Places We Miss...........

That deli that used to be where the Dunkin Donuts is at Flatbush/St Marks. Cops used to hang out there. They made good sandwiches. It was pretty fusty by the time we moved into the neighborhood 6 years ago.

Happy Days kids' clothing. Sure it was cheap. That was the point. I got onesies, little cotton dresses, leggings, all kinds of baby clothes there. It closed as my kids became too old for it, but I was sad for all the parents coming along behind us.

Ljnd... "Go Fishing". kids store.. second hand.. consignment shop on 5th Ave was amazing. My first grandson ( who will be 10 soon) was outfitted from that place. I would tell my "phobic against second hand clothes daughter"... I bought this in (fill in the name of department store or boutique) and got so excited about Alex wearing it I washed it immediately and put it right on him!
-
What about the second hand/consignment shop that used to be on Carroll Street was it? I can't remember exactly what street, but between 6th and 7th in the ground floor of a brownstone. Loved that place!

On 14th Street and 6th avenue there is now a Greek restaurant. Before that, there was a Tex Mex restaurant that only lasted a few months, if that long. And before that, maybe 2 years ago, there was a Dominican restaurant that made very solid Dominican food. Whole chickens, rice, beans, good fried fish, etc. It was very inexpensive and very good. I miss being able to buy a chicken, a huge plate of rice, beans, salad, and plantains for about $10-12 and eating it for two meals.

^ El Encuentro?
-
That sounds right. Oh, and they had great milk cake if it didn't sell out.
-
The wonderful little BBQ/southern food restaurant on Seventh Ave around Third Street. The owner/executive chef was a gorgeous retired model. I can't remember the name of the place but the food was FANTASTIC.
-
She was from Tennessee, and considered her cuisine to be "down home cooking". It wasn't at Third Street. It was in the space that is now Yamato, near First Street.
And yes, it was wonderful. -
Mule, most of all. It had the prettiest space with light from the front and back, an amiable young staff, and a nice mix of working and chatting atmosphere. It was up there with the great coffee shops of Minneapolis, where the rents are lower and the coffee business easier, and some of the coffee places legendary.

Smokey's was fun...the Mexican bakery on 5th Ave btwn 10th &11th St made killer sandwiches...had a few interesting times at the Blah Blah Lounge...
-
Oh, Blah Blah. I liked that place a lot.
-
Veets - thank you so much for this suggestion! I'll check it out this weekend!!!

Holy Cow
Thank you. That's what I thought, but it sounded wrong in my head (as do so many other things...LOL)
If I recall correctly, the owner moved out to Arizona and brought the elderly man who worked for him with him. -
Ditto on Lopez - I think they had the one in South Slope at the same time, actually.
Also Beso. We accidentally went there on the day they opened--we intended to go to the previous restaurant (bringing guests from out-of-town). We became regulars and they treated us so well.
Holy Cow records. I found amazing stuff there.
Being able to buy beer at Slope Natural at 5th/St. Mark's.
Perri (at 4th/St. Mark's).
The bodega at Bergen/5th Ave that was in The Squid & The Whale. It was sketchy but the owner was really nice.
Second Helpings. We ordered from there right after they opened and the owner/chef had to deliver it. Great vegetarian options.
Maha! I miss her so much. -

But it took them 10 minutes to prepare a non-toasted bagel with butter. I wanted it to succeed, but it was soooo casual.
I heard that Cherry Tree took over the space, but it annoys me that it's still empty. I was so excited that that block was finally opening up a bit. -

Charcuterie, right? They had all those photos on the wall and in the window? -

Cherry Tree did, but that was the same year that they (CT) were DOH problems and noise complaints and Mule renovations/expansion got put on the back burner. Soon after that the owner got married, and opened Rattle and Hum in the city and that's been his main distraction. -
Did anyone mention Sweet Mama's? I miss their banana pudding.
Also there used to be a Caribbean hole in the wall that served curry goat on 5th ave, but that was 10 years ago. -
Yes, although not by name. Neither Yosimite Samantha nor I could remember the name, but we both liked the restaurant.
-
Minsky's on the corner of 3rd & 7th was a great place.

Is this in response to my post? Are you referring to Sweet Mama's or the goat place? -
Yes. Sweet Mama's.

Yeah, true. I guess the casualness appealed to me, but only because I wasn't treating it as a take-away place. If it was too slow for take-away, that might've cut into profit enough to lead to the misguided efforts to make dough by kicking everyone out at 5 PM, putting candles on the table, and selling (okay, not selling) $20 salmon.
Thanks, Mamacita, for the explanation. I guess I'm not holding my breath that an expanded Cherry Tree space is going to appeal to me.
Howdy, Stranger!
