Where do people shop locally for kids clothes or for gifts for kids' birthdays etc.

I think the clothes out here are very expensive. Many of my friends go to Target but since they were such huge donors to the last Republican campaign, I just can't bring myself to shop there. Century 21 in Bay Ridge has good kids clothes, and there is a Children's Place out there also. But for GIFT clothes any of the places on 7th Avenue are fine--and they wrap them. Everyone goes to Little Things on 7th Avenue for toys but I usually order stuff because the selection is more interesting and the prices are better. But again, for a quick gift, they have nice stuff. Bumblez on 5th and Lu Lus have toys too.

Romp ("for modern kids"), on 5th Ave near St. John's, has nice gifts. Agree with Kensmom that the 7th Ave clothing stores, while often very good, are expensive for things that will be quickly worn out / outgrown. I do a lot of Old Navy, but i dunno if you count that as local.

I really like the new toy store on 7th Avenue between 14th & 15th (?). It's called Toy Space and is owned by a super friendly, accessible local woman and while it's much smaller than Little Things, they have some really interesting items and I'd much rather give them my business.

As for clothes, I agree with the others: no reasonably priced choices in the neighborhood. I go to Target, Old Navy, Century 21, and the Gap.

The Atlantic Center is a good place to get affordable children's clothes. They have the Children's Place; a pretty big Old Navy kids' section; and Daffy's, which sometimes has nice stuff if you're willing to pick through the tackiness.

Otherwise, yeah, there's Firefly (an "off-price children's clothing boutique" that sells fancy European-designer clothes) and Peekaboo Kids (expensive, though they have Zutano clothes for the going prices) on 7th Avenue. But both seem to specialize in Fancy Complete Outfits. And Lolli, on 7th near 1st Street, has clothes too, also kind of fancy, but not approaching the haute couture sold at Baby Bird.

Firefly is OFF PRICE?!! Ha! THat place is a rip off--paying $45. instead of $90.00 is no bargain for kids clothes. Lolli and Peekaboo have lots of stuff for older kids--i prefer Lollis service over Peekaboo--so pushy in there! I can't breathe! And my favorite shop for baby (and mom) stuff-Boing Boing on 6th Ave is always reasonably priced!! And if it's for your own kids--the best resource? Stoop Sales!!

For the most part, I don't buy the stuff in the neighborhood - it's too nice and too expensive. Considering what generally happens to children's clothing and how quickly they outgrow it, cheaper is better for me - Old Navy works fine.

I'm curious as to why citizen jane prefers to give her business to Toy Space.

Little Things has been in the neighborhood forever, it is totally local, and the owner is local and is the friendliest person in the entire Slope.

I recently told him that he should set up a booth on 7th Avenue so that he can sit down while he schmoozes with people, which he does quite a lot. I like him enormously.

I agree that Little Things is amazing and the owners are true Slopers and interested in providing great, individualized service. The merchandise is extremely well chosen and often unique.

it was, because a spammer had bumped it. then the mods deleted the spam, which is why it now looks like you bumped it.
