postal service not good today — Brooklynian

postal service not good today

apartment blues
edited November -1 in Park Slope
I took the day off today and was home all day as was my wife. I went out to check the mail and there was a receipt for a certified letter. We were home all day and the mail carrier did not ring our bell. So I looked outside and saw the postal worker on the block. I went up to her and asked if she had the letter. She said yes and gave it to me to sign. I asked her why she didn’t ring the bell and she said because it wasn’t her route and she was filling in for the regular carrier. I asked her why substitute carriers don’t ring doorbells and she actually said to me that my apartment had been labeled or marked as not having a resident home during the day so she felt no reason to ring the bell. I told her that we would appreciate having our doorbell rung when we need to sign for something.

Does anyone wonder why UPS is driving the postal service out of business?

  • I beg to differ...

But seriously, USPS sucks. I get everything shipped UPS, and do almost everything else electronically. USPS is only for junk mail.
  • @Carnivore-

That is funny, but seriously, you are right- the Post Office is awful.
Have had times in the past where the deliverers would actually sign my name for my packages, even admit to it, and claim that they did not know it was a felony.
One time, this happened with the same person twice in a row. The guy is out of the postal job now.

Here are some handy numbers because when the majority of us demand better service it is possible.

Customer Service for Postal Inspections 1-877-876-2455

Brooklyn consumer Affairs District Office 718-348-3900

Consumer Advisory Council for the Post Office
    271 Cadman Plaza East.
    Andrea Boroughs 718-348-3606
  • Not that I am sayin that UPS is any better, but for instance, if you want something delivered registered and insured where only you sign for it or the person or company will send it again until you receive it, the USPS is the most secure way of sending it.

Many companies will absolutely not post anything registered and insured with UPS, DHL, or FED EX ( who is no more Federal than the Federal Reserve- which has no reserves by the way)

Mess ups happen, but at least the USPS are bound to have it fixed ( only with registered and insured) until you receive it, the rest of their services are only good for junk mail.
  • Tridetine... you're amazing. You trust and value the USPS?! But they're the government!! And before you say anything, please note the little dig you made at the Federal Reserve as a case in point!

(by the way, the Federal Reserve holds $250 billion in gold alone, and a total of $2.5 trillion in assets.)
  • I beg to differ. I trust the USPS *****FAR***** more than UPS. I've had items smashed at the UPS Foster Ave location. More than once.

I've waited days for UPS to deliver an item they have on the truck - they ring the wrong bell, come mid-afternoon when nobody's home, refuse to deliver to a UPS store. If you want to pick-up your package they only have the Foster Ave location, servicing all of Brooklyn, open only M-F 9:30-5.

I've never had any issue with the USPS. The package is always at my local post office, I can get it whenever I want - even Saturdays.

If at all possible I use FedEx for home deliveries.
  • Tybu6-

Please reread what I post before going on your rants.

Have you have had anything very valuable sent to you registered and insured?

If you have, you will then realize that what I am saying is valid, and no, I do not claim to say that the USPS is 100% trustworthy, but I still have to use what kinda works while at the same time advocating for better standards.

    Got a prob with dat?

And about the Federal Reserve Bank, with some research, you will find out that they (as a private bank) are above any detailed questions from Congress as to any question of them being completely audited.

So that means, what is hidden is not really out in the open.

Why are you insinuating that I think that everything that has to do with Government is bad?

Yea, keep trying to figure me out, tybur6.

What the woman told you is a total and shameless lie.

The postal workers in Park Slope (north, in my experience) NEVER ring the bell to check if th addressee of a certified letter or package is home. Make that NEVER NEVER NEVER. No matter if they are the regular mail carriers or someone covering for them.

I work from home and I am home every time the postman comes to deliver the mail. NEVER I have had him ring my bell. The modus operandi of these people is getting the letter/package and filing the form on the spot. It is too much work for them to actually ringing the bells and risking having to wait for the people to come down or - horror of horrors - having to go upstairs and deliver the mail.

The postmen and women in PS / Brooklyn are lazy people without a shred of decency. I can say it clearly because I have lived in Queens and Manhattan and in both EVERY TIME different mail carriers will make a point to ring the bell and deliver the mail.

And I do not want to get started about what happens after you get the darn orange notice and have to go to these hellholes of post offices in Atlantic Avenue or 9th st. to pick up the letter or package. How fun is to have to wait endlessly in line to get your stuff, when only two or one of the windows are open. How fun is to have them tell you that the said stuff is yet to return to the post office, even two or three days AFTER it was supposed to be there.

How fun is to finally get your stuff and find that some employee at the said post office has dropped/damaged the package or letter and there is nothing to be done, because you see, these people are simply untouchable, they have their own rules, they take as many breaks as they want, they act as slow and ineffective as they wish.

