Shirts Come Back From Dry Cleaner with Spots and Stains

easilyfound
edited November -1 in Park Slope
Does this happen to anyone else? Every so often, I will get back a shirt from the dry cleaners and it has some kind of spot or stain on it that was not there when I brought in the shirt. Today, a pink shirt with some blue stains along the bottom of the pocket. Each time, the cleaner swears the stain was there when I brought in the shirt and that they did not put it there. If this doesn't happen to anyone else, I'll yield and say that I'm bringing in shirts with stains that I don't see. But I really don't think that is happening.

Rant over.

  • I have not encountered this. The worst thing that has happened to any of my shirts at a dry cleaner is broken buttons.
  • No, that can happen at a dry cleaner or (especially) at a wash & fold, if they screw something up in the dry cleaning process or there's some left over liquid in the washer (do you have your shirts laundered or dry cleaned?).

There are a few good dry cleaners around, and a bunch of bad ones. I'd switch.
  • Not sure if they're laundered or dry cleaned. I guess I'll ask. Which dry cleaners do consider good?
  • I've been taking shirts to the dry cleaner on 7th Ave btw 2nd & 3rd streets for years and am very happy. The one on 4th Street just above 7th Ave is good for dry cleaning, and slightly cheaper too, but I had too many missing buttons so I switched to the other one for shirts.
  • I think I'm a little bit south of you, but I had bad experiences with dry cleaning (and laundry) at Apple Cleaners on 7th and 13th. For the last year or so I've been taking my dry cleaning to the little storefront on the NE corner of 7th and 16th, and have had good results - good enough for basic items and shirt laundry anyway, i.e. no missing buttons, fraying or spotting. But as for a "good" dry cleaner (say, a dinner jacket or my wife's wedding dress) I don't have anywhere in the neighborhood that I trust a that level.
  • It's happened to me and my husband at different times/different cleaners. I finally found one that has yet to ruin something. *fingers crossed*.

You need to find a new cleaner...
  • "blue stains on the bottom of the pocket" sounds like a pen leaked.
  • I also use the cleaner on 7th b/n 2nd and 3rd. I've brought my dress shirts there for years and have never experienced what you described. At worst there might occasionally be a spot caused by excess starch, which I know will go away the next time the shirt is washed.

Yes. That is what the cleaner said. But I know it is not from a pen.

    Where is that cleaner located?
  • The good one I use now? I don't remember the name, but it's next to South Paw on 5th Ave across the street from Key Food. They do it in house. In my limited experience, in house cleaners do a better job than those that outsource.
    Good luck!
  • This happened to me a few times at the cleaners next to Dizzys - that had the fire. The last time, the way the stain happened, it was clear it was from them - the stain looked the same and was in the same general area on every shirt. I stopped going to them and started going to Spotless Cleaners on 10th and 7th ave. So far so good...
