front door/building lock vandalism — Brooklynian

front door/building lock vandalism

hey all,

twice now we've had someone come jam a piece of metal into our front door lock. we're not quite sure if they're trying to break in or just trying to piss us off and not let anyone get into the building.

regardless, we're in south slope near the circle... has this happened to anyone else in the nabe?

Comments

  • Sounds more like vandalism then an attempted break in. It is likely someone who is familiar with the building and has legitimate business there. A bit of a risk for a stranger to approach, especially twice, not knowing if any cameras are trained on the door. Possibly an under appreciated super? Any recent evictions, legal or through a partner break up? Any disrespect shown to teen-aged children of the landlord?
  • modsquad, none of the above...

it's an eight-unit building, i doubt that anyone would think there were cameras. i think it sounds like vandalism as well, but freaky that it has happened twice.
  • Yuck. Definitely sounds like someone tried, or is trying, to get into your building. Are they jaming the metal to keep the lock from latching (i.e. doing it when the door is open) or trying to pop the lock when the door is latched?

My apartment doorjamb has a metal flange (if this is even the right word) where the lockset is. While I think an intrepid burglar could get through that in seconds, maybe it provides a degree of protection. You might consider that as a quick fix.
  • BK, it would seem they are doing neither.

they are jamming a thin piece of middle directly into the keyhole so nobody can get their keys in. i don't even know how that piece of metal would open the door
  • Argh! That really bites! At my old place (center-ish slope) some yutz put glue into our front door keyhole. Needless to say the door had to stay open until they were able to replace the whole thing. Sounds like either a personal issue or a prank/vandalism. Regardless, it's sucky.
  • Perhaps someone is drumming up business for the local locksmith?
Sounds like you need a professional to "fix" the problem.
I've heard this is done to car tires in various areas from time
to time. Just a thought. Has it happened to other buildings that
    you know of?
  • dunno, reggie, that's why i posted.

    anyone?
  • Have you had someone move out of the building in the last month or so? Sounds like it might be a grudge/someone trying to ruin things for people left in the building, more than someone trying to break in.
  • PM, nope. coop. happy owners, long term tenants. nothing like that.
  • Everyone should chip in for a security camera.
  • we've thought about that, but does that actually deter anyone? and if we get footage of someone, are the cops really going to care about this when there are actually serious crimes going on?

    No and no.

Also...someone was trying to break in... case closed. They tried, they failed.
  • Not sure about the deterence part, but I can say from experience that the cops will ask for copies of tapes/footage if they think your camera has captured a crime. Simple vandalism may not rise to a level of interest, but should one of your neighbors get robbed, or serious property damage occur, they will be all over it.
  • does anyone have any idea what something like this would cost?

I have to agree with this. It probably wasn't a professional, maybe someone trying to see what would happen if....

Also, another thought: does someone in the building have a crazy ex?
  • hah. i think i'm in the only one with an ex, and while a tad eccentric he's not crazy (don't you agree, bigguy?)

    :-)
  • When we lived in Chicago there was a local goofball we called Kicker Gluer. He would walk down the street, randomly kicking the air. And he would stop here and there to glue shit in people's lock. usually just gum.

I hope for your sake you have a similar weirdo, not a criminal/wannabe!

    Yes and yes.

    "twice now"

and when does someone have to be a professional to break in and rob and or harm people?
