Park Slope Happy Hour 7/20/06

Vote here for location. I've started with 4 popular options from the other thread. If anyone feels strongly about another place, I'll add one more. Loki won last time so that shouldn't be a choice this time.

This poll will close on Monday 7/17 at midnight.

I'm guessing there's a collective vote by horny people who want to see the tight-shirt girl and cheap people who want a free drink.
I fall into neither category, which is why I voted for FF. I want manchego.

I'll bring you a piece of manchego to munch in the corner while the rest of us enjoy our free drinks :) (and those so inclined to do so ogle  ).

BTW did you ever try the archly feminist Womanchego from the cheese stall at the GAP Greenmarket? Gender politics aside it's quite a nice piece of cheese (although it doesn't come close to their hilariously-named Hooligan). With luck my son will want to watch Wallace & Gromit tonight - I feel the urge to watch A Grand Day Out with all this talk of cheese.

I love both of those cheeses. That Cato booth is awesome!

ok, what's your problem with commonwealth's?

after you initially came off as a bit rude and confrontational ("i fucking HATE Commonwealths"), after I mentioned that I was a fan of bar, I let it slide, being one who finds web board conflicts to be extremely trite and silly, but I see you're still attacking the bar so I'll take the bait and ask... why?

You say it has no personality, what does that mean?

It's got a great jukebox, an outdoor patio, candle lit interior, nice bartenders, a crowd that tends to be over 25 years old, does this not define a certain personality?

The only thing I can think is that you had a bad experience there, which wouldn't be the fault of the bar at all.

I just really don't understand the slander

what about the new bar on union?
any word on what that's like?

perch really isn't a bar (I know they sell beer and someone has sworn to wear a tight t-shirt or something, but it's not what I define as a bar).

oh well, I'm sure a good time could be had there as anywhere

Am curious - do you work there?

I'm not slamming Commonwealth (nor am I the original anti-Commonwealth poster) although I don't think it's anything too special either.

If somebody had a bad experience there, how are you SURE it's not the fault of the bar at all, as you say?

I've had bad experiences at bars that WERE the bar's fault - rude staff, bad music, bad food/drinks, etc. To me, those type of bad experiences ARE the fault of the bar.

On the other hand - an asshole giving me a dirty look? Not the bar's fault.

A little Devil's Advocacy at work.
  • I'll admit that I've only been to Commonwealth (isn't it singular?) twice. my initial thoughts about it regarded the circumstances in which was opened, which seemed kinda petulant and distasteful. as such, I went in there expecting it to be really awesome - I thought the owner had something to prove.

in any case, the jukebox was okay, a little loud and obnoxious. I was there with a group of friends from boston and we were catching up. the place didn't seem very busy and we were drinking a lot. the bartender wasn't very chatty, but whatever, maybe he was having a bad day. he also didn't give any buy backs - but maybe that's bar policy. there wasn't much to look at, and it was a little ... unfeeling, which was honestly just my own impression. so I left feeling blah about it - nothing really drawing me to the place.

a few months later, I went on a PS bar crawl with some guys I know, and we hit most of the old standbys - the gate, the royale, great lakes (all really different places, I think) - and then we wandered into commonwealth and were stared in the face by like ten 22 year olds. the music was a little green dayish and we all just looked at each other and went back to great lakes.

I tend to give bars about two tries before writing them off. I don't think that's "slander", I think that's just prioritizing. and hey, you can't ... click a mouse? (throwing a rock seems excessively violent) on this board without coming across someone's negative impression.

maybe instead of dissing my opinion and acting like I'm attacking you (which is different than me saying "I fucking hate Commonwealth"), you should try to tell people why you like the place and maybe they'll agree with you. reading your opinion of the place makes me think the joint is full of overly-sensitive whiners. prove me wrong.

    nope, don't work there
spoken to the owner a few times, nice guy
but apart from that, no ties with the place

and yeah, I could see a bar being the problem
but not that bar, as I've always found the bartenders to be friendly
and when the "fucking HATE that bar" was mentioned
it was said that was because it had "no personality"
which doesn't imply getting unjustly 86'ed or anything so dramatic

ha, nope, you nailed it, it's a place full of overly-sensitive whiners. Nice!

No need to prove you wrong (although they do give buy backs and the crowd tends to be in their 30's, plus they have an outdoor patio now that's really rather nice). I now like that you hate it.

It's all come to a happy conclusion.

I confess, my vote for Perch was made under the assumption that it is an actual, like, bar - do they have hard liquor?

That place on Union looks intriguing...going to need to check that out down the road.
  • sigh. you guys - this is my POINT. perch has a FULL bar - wine, beer, liquor, sangria... everything. just no one knows about it.

    i swear.

and did i mention the garden?

    can you get some manchego?
and some bread would be nice too...

Hey, hey, I just needed a little clarification. I'm in.
  • I have to agree with alfairnidia, I can't fucking stand commonwealth. What it lacks in personality, it more than makes up for in a certain upper east side Dorian's charm.

Ah... It's not every day that you hear a "preppie murder" reference!
  • you guys are welcome to bring manchego if you like - i'll even put it in the fridge for ya ;) we do have bread... and a full dinner menu. the mac 'n' cheese is outtasite... and we just added a new salmon dish, smoked trout and beet salad, and crispy rosemary chicken...

Will any of these bars provide free drinks if we agree to promote them throughout the Brooklyn blog world?
  • i was out on 5th las night and trying to find somewhere to keep drinking and grab a bite. So, strolled into Perch and met Meredith, who was thrilled to see a DS'er, apparantly none of us had taken her up yet for shame. She's a quality mixologist, cute as a button, and they make a good BLT.

If I had to compare the place to anywhere, it's like a hipper Cocoa Bar.
  • where is perch? 5th and ... ass-end?
  • someone said it's close to ginger's on 5th

    flatbush farm 4 : perch 6
    it's close

    i'm in for thursday
    they're both good

not as good as royale.... but
  • With 547 views on this thread, I'm hoping it's more than just me, quijibo (sp?) and steve this time...
  • Hard to believe it, but it may just be you and Q. I'm going to be caught up with something in the early evening it looks like.
  • and my boss is having a shindig at her place after work ... on the upper west side. not sure I can stomach being there and PS in the same day.:wink::wink:
