-
Ok booklaw- Even with your premise "occupying army, commanding obedience", the point is; don't put yourself in a situation where you are clearly flouting the law RIGHT IN FRONT OF the very element that can/will summons you and then cry about it. It's silly. As far as your other feelings, you are entitled to them but those actions you describe (by some police officers) are just fodder for conversation and are something we all have to live with, akin to paying taxes.
-
GrievousAngel- Let's not make this personal. Sorry if you thought that was my intention. No, not a cop and probably far more to the left than you might imagine. I say this respectfully and constructively; think about your actions and avoid unnecessary situations that are detrimental to you. You do realize that your $130. donation to NYC was totally avoidable. Yes, we all make mistakes, but if you see a meter maid coming, put a quarter in the meter. You will pop less Rolaids in life.

Put on a seatbelt to ASS park? I don't even put on pants to do that dance.
Thanks for the warning! -
If you're gonna do the crime, you gotta pay the fine.
-
I painted a seatbelt on the outside of my jacket. Works like a charm. I thought everyone knew about that.

Ha! This sounds like me.....but I wear the seatbelt...

Now that's a good idea cause it should be my business whether I want to wear a seat belt or not. -
It's not just "your business" when we ALL have to absorb the ridiculously high -- and completely preventable -- medical costs when you crash your car. Or would you pay the entire bill? If you intend on paying the FULL cost of your medical care and not use insurance or any discounts, then I agree. Go ahead and not wear your seatbelt.

I wonder if CNN will report on this?

ABC has a story about NYPD officers being required to meet quotas (shocking, I know). 20 summonses & 1 arrest per month.

You are absolutely correct but that doesn't stop the a-hole from speeding down your street, hitting you from behind and you flying through your window. If you don't buckle up for yourself - at least do it for the people who love, care and depend on you.
