There are two chinese massage places near my house- one on 9th st between 4-5th above a nail place and one on 7th st right near 5th ave in another upstairs location. Has anyone heard anything about/been to these? Im always tentatitve of these kinds of places even though I'm 99.99% sure they're legit...it just seems odd that I've never seen a single soul going into either of them...

thoughts? I need a cheap massage!

  • My husband and some of our friends have been to the place on 9th st between between 4th and 5th ave.. and were pleased. I can't tell you who is the best practitioner though.
  • I just got back from my place. Can only speak for them (7th/16th). Looks totally sketchy from the outside, but fabulous.
  • flexi,
what do you recommend from the place on 7th'16th its on the corner from my block. what can i get for like $20
  • I know your love for that place, Flexi-I hope the ones close to my house are as good! Shit, one of them is on my street...that would be convenient. And im starting to think that I need to invest in massage as a form of basic maintenance (along with ugly orthopedic shoes.) Le sigh. My bod hurts
  • it's roughly $1/minute. I usually get an hour for $50. If you only want to spend $20 or so, have them concentrate on whatever hurts you most.
  • I've always wanted to try one of these. do you keep your street clothes on? or do you undress and stay under a sheet?
  • You undress. Totally. It's not for the bashful.

Realistically.. from someone who has undressed a lot... for massage!

There is no covered in street clothes way to do this.
Honestly.. The first step for a massage person to evaluate would be based on alignment.. you standing NAKED (oh yes) and rotating to give back front and side views of the way you stand.

So Flexi is so right.. if naked is not your thing.. this modality is not for you.
  • ^ this place doesn't make you stand up.........but I figure they have probably seen WAY worse than me...and even if they haven't, I don't care :-)
  • I love your attitude.. Flexi!
  • My only question is: Do they deliver?
  • I am sorry but...feel quite leery about using these places. They pop up out of no where, like the one on Vandie between Prospect Place and Park Place. There is also one on Flatbush right below Seventh Ave.
I feel that although they might provide a decent massage (and price) they are probably using illegal persons or are treating the workers illegally in some manner. I also feel that they may be giving legitimate messages to some folks but not to all. :? Lastly, are they well trained, licensed and/are there hidden cameras? Sorry folks but have been around the block a few times. Enjoy if this is your thing. Lastly, check the place out for its sanitation practices.

it depends on how far they have to go.

This place has been here for many years. The walls are thin enough (there are separate rooms, but the dividers don't go all the way to the ceilings), so you can hear your neighbors. I'm quite certain that if there were sketchy things going on, I'd be able to hear them.

Just peek in and get a gander at the staff - no offense meant - but they're obviously not there to get yours or anyone's rocks off. Think of the Asian equivalent of the burly no-nonsense masseurs you'd find in old-school Eastern European and Russian spas.

Staff at fancy Manhattan spas, like Bliss or the Peninsula are probably hired based somewhat on their "attractiveness" and one could fantasize that their masseuse may be induced for some "extra attention" - but not at these joints.

Seriously, these places are as sexy as a shoe repair joint. But awesome.

Staff at fancy Manhattan spas - and any other reputable and legal establishment - are also hired based on having a license and insurance, which is something that most of the practitioners at these establishments lack.
  • Exactly, and I have traveled throughout Asia and have experience with the massage "types" in different cities and locations.
It is the insurance and license info that is also an issue.
Our neighborhoods have so many practitioners at all levels who are legit and the prices in Brooklyn are much better when working with these individuals.
  • a friend of mine had a massage there and said an hour later he felt like having another one.
  • while naked and rotating is required, did they also request, you to jump up and down, bend over or assume a contorted position.

If so, you might be, being Punk'd by Run Run Kutcher or may wind up on China's Funniest Videos.
  • There is also one on 4th St between 7th & 8th ave (closer to 7th) that is really good. It's also about $1/minute.

For the record, they ask that you keep your underwear on... although then they pull it most of the way down, so not really sure what the logic to that is.
  • ^The one on 7th said "everything off", but I tried keeping underwear on the first time. Like you, they moved them around so much it was useless, so next time I took them all the way off. Are you a guy? I'm wondering if they only tell the guys to keep them on
  • there's a reason for that, do you think they want to feel inadequate.
