Prospect Heights - Safe? Moving Soon! — Brooklynian

Prospect Heights - Safe? Moving Soon!

I know this is probably an ignorant query, but I was hoping residents could give me feedback on their thoughts about Prospect Heights.

My husband and I are moving a few blocks from Eastern Parkway near the police station on Grand.

My husband thinks it's totally safe (has a lot of friends who have lived in the area for many years). However, as a petite woman who grew up around Great Neck, it looks a little sketchy to me.

I checked out the crime states and the 77th precinct doesn't look terrible compared to other areas.

We signed the lease so it's probably all relative...but pretty decent place and I'm just being paranoid?

  • For the money, I think you could have done better. I've been here for 3 years and the legitimately nice places are approaching Manhattan prices. There are some cool bars here and the feel of the neighborhood is nice, but you can get essentially the same apartment over by like Smith St, up in Greenpoint or in various non-Harlem places in Manhattan.

As far as whether it's safe... it's safe enough I guess... a lot of "newcomers" have been mugged or robbed, and some women have been physically harassed. Having been here, knowing who I know and seeing what I've seen I wouldn't recommend living here. The value is gone IMO.

Thankfully you're in a relatively good spot. Kind of far from the trains though. But w/e. Welcome to the neighborhood and good luck.
  • Sucks that Cool the Kid was the first poster since he is quite down on the neighborhood it seems.

I am a "petite woman" who grew up outside of the city and have lived here for a number of years. I lived alone for 2 and now live with my husband all in the area. I love it and have never had a problem with safety. (I have been verbally attacked in Manhattan, though). If you look terrified and wander around aimlessly, sure people may make trouble - but that's the same no matter where you live.

I think that often times people see something as "Scary" because it's not how they were raised -- I walked to work this morning and at SEVEN in the morning had 2 guys honk and cat-call. No, not the way I was raised socially, but I've had friends say they felt "unsafe" because of cat calling. You're not being hurt by someone telling you you're pretty or whatever -- just say thanks and keep walking. No harm, no foul.

    Enjoy your move and welcome!
  • do you know what best ensures safety in prospect heights?

    a decade of street closings

    and arena construction
  • Karl, there's more to the area than this arena construction. That area appears to have been a wasteland well before Ratner seized the land.

As to the original poster, there are only about a hundred posts exactly like yours. In your case, however, you have the added benefit of being next door to some crime stoppers.

who wants to be another dirty thief?

    Are you kidding me???

Hey there's always a rare deal to be had here and there, but as an ex-greenpoint and smith street resident, I completely disagree with this statement.

To the original poster, welcome to the neighborhood. As I've said before, the question is really whether it's safe enough *for you.* We've got a lot of things going for us. Be positive and engaged in your new home.

and enjoy the park in springtime; )
  • Thanks, guys. I was pretty sure I was just being paranoid and needlessly weird about the whole thing., but having never thought about even looking at precinct crime stats before, I had to ask for some local opinions.

Moving away from my neighborhood in Queens now because it's *boring*. I am definitely excited about the museum/zoo/gardens/parks/bars/restaurants.

    Appreciate the perspective!
  • Crime has no address, and the city is the city. People get mugged in Gramercy. Keep your wits about you and don't look like a mark and you'll be fine.

I've lived in Manhattan for years before moving out here and I like it better. You get a lot more for your money. People are friendlier, you actually get to know your neighbors by name, rather than the constant anonymous churn of the city. The city access via the express trains is amazing: my commute to work in Manhattan is substantially better than it was when I lived in Manhattan! You already know about the museum, parks, bars, restaurants, etc.
