is there outdoor seating @ cafe grumpy?

When it's warmer they have a bench out front, don't know if it'll be out today. And since you're in the area, go across the street and get a bagel from Bagel Hole. Whichever is freshest out of the oven.

Yes, it's called Naidre's --just go across the street --and get your coffee there ;-)

cafe grumpy has FAR better coffee than naidres.
in fact, in the latest issue of time out new york, cafe grumpy made the list of the top 10 coffee shops in new york city.
along with gorilla coffee.

no outdoor seating. But if you're a patron of this place I would make it a habit of going a few times a week. Doesn't look like they are doing too well.

ell if they are not doing well.. has nothing to do with the coffee..
It is terrific. -
I agree that Grumpy's coffee is fantastic, maybe the best in the slope, but if they are doing poorly, there are several reasons that I can tell...
First of all, the place is just not inviting - it's strictly a 'to go' place. There is only one table, with a few uncomfortable chairs and is really way too small for any more than that. So, while their coffee is far superior to Naidre's, I've opted to go to Naidre's at times just to have a place to sit...
Another reason is that Grumpy is way too expensive. I understand that they import their coffee from all these exotic places, and that you're paying for quality, but there has to be a happy medium... If I remember correctly, some of the regular coffees are around 4 or 5 dollars - that's for a coffee, not a coffee drink (like a latte or something fancy).
The last reason is that since each cup is individually brewed, which no doubt adds to the quality, there is a major drawback - it takes way too long to get a cup, making it very challenging to grab a quick cup on your way to the subway or to work, etc...
So, since commuters might avoid it for time reasons, and non-commuters may avoid it for lack of seating, it's sad to say that one of the best coffee places around may not be around much longer... -
About a month ago or so I walked by Cafe Grumpy and decided to treat myself to a double espresso. I wanted to drink it while walking home and I was told that it is their policy that they will not sell espresso to go because espresso will not taste good in a paper cup. I mentioned that I had been drinking espresso for years from paper cups and it always tasted just fine. But, I was told, if I wanted an espresso I would have to drink it there. So I left and made an espresso when I got home. It was good and cheaper. I know one thing, I won’t be spending any money at Cafe Grumpy. I get grumpy when folks deny me the true pleasure of walking with my iPod on a crisp day with a few shots of espresso.

I am drinking a cup of coffee right now from them. It's amazing. And no, it was not $5.00. It was a total of $2.50... plus buy 10, get 1 free, and 0.25 off for your own cup. So really, the mark up is not nearly as big as everyone believes. Granted, I don't buy there most expensive cup... but still.
Apartment Blues, that is ridiculous! Really stupid. You should go it with your own cup and pour it in and walk out, just to spite. -
I think the coffee is good, but I agree with all points above. I don't mind paying a little more if the quality is good.
I find the service to be kind of snobbish, which makes the whole experience a little unpleasant. I know the name is Grumpy, but it would still be nice if the employees could smile and say "thank you". (Thats something they could easily change, btw) -
I think gadmo has hit the nail on the head. I went in there today thinking I would sit for a while, have a cup and do a little bit of work. I walked in and walked right out again. The place was just not inviting at all. Bad and loud music, and only the one uncomfortable table as Gadmo described. I don't know what kind of place they're trying to be, but I doubt that any place can pay the rent for that spot selling cups of take out coffee.

they were just named one of the best coffee shops in nyc by the new york times:
heard they were doing just fine. every time i've been in there, there's been a crowd. i'd rather have a terrific cup of coffee to go and find a place to sit in the sun than get a terrible cup of coffee (starbucks, tea lounge) at a place where you can sit. that's just me though. everyone likes something different.