Sorry for the long post. i could not help myself but vent about five years of fury.
  • I am so glad I live in WT. That shit doesn't happen here. I know my postal carrier by name....had the same one for 10+ years. He retired and now I have a new guy. He rings the bell even when there is too much mail to fit through the slot. I also know the guy who drives the package truck (although not by name) and he has a bit of the opposite problem. He'll ring the bell 5 times in 10 seconds. You get to the door as fast as you can just to shut him up. Plus, he'll ring all of the bells in the house no matter who the package is addressed to.
  • I live in Crown Heights. The Brevoort PO is THE worst I have ever experienced. The line is always a minimum of 45 minutes. I have so many bad experiences with mail not delivered or mis-delivered that I will not shop with a web site that uses the USPS to deliver.

I live in a two family that has both mailboxes plainly marked with labels that say "Smith mail only. Jones mail upstairs please". And vice versa. It has taken five years for the regular letter carrier to get this right. When he's away, all bets are off. When it comes to parcel delivery, I look out my window every time I hear a diesel truck on my street. Invariably, the guy will go to the garden apartment and leave it outside (even when a signature is required) rather than walk up the stairs. I run outside to explain to the same couple of people that they need to actually walk up some stairs and ring the doorbell, which they never do. They'd rather leave a slip.

We had a parcel delivered to a non existent name and non existent apartment number. It was left outside and it was open when we got it. We tried to track down the senders on line to no avail. I called the PO and, as usual, the phone was busy for an hour when I gave up. I called the main UPS number and was told that there would be a a $15 charge to have them pick it up. Then she told me to call the PO to get it settled. I told her I think they take the phone off the hook. She tried and couldn't get through. She said the best she could do was send them an email to take care of it. It's a shame, but I know I'm going to have to throw the package out because I know nothing will happen from this point.
  • USPS for my office in PS is terrible. But at least this thread inspired me to list that to that song again.
  • Until a few months ago I had the same complaints about the Post Office everyone else does. But then we got a new mailman. He climbs our stoop everyday and, when our mail will not fit through our slot, rings the bell and cheerfully waits while our tired old knees carry us slowly down two flights of stairs to answer the bell.

He also takes care not to deliver mail to us that is clearly addressed to people on other streets... the first mailman we've ever had in the Slope who took the trouble to do that.

I guess he missed the class the other Postal workers took on how to take advantage of their civil service status to mess with our minds.

Whatever the reason, I'm thinking of adopting him as a member of my family... I don't want to lose this guy...
  • ^ he must be related to my guys. I also think it helps that my area is full of old school cops and firefighters who wouldn't put up with shit like that. My UPS guy is great too, and so is the FedEx guy (who is also hot....although I haven't seen him in a while...too bad)
  • USPS, UPS, and FedEx all suck in general, but they all have plenty of friendly, professional, hardworking employees. Personally, I'd put each company's record at 50-50. It's just the luck of the draw whether you get a good one or a bad one on any given day. The problem, for me, is that when something goes wrong with a delivery from any of these companies, you have to walk through hell to the problem fixed.
  • Today?

I have never had a good USPS experience here in BK. One exception. The manager of the Van Brunt station actually got on the phone with me one day to resolve a package issue and was very efficient and lovely.

That does not make up for the pile of mail that gets thrown into the puddle in front of my door daily, even though I have a mailbox that fits the mail quite nicely with minimal effort. Or the lost packages. Or the mythical visits by the package guy before he puts my stuff in Van Brunt. Or the certified mail I get that is not addressed to me. Or the insanely rude staff at Van Brunt.
  • ehh, my carrier in south slope is pretty good

we moved in over a year ago, and for the 1st few months had great service... then for two weeks we didn't get most of our mail

we got in touch with our carrier by phone (i didn't even think that was possible), and she explained that she had been on vacation, knew our address, and noted that our names were not listed on the door or mailbox, so the replacement carrier didn't deliver sensitive items :D

aside from that hiccup, i get my mail w/out issues: she rings our doorbell if she has packages or needs signatures, etc.

same with our UPS guy actually.
  • Yeah... the "regular carrier on vacation" is a bit tiresome. The fact is that mail carriers get quite a bit of vacation and if there best solution to coverage is using untrained, carriers with no knowledge of the routes.... my god. Just absurd.
  • well, let's see what happens if they cut out mail on Saturdays

  • Love, love, love UPS! I have had the same UPS man for 4 years now and he is the best!

As for the mail , it sucks and has sucked for a long time around here.
  • So I was just at the post office in Sunset Park. There were about 16-17 people in line ahead of me and three postal workers at the windows. As I got closer to the front of the line two of the windows closed. There were now about 35 people in line and the line was out the door. The postal employee helping me was casually chatting to another postal worker about how only one window would be open for the next hour. Most of the people in line were Chinese and it seemed that many would need Mandarin translation, yet the only employee left working a window did not speak Mandarin. In addition, there were no self service areas. I wonder if such a thing would happen in Park Slope.
  • Yes it would. Van Brunt is a hellhole.
