  • Since I pretty much have no life Im free every weekend
  • Me too. Let me know when I can take over the backyard.
  • YAY CLAMBAKE!!!
  • I'm free either this weekend or starting in August. :(

I could do it this Saturday (and don't tell me you're putting off the clambake for Shabbos)...
  • alafairnadia wrote: ack. I don't like HP Sauce at all. I tried so hard. :(:(
I'll add it the list of things you don't like. With Commonwealth. Let's see if anyone starts attacking you for slandering "HP's" now.

I'll probably stock up on Daddies while I'm over there in October. Is that more to your liking? Maybe we'll do a brown sauce blind taste test.
  • if you bring some Wine Gums, I may change my stance on PG tips
  • Im no good at setting up but Im good at following through :) I just realized that this weekend is the only Saturday I am not available (Bday weekend and hubby and son are taking me out). So maybe the first Sat in Aug. because we have to make sure Alafair can come ;)
  • what's a wine gum?
  • I think I'm going to London either at the end of Sept or beginning of Oct. before I do, I'll be sure to post and take orders. I already have to take a very specific brand of Tom's of Maine toothpaste over that isn't available and a few other things. I feel like I just swap things people covet from island to island.

lol. HP sauce, to me, is like tobasco without the spicy part. yes, I'm that person at Tom's squirting hot sauce on scrambled eggs, grits, a bacon sandwich, whatever. apparently that's what you're supposed to do with HP sauce and I tried, really. but then I just got some leftover curry out of the fridge and put that on my eggs, instead. :)

oh man, I'm getting hungry thinking about curry in London. le sigh.
  • I do the product exchange, too.

To Spain: cinnamon flavored toothpaste and tic-tacs, listerine pocket strips

From London, France or Spain: Avene facial products (there's a limited line here), Garnier face products/sunscreen (same peeps that make haircare - their moisturizers and sunscreen are great ....and cheap)

I won't even mention the unmentionables that get traded
  • i have similar issue with certain canadian products, and a list of friends who travel there frequently... let me know if you're going, because my tea-bag stash is waning
  • oh, and wine gums are like gummy bears, but shaped like worms. No wine in them (unfortunately)
  • alafairnadia wrote: oh man, I'm getting hungry thinking about curry in London. le sigh.
If you want real good curry in Britsville head north to Bradford.

Yikes look what you started - this is bad if I'm jonesing for curry at 10 o'clock in the morning. :)

But they do have the names of wines on them (I guess that's the connection) - purple blobs sporting words like "Claret" and the like.

yeah. I had some totally boring vindaloo last night at work after my curry jones.
I had some awesome Bangladeshi food from a place in Ealing (!!) when I was in London last year. it was so absurdly hot that the next day I tried to eat some leftovers and had to add more veggies because the hotness factor had increased due to all of the veggies absorbing chili. so good.
  • alafairnadia wrote: I've said it a million times (or so) - the co-op would be better served by charging a yearly or monthly fee to folks who wanted to shop there but didn't have the time to work there. I don't care enough to even contact them about this - I'm not hippy-snippy enough to feel guilt about buying food at fairway, freshdirect or local supermarkets. but every once in awhile I look at their website and wonder if I would have ever joined if they had an option like that in their membership. I'm reasonably certain a lot more folks in PS would stick with their memberships if they didn't have to invest almost 3 hours every 4 weeks.
Heck, I still miss Boston and their food co-ops. There, you can pay a membership fee and/or volunteer (can't remember the specific details), or simply shop as a customer. Every item has 2 prices - one for members and one for nonmembers. I really liked that - an incentive to join, but not being barred from even browsing (grrrrr!) if I'm not a member.

Meanwhile, I happened to be in the UWS on Tuesday night and shopped at the Fairway there. Good stuff. Sad to say, it's less of a hassle for me to shop at that Fairway (right on the 2) rather than the one in my own damn borough (2 buses and a few brisk walks)! :)
  • Sorry to continue the tangent, but have you guys tried Brick Lane Curry House on 6th St. It's meant to be London-style Indian food. I haven't been in over a year, but I thought it was tasty then (not as good as in London, obviously, but damned good).

  • Subject: Co-Op & power outage

From Gawker and the NY Sun:

Tragedy in Park Slope after a power outage forced the Park Slope Food Coop to close for 17 hours.

"At about 8:30 p.m. on Monday, the lights in the store started flickering. Then they went out, the result of a fire below street level caused by the excessive heat conditions, Consolidated Edison officials said. More than 100 people were in the store at the time, but no one could leave with their groceries because the cash registers and the phones were not working, either. "Abandoned shopping carts with food were all over the store," another coordinator at the store, Jessica Robinson, said."

Our hearts go out to everyone involved. We can't imagine how much worse rotting food smells when it's mixed in with the scent of smug self-regard.

The queens of snark have that one right!

 Hope YOU didn't get any of the ice cream being distributed free . . .

of course the perishables were distributed to City Harvest and the CHIPS soup kitchen, in addition to the produce and ice cream fest on the street.
  • Well, dw438, you got the response you wanted!

I'm sure that's not the end of it though...

Nope ... all the ice cream went to fat Louie G and his vanilla Cadillac Escalade at the end of the block!
