Have anybody used pet sitter?

Hi all!

I am looking for an advice about hiring a pet sitter. I am going away over next weekend, and am thinking about hiring a cat sitter for one visit. I found a
company called "Pets on the Move" based on Prospect Hights.

I talked with a guy he sounded nice, but I need to leave my key to
ask him to come over while I am away. He said his company is "bonded and insured for liability."

Have anybody used that company/person, or other pet sitting services? How can I do to make sure that the person is trustworthy? Any tips appreciated...

Thanks,

Gretch

  • I use my neighbor's 9-year-old daughter.
  • When I lived in Park Slope, I used Amy Barta and never had a problem.

  • I have a wonderful pet sitter -http://www.bestpalpetcare.com/

And yes she has keys to my apartment and is totally trustworthy.
  • i think you just have to meet the person and hope for the best. i never had a pet sitter until january of this year and when i met her in person, i instantly felt at ease and she was so great to my dogs. handing her my key was a little strange since i'd only talked with her for about 20 minutes but like i said, i just hoped for the best and so far, so good.

her name is carol and her website is britishcanineacademy.com. she's out to the country right now so may be slow to get back with you.
  • Ask for some references. It's always weird, but I've not had any trouble with 3 dog walkers so far. They are all counting on it as their main business and don't want to do anything to screw that up.
  • I've left my cat home alone for a weekend...they're cats. They shit in a box. Get an automatic feeder/water contraption and lock the door. It's not like she'll miss her walks.
  • I met the person who I was thinking about hiring last night, and he seemed nice. He gave me contact info for references, and show me the insurance contract for liability. I decided to leave my key to the neighbors this time....I decided to give a try to cat sitter as a test run, since I have a plan to travel longer later this year.

Thank you very much everybody for info and recommendations!

  • I'm sure things will be fine - when I needed a cat sitter I went to someone I knew and they recommended ToniAnn at BestPalPetcare - they had known her for years. She also can give medication (although she charges a little extra for that). When my cat first went on fluids, she offered to come over to give me a lesson at home to supplement my lesson at the vet.
  • PM me if you need a reliable pet sitter in South Slope. I use her for both my dogs when I leave town. She has cats too so it shouldn't be an issue.
  • I used Sandee's Kitty Sitting over Xmas this year (recommended by others on this board) and I can't rave enough about her. Sandee spent about 45 minutes with me meeting the boys, playing with them and getting me comfortable leaving them in her care. Text messages were sent for updates and an adorable kitty diary left to chronicle their adventures while I was gone. My boos deserve the best and Sandee (and her sitters) are it.

    Ditto. Amy's my cat sitter.
  • Thank you very much again for all the recommendations. I have tried the Pets on the Move this time, and it went well. It was only for 2 nights 3 days leave, but cats were so much calmer when we came back, and the cleaning (of the cats' mess) was so much easier! Next time, I think I can trust him enough to leave keys.

I was surprised how many people actually have used pet services. No wonder, though, since I see so many dogs in the neighborhood :-)
